The Libre is great for reading plain text documents in small fonts. Text is not perfectly smooth at the smallest font, but still very readable (comparable to a Kindle), and the screen has excellent reading characteristics. If you need to display large fonts or graphical PDF files, the screen is too small and the formatting is not sophisticated enough. Hyperlinks are supported, but the user interface makes them difficult to use. The Libre loads everything slowly, though it is quicker to load files which have recently been viewed. Once a file is loaded, page turns are very quick )though if you want to flip pages up and down to refer to something you read earlier, it is a bit slow for that purpose).
# Listening #
The MP3 player is probably fine for music, but is not ideal for spoken word files like audio books and sermons. The main problem is that it does not have audio bookmarks, though it does remember the pause position for the last played track. Also, there are too many button responses, so accidentally bumping any button will most likely skip to another track in the playlist, which voids the playback position in your audio book. There is a fast-forward feature, but it has a fixed rate and is not very fast, so scanning to the middle of a 2 hour file takes a couple minutes.
# Hardware #
The buttons and general user interface mechanics are very comfortable to use. It doesn't look or feel cheap or flimsy in any way, except perhaps for the floppy cover on the power/USB/SD ports. The file interface is a bit clumsy: it simply shows up on your computer like a flash drive, and you need to be aware that books must be copied into the books folder, while mp3 files must go in the audio folder. Upgrading the firmware is quite clumsy: for example if you copy the firmware into a subfolder, or copy the firmware .bin file without its containing folder, then the upgrade will fail and it will not tell you what is wrong. The USB interface is so slow that it is nearly unusable; the only practical way to move files on and off the reader is to get an SD card and use a separate card reader device. Be aware that the Libre is sold in two packagings: one including an SD card and one without, and the Libre is basically unusable without an SD card; it only offers 100MB internal memory, and you cannot upgrade the firmware without an SD card.
# Company #
Aluratek customer service is very responsive, though they do not always have the most current knowledge about all the different models. This is perhaps because the firmware is updated frequently, which is itself a big advantage. The firmware delivered on this model has a large number of obvious problems, but the latest version (0.20) is quite complete and reliable.

I've had mine for a year and couldn't be happier. It is so much lighter than my daughter's Nook. It fits easily into my purse. But, by far the best part is that, since it isn't WiFi or 3G, once you download a library book you can keep it forever (or until you plug into your Adobe Digital Editions on your computer!) I originally bought this for travel but find I use it all the time now. It's handy for reviewing your pictures while on vacation since you can insert your camera SD card in the slot. Of course, they're in black and white. Listening to music is a bonus. Great entertainment on the airplane. I like reading on this better than on a backlit device.

Basic eReader that does what it is suposed to. Screen is crisp and clear, not as good as eink but very readable. I read on a vanpool every morning and afternoon, after a week the battery is still at 70%. The processor is a little slow but that does not affect reading, the pages turn just fine. What it means is that sometimes you have to have a little patience. I put 4 Gb of music on an SD card and it took 5 minutes to organize/index but once done it was just fine. If you just want to read and listen to background music this reader would be hard to beat at [$], even better with the $20 rebate. Instructions are lacking but found online help with a few searches.

I own a larger (heavier!) tablet which does internet, apps, etc in color and I like it a lot MOST of the time. However, on a recent vacation cruise, I discovered I can't read it in full sun. Purchased this small simple reader with its e-ink and am very happy with it for reading outside at the beach or pool, which, living in Florida, I do a lot. The happy "extra" is that I can also listen to music either alone or while reading. Also, the small size fits nicely in a purse or pocket to go anywhere.

I got it on sale. I wouldn't consider it a good deal at MSRP.
The only difference between this model (AEBK01FS) and the AEBK01F is 2GB SD card.
It uses monochrome LCD, not the common e-ink screen on B&W kindle, nook, etc. They are very different underlying technology. The underlying Aluratek epaper screen is the same technology and color of old digital wristwatches, the "white" is the color of polarized sunglass or 3D glasses (the kind when you rotate to right angles turns black) -- olive greenish gray hue. Somewhat harder to read than e-ink under indoor light. It works best under the bright light, where the green shad brightens to white.
It can sometimes be slow after loading new books, or opening larger books.
It is much thicker than current kindles, nooks. Perhaps twice as thick. It is not touch capable. Looks clunky dated, like last year's clothing.
Once I get my rebate, I will be satisfied with the purchase, but not ecstatic.

The ebook reader in itself is great, the 100 books it is preloaded with are all free on line, but it gives a person a great start when they receive the eBook Reader. Its easy to use and comes with everything you need to get started, and is easy to load new books intoThe only draw back that I see is there is no back light feature, which does limit when and where you can use the reader. I might have considered a different one if I had read up and found out that there was no backlight. But I am not dissapointed with my purchase. Its super nice and great for the moneyIf you purchase from B&H you will be very very happy[...]. I am a first time buyer, but will look to them for my future purcahses.
