Hello there,
Nowadays we have seen most of the companies producing their new product or upgraded version. This time portable hard drive was in my to do list. Before buying My Passport Essential SE 1TB, I had few difficulty to be familiar about right product in a market with a great users feedback. After some deep research and use of this device, I came up with these features that Western Digital has provided.
If we take a closer look among portable hard drive, My Passport Essential SE 1TB USB 3.0 Portable hard drive from western digital
Looks Matters--Product Weight. 7.2 oz. Product Depth. 4.3"
Simple as plug n' play. The software provided by
Western Digital is very easy to install.
USB 3.0 as an interface is about 10 times faster than USB 2.0 (5 Gbps compared to 480 Mbps respectively).
USB 3.0 storage device is backward-compatible USB 2.0
USB 3.0 has a full-duplex communication compatibility that allows users to send data to and from the peripheral at the same time. In comparison, USB 2.0 just have a half-duplex communication.
USB 3.0 is supported by both Windows and for Mac users. Just quick FYI, This device can be used on Linux systems.
My Passport Essential SE 1TB Portable USB 3.0 runs in very little power when its status is idle and draws back power very efficiently when the device is is operating mode whereas USB 2.0 device uses a very constant power that reduces the power portable devices like laptops as well as decreases the battery life.
Since My Passport Essential SE 1TB Portable Hard Drive by Western Digital uses a very less power while the device is in idle mode, it avoids overheating of the unit itself.
Another great fact is when the device is in use mode, it runs quiet.
Product-wise, Western Digital values 7 stars. In spite of its great features, I even tried to know about customer service after and before purchase. I was supported by highly motivated and knowledgeable staffs. Informed all its benefits and even after I purchase this device, they helped me to install the software that helps users to use their product.
Not only for gaming,high-end multimedia, it is user friendly from simple to the advanced users.
With all these positive attributes, I am confident to say this device dissevers more than simple 5 stars.
Regards,
NJ

I have gone through 2 of these drives for various reasons. The first time I dropped it (obviously my mistake) and all the data was lost (it was backed up). After that I bought another one and just the other day it decided to stop working. Unfortunately I got burned because not all my data was backed up. A HUGE mistake on my part. After I did a quick google seach to see if it was fixable, I came across TONS of people who had the same situation occur. I brought it to a computer shop but the guy said it's fried. SO the moral of the story, be very careful with backing up your data with this drive because it is very unreliable.

This is a nice, fast drive for the price, but the autobackup software is a resource and processor hog in Win Vista 64. Aside from significantly slowing down your computer, it will create a GB worth of temporary files on your HD every time you start up, and doesn't delete them. You need to do that manually after the next start up.
Try something line Acronis True Image instead of the WD bundled software.

Western Digital does it again. This drive is EXTREMELY quiet, runs VERY cool to the touch and works GREAT as a back-up device. Plus it's USB 3.0, so I don't have to worry about it being slow as it fills up.
I don't have anything negative to say about this device.

I just plug it in and ready to use in a second. What is so great about it is that my whole family use it. I bought two of them in different colors. There is just one thing that kind of bad,the color red is 10 dollars more.Don't know why but it's weird.

I have been using these WD external HD's for about 4 years now (320GB to 1TB), and this is the 5th 1TB i have purchased, have never had one fail - and i travel alot, so it doesnt just sit on a desk or in a draw.
So for me has been a great, reliable product.

I am using it to store my mini DV tapes and other Photos. A 60 minuite DV tape is about 12GB and I have quite a few. The drive is small and fast and you need the NTFS file system for large files greater the 4GB. I can take it with me and show others all the photos and videos. Cannot believe I would ever need 1TB drive

This portable Hard Drive works really fast and is smaller than the previous incarnations from WD. I did have a problem in getting it to work right with my HP 500Z Desktop, but once I uninstalled the included software, it worked like a charm!

I use this drive to store and play movies on both a Mac Mini and a Windows netbook. Works fine and holds a lot. I can watch movies on a laptop in my camper without 120v power, since the drive is powered by USB!

I use it to back up my photos. It comes with software to sync but I don't use it and just copy all my photos on to the drive. Also frees up space on my PC.
