New camera, new lens: this Pentax-D FA 645 55mm f/2.8 AL[IF] SDM AW Lens is the first model of the Pentax-D FA 645 lens series created for the Pentax 645D digital medium-format camera. With a focal length that's equivalent to a 43.5mm standard lens (in 35mm), it features optics optimized for digital photography to assure exceptional performance, and also provides an image circle covering the image area of existing 645-format film SLR cameras. It has dependable, dust-proof, weather-resistant construction for active outdoor photography.
This lens features a Supersonic Direct-drive Motor (SDM) autofocus drive and Quick-Shift for instant autofocus/manual focus switching, Aero Bright coating to help prevent flare and ghost images, and it's Pentax's first 645 system lens to incorporate a rounded diaphragm for improved bokeh (the aesthetic quality of the blur in the out-of-focus areas of an image).

Comments about Pentax-D FA 645 55mm F2.8 AL[IF] SDM AW Lens:
This is the standard for the Pentax 645 D. It is sharp, has good contrast, and responds quickly to the auto focus. I have not noticed the soft corners that some reviewers have mentioned. The lens hood has a panel that can be removed to access filters. This is a nice feature.

Comments about Pentax-D FA 645 55mm F2.8 AL[IF] SDM AW Lens:
If you want a ~40MP medium format camera, order the 645D right now, because it's the first medium format camera that does almost everything right. IMO the sensor is wonderful, especially for long exposures. And I really like shooting the 645D.
As a bonus, for a relative pittance, you can buy a complete set of used lenses for the 645D, no small consideration compared to the other brands. As well as used Pentax 6X7 lenses on it with an adapter.
For anyone serious about it, I'd recommend two bodies to cover the bases of reliability and minimizing the need to switch lenses. The whole shebang will still cost a lot less than the Leica S2 with one lens, and I think the 645D has a better sensor.
