Setting up the SmartStor DS4600 is quite easy. Install the hard disks into the supplied drive carrier rails, insert the disks into the enclosure and connect the SmartStor DS4600 to your Mac, PC or server. You don’t need to worry about device driver installations or other complex configurations.
One Touch Configuration
- Insert your hard drives in the DS4600, press and hold the One Touch Configuration button on the front of the DS4600 for 3 seconds to automatically create an array. Then format the array using Disk Utility under Mac OS X or Disk Management under Windows and you are finished with setup, ready to store data.
- Compatible with Time Machine
- Connect SmartStor DS4600 to your Mac for use with Apple’s Time machine to back up your critical system files, applications, data files, music, pictures, videos and more.
- Ultra Quiet and Green
- SmartStor DS4600 complies with the RoHS standard, which means the SmartStor DS4600 is eco-friendly always keeping the environment in mind. The Standby feature of the SmartStor DS4600 allows hard drives to spin-down reducing power consumption during periods of inactivity. Thanks to the new enclosure design, system noise generated by the fan is no longer a concern.

Only had for a week but working great - easy to setup. Love how the drives install and lots of outputs firewire 400 and 800, SATA, USB ...
so far running smoothly - just so you know you can not use this to run two drives independently seems you can't turn off the raid function so if don't want a raid don't buy this.

I really like this 'personal raid' from promise (who makes substantial pro gear too). It's extremely easy to set up and allows you a multitude of options, from no raid (take your chances), to raid10 (combo of mirrored and 5). I chose 5 because i need the space for movies, music, and other large capacity data. I'm seriously considering getting a second unit before the price goes up. Highly recommend you purchase an eSATA card for your computer to take advantage of the full speed.
3 complaints: It does not yet support 3 tb drives, it does not support SATA II (6 gb/sec) on either the internal drives or the eSATA interface), and you can not manage the device through the eSATA port - I had to hook up a firewire connection to my computer to do that.
All in all, a fantastic no-brainer unit.
