Built like a tank designed for serious data combat, the LaCie Rugged XL (2TB) combines form and function in a unique desktop hard drive. Designed by Neil Poulton, the Rugged XL features a protective alliance between aluminum and rubber. The resistant and recyclable aluminum case gives the Rugged XL an industrial feel, while the shock-resistant rubber sleeve adds a warming, orange contrast. In between hard drive and shell, the Rugged XL also features anti-shock rubber-bumpers. All this protection can safely weather a fall up to seven feet.
The function behind the durability starts with multiple interfaces. The Rugged XL is equipped with a high-speed USB 2.0 interface and a lightning-quick eSATA interface, promoting data transfer rates up to 3 Gbps. The USB 2.0 interface is bolstered by the USB boost driver, which increases transfer speed by 33%. With a storage capacity of 2TB, the Rugged XL has plenty of room for storage and is compatible with both Mac and PC.
The software suite makes setup for either operating system effortless. You can easily customize the formatting of the hard drive with your individual needs. The Backup Assistant is also included for PC or Mac users and facilitates easy, automatic backups of your data. Plus, it can quickly restore any lost content on your computer. All these features give the Rugged XL (2TB) a unique set of features and distinct style.

what a disappointment
I've just had the second drive fail to format on me, I'll be RMA'ing this fellow back tomorrow. I'm terribly disappointed, I've several of LaCie's portable drives and they work just fine.

Comments about LaCie Rugged XL (2TB):
-I use this product for media projects such as photography and films
-this machine is fast iv never had any problems with it or any LaCie product. It is durable i have traveled with it and it gets pretty banged up with no external or internal damage at all.
-its not wireless, a wireless hard drive of this size will be the next big thing.

Perfect for on-the-road photographers, 2 terabytes, durable and can survive accidents. I backup using duplicates and have never needed my backup. Fast transfer via e-sata connection, has standard usb 2.0 as well.

I use it to store my RAW files of the wedding shoots, and use it with both MAC and PC. I love it how easy it was to set up. I am also a fan of the protective rubber sleeve as "who does not knock things off the table sometimes"? You can't beat the 2TB size, either.

Simple to set up and worked immediately upon installation. It is much larger and heavier than the 500 GB model I have of the same type. The size surprised me.
