I bought this originally to get a little more experience with using colored gels. I've used CTO and ND gels for years, but wanted to branch into a little more dramatic effect. This has quickly proven to be an excellent kit for me and an invaluable addition to my grip kit (I shoot editorial portraits on location). For me, it's a useful creative tool to have at hand.
I use these with Speedotron and White Lightning lights and usually clip them to the front of small grid spots or standard reflectors. They are thick and durable and nicely saturated. I've had no troubles with heat affecting these gels, and they're in pretty good shape, even after being hauled all over the place and abused daily.
As for the color selection of this particular Variety Pack, I like it. I use the CTOs and NDs frequently and the small selection of colors are all useful from time to time. The diffusion sheets are less useful for the way I use gels, though they could be used to soften a shoot-through umbrella or tame a hot spot in a softbox.
Good set, I'd recommend it.

These gels are great. I just clip them on over my can lights. They give a nice clear light. The only problem is that fuzz and other things cling to the gels.

A must for any photographer, this variety pack give you a little of everything for a great price. I had to cut them down to fit my Omni's gel frame, but other than that they worked great. So impressed that I'm going to buy some of the other filter kits made by the same company.

I use this product to diffuse our lights for filming. What we do is we put the filter in front of the light and use the white balance on the camera to create a more realistic feel to our films. most recently we used them in the 48 hour film project in St. Louis, the weekend of June 6-8. They seemed to work out really good for our purposes, and we are just learning how to use light diffusion techniques.

I am using the filters for lights as big as an arri 1000, and they let me experiment on different kinds of diffuse white, to get a variety results. Very confortable size to use on small lights.

I wasn't sure which gels to get, and this pack from Bogen is a great way to get a little bit of everything. You could conceivably cut them in half and use them carefully on a second light, but the main value is being able to test the different types of gels without having to buy full sheets.

Comments about Manfrotto Variety Filter Pack 12 x 12" (30 x 30 cm):
I cut small strips of each filter that velcro to the front of my off-camera flash (strobist style).
This pack has a good variety of colors for a beginner (though the filters are far larger than most still photographers will ever need).
There are two slight problems with this pack:
First, "Heavy Frost" and "White Diffusion" are so similar that I can't tell them apart.
Second, the "Hampton Frost" filter seemed to absorb some of the color from the "Yellow" filter since they came next to each other in the pack. It adds a subtle color cast to the filter.

A good choice if you're limited to a budget for lighting effects. The assortment lends itself to a number of options for diffusion and coloring light.
