The Night Owl 8-channel H.264 DVR with 4 Night Vision Cameras, with H.264 technology, offers high-quality images while reducing the size of a digital video file considerably compared to Motion JPEG format and MPEG-4 Part 2 standard. Utilizing triplex technology, the DVR offers simultaneous recording, playback, and viewing of live feed thereby ensuring no loss of vital information.
Allowing remote access up to 8 cameras, the DVR lets you view images captured via Internet. Equipped with a 500GB hard disk drive, the DVR provides real-time video streams, playback of recorded streams, and back-up for the system in case of system failure. You can also view the images of the cameras on select 3G smartphones such as Windows mobile, Symbian, and iPhone.
You can view the images from 8 different cameras simultaneously on 8 different portions of the screen and enlarge them by clicking on any of them. With a 400TVL resolution and 11 infrared LEDs, the 4 cameras (expandable up to 8) offer high-quality images up to a distance of 30' even in low-light conditions. With the motion activation feature, the DVR records only useful data and save space on your hard disk. It prevents false alarms by blocking out areas with constant speed such as roads and trees.
On reaching its maximum storage capacity, the DVR gives you the option of over-write that replaces the oldest file with a recent file. Using user-friendly icon-based interface, you can access all the features of the DVR. With password protection, the DVR allows only authorized user access and prevents unethical tampering of images. A particular video from the database can be found using a video search option that can further filtered using time, date and event of the video.
The DVR is equipped with 2 BNC to RCA video outputs that can be connected to multiple TVs via 6' RCA cable for instant viewing. It can also be connected to any computer monitor and TV with VGA input. You can transfer the video to a USB flash drive or an external hard drive via the USB port.

This unit was a nice price, but the video was horrible. The colors are all washed out. There was basically no color in the daylight. Poor unit. Sent it back to the manufacturer [...]. :-( It still isn't right. They just sent me a re-manufacture one. When mine was bad right out of the box. If you add a few more bucks, I am sure you will get a better unit then the DVR-FS84500 the Cameras are poor too. Only good for around 10ft, if you want to make out who the person is. No wonder Night Owl doesn't post photos of actual clips of the video on there website. It would be a deterrent to buy one. I added better quality cameras to the unit, but the video is still poor. I normally don't post bad reviews, but this unit warrants it.

I use it for my home at all entry points window ,front door, back yard, side window.
The good thing about it is it records with motion so i dont have to use up my harddrive, and if someone trips the camera it sends me a video clip of what was caught on camera,What i dont like about it is setting it up with my smartphone i had to call tech support 3 times already to get help setting up my smartphone with the system,They are saying my ports are closeed on my router so hopefully i will get this fixed.

Comments about Night Owl 8-channel H.264 DVR with 4 Night Vision Cameras (500GB HDD):
I bought this product to provide video surveillance of our vacation home
It was advertised be able to monitored over the internet, send emails when in an alarm state and viewed on 3 G smart phones.
Well it took half a day to get access over the internet, the directions are poor the tech support is not there. You can't call and talk to someone, you have to send them an mail. I still can't get the alarm state to send me an email. Directions say check with your internet service provider. I have all that information, sent an email for help......waiting for a reply. And lastly I have Droid X 3g smart phone that's not even mentioned in the direction. That's another Email.
The color is not very good. The cameras wiring and connections was an easy install. Just wish the tech support was just as easy.
Now I have a system installed that isn't doing me a bit of good when I'm not there.
