If you want to shoot tethered, on ac power, or with a microphone, you need this. You can shoot timelapse for as long as your largest card will allow. I think it was definitely a necessity for my GoPro kit. Kind of expensive for what it is, but what are you gonna do?

when i'm not worried about water/ rain, i've used the skeleton housing on my hero2 and the sound quality is much better

Finally I can leave my Hero set up intact, as I do not have to mess with the door to get the camera out to take the SD card off the camera.

Not for water use ! I use it for filming bmx and I needed to be able to attach a mic to my gopro since they don't produce the best sound so it's pretty self explanatory. Gives you access to everything. Works awesome.

In my opinion, this is a must have for all of you GoPro users if having decent audio with your video is important. I know the audio quality on the GoPro isn't great to begin with, but the extra cut outs on the skeleton housing definitly helps. It's also a must have if you plan on running an external mic with the Hero2.

Con - Price is a little expensive considering what it is.

If you're using your GoPro in a non-wet, non-dusty place, you can make several convenient functions possible while shooting:
--Charge
--Monitor
--Use external mic
Plus you can change SD cards and download footage without opening the housing.
And the built-in mic will hear much better with the skeleton housing.

Bought this to make it easier to charge the camera when needed, to use with a lavalier mic, and it also allows for better onboard sound recording compared to the water proof case. No complaints!

Using the skeleton housing and the LCD bacpac, I can charge the Gopro while riding and never have to worry about the battery dying. The camera can be left 'on' and ready to record at the push of the shutter button. Nice!
Only con: Can't use in wet envirionments, but I don't record wet rides anyway. Boring!

As all the rest of the GoPro line this case is well made. It gives the security and protection of the fully enclosed case with the option to "plug in" I have both the HDMI cable, a patch cord for my airplane intercom as well as the base USB cable. I use it exclusively in my airplane to allow the patch cord connection to record conversations and air traffic control.

This case is the same great quality as the standard sealed housing. I bought it because it allows access to the microphone jack.

I always wondered why didn't GoPro released a housing that will allow you to always have the convenience of using a powered usb cable so you can run the camera for longer periods and the use of video out with ought needing to modify the original equipped housing.

Well apparently they have listened to customer concerns and have released the skeleton housing what you gain from it is better audio, better cooling, and the ability to use the cables and power the device for longer periods either via automobile dc to usb car charger or purchasing an eternal universal large capacity battery pack which you can find on here.

I see it as a must have item recently my wife & I went on a road trip using a 32gbsd card and the housing I was able to record over 6hrs at R3 720P 60 frames by having this housing & plugging it into the car usb charger. The audio is so much better.

GoPro is good value for what it is, this housing offers protection of the camera without sacrificing the sound capture aspect & allows external USB cord charging without removing the camera

Essential if you want to hook up any external wires (power cords) to your GoPro camera. I use the GoPro in my car to record drives, thus the need for external power via a USB adapter plug in the power outlet. And you have the added benefit of being able to record audio, voice commentary, better than the solid case.
