Comments about Velbon PHD-64Q 4-Way Magnesium Head:
I bought this to use with my 4x5 rail camera on those rare occassions I take it out in the field. My old head works fine, but weighs nearly 5 pounds. I've been looking for a strong, but lighter alternative. Although it is not as steady as I would normally like, it seems to fit the bill. It holds the camera in place even if it is tilted down with the bellows fully extended, unlike all the lighter ballheads I've tried. The claim that this head can take a 23 lb. load is overly optimistic, but it should be able handle a pro DSLR or medium format with ease. The quick release is easy to use and seems secure. The pan lock has a slight tendency to move even when it is locked down. I wish they made a quick release plate that had a 3/8" screw.
