The FM-4 from Fostex is a portable 4-channel audio mixer designed for EEP, broadcast, television, and film applications where performance and flexibility are of utmost importance. The mixer features 4 balanced XLR inputs that accommodate mic or line signals and offer 12T and 48V phantom power. Ultra-low noise preamps and custom transformers deliver high-quality audio, while switchable high shelving and mid sweep EQ provide customization.
There are several output options, including 2 main outputs, 2 sub outputs, a tape output, and 2 aux outputs with channel select. The main and sub outputs can also double as 4 channels of direct post-fader output. A dedicated monitor return input is also included for referencing VTR or camera audio.
The FM-4 offers an organic LED display that is highly visible and easy-to-read. It offers high-resolution metering with VU and Peak metering modes. It also shows battery level and currently selected operating mode. The mixer offers seamless pan control and a fader link function, and many of the controls are spring-loaded so they can be set and pushed back into the mixer so they don't get accidentally adjusted.
The FM-4 operates on a set of 8 AA batteries that slide in and out of the mixer in a magazine. You can also receive power from an external DC10-24V power source. The unit features a handy DC output, so you can share power with other equipment in your bag, such as a wireless receiver.
