After using Leicas for decades, it is difficult to understand why they did not put the grip there when they designed it. it is a small camera, and i now use it more then my M9. But unless you have "munchkin's " size hands, it is almost impossible to hold on to without the grip! Perhaps it would be alright in a women's hands, but not a grown man's. BUY THE GRIP BY ALL MEANS !

Grip makes handling this small camera much easier. However, Leica could design an alternative grip, that would extend a few inches out, making it possible to hold the camera by the grip, not by the camera, where dials and function buttons actually get in the way to some extent. Also, I would suggest a rougher grip surface, which would be better to grasp.

The hand grip is worthy of your consideration, especially if you have have larger hands. Being new to modern P&S cameras, I was surprised to discover that for all the technological marvel that packed within so small a case, it really quite small to handle. The hand grip makes the camera much more comfortable to hold and use.

Well worth the extra cost.
If you get the everready Leica case with the detachable front flap, you need the handgrip because the screw for the case fits into the hole in the handgrip. It will not fit into the hole on the camera.
