Ok. So you bought an $800 pocket camera. Then, you needed an extra battery and the hand grip. Then a Leica leather cover. Now the EVF 1 Viewfinder. Now you have about $1400 or so invested in this pocket camera. The real question is, "Is it worth it?" Short answer, "Yes!" The viewfinder works electronically just like an SLR in this sense: it is seeing what your lens is. It is worth every penny for 3 basic reasons:1. it has a diopter adjustment which lets us old timers who have perfect distance vision but can't see our hand in front of our face compensate for that2. It has a grid option which is very helpful in composition3. Most of all, it allows you to see what you are about to photograph even in full sunlight. For those of you who have the D-lux5, this will come as welcome news. I love it. I wish I had bought it sooner. It has doubled the utility of this camera.

This Electronic Viewfinder is the best new feature for the updated Leica D-LUX 5, a very useful item in bright sunlight, although a bit pricy, but I think well worth it...and it looks very cool.

This is an accessory for those schooled the old way and who prefer a viewfinder over an LCD. Among the plusses: diopter adjustment, ability to pivot the viewfinder on the vertical plane, ease of attachment, match to zoom status and display of menus. Downsides: cost, slightly grainy image.

The viewfinder was one of the few things I missed going from film to digital. I have more control in framing and taking pics. The EVF 1 is clear with all the menu items functions visible on demand and since purchasing, is always on my DLUX 5. I use for action shots, night shots, street scenes, kids playing etc.
Typical high quality Leica.

The EVF makes the D-Lux 5 a truly usable camera.
It overcomes the ONLY shortcoming of the basic camera--the difficulty of viewing in bright light, and it makes it a helluva lot easier to keep the camera stable. Diopter adjustment is great. The image in the viewfinder is acceptably sharp and, because it is electronic, it tracks the zoom perfectly.
It's costly but worth it!!!
