The Drobo S 5-Bay Hard Drive Array Enclosure by Data Robotics delivers an expandable, future-proof solution for creative professions and small businesses in need of high performance backup storage. Built on BeyondRAID technology with single or dual-drive redundancy, this 2nd generation Drobo S protects your data automatically, even in the event of multiple drive failures. Able to hold up to five hot-swappable drives, this system ensures you'll have a high-performance connection to virtually any system with available USB 3.0, FireWire 800 and eSATA connectivity. With its unique ability to mix and match drives of several different classifications, the Drobo S allows you to instantly expand your capacity simply by adding or replacing a drive. With self-healing and drive redundancy technologies, the Drobo S helps make sure your data is always safe and accessible.
Since Drobo is 'Data Aware', it tracks where data is on each disk, so it can differentiate between used and unused portions of disk. This expedites rebuild times and reduces your risk of losing data to an additional disk failure.
Virtualization is what enables BeyondRAID to effortlessly change the data arrangement on the drives, for example, changing data stored as a mirror into data stored as parity stripe, without interrupting the user access to data. Virtualization completely decouples the physical space available in the array from the space reported to the operating system. This is how BeyondRAID is able to eliminate the need to manually expand/contract the file system as more space becomes available or is removed.

Had initial difficulties installing Drobo S, but now it is working well. My first unit came with 5x2TB Hitachi Deskstar drives which installed easily into the Drobo box. I followed the boot up sequence detailed in the User Guide for eSATA. When I first booted the Drobo on my Dell Studio XPS 8000, with Windows 7, 64 bit, using the onboard eSATA connection, it began to initialize—all five drive lights turned green but the Drobo was not registering in my computer drive list—and shortly thereafter the whole unit went dead. The Drobo never was recognized by my computer (apparently not all eSATA configurations work with Drobo). And, the power transformer unit apparently was defective. I returned the whole unit to B&H and they replaced it. At the same time I purchased a SIIG USB 3 card for my computer so I could try that connection option. Upon returning home I reinstalled the hard drives in the new unit, installed the USB 3 card, updated its driver, and attached the Drobo using the USB 3 cable. The Drobo initialized, was recognized by computer, and the drives formatted easily using the Dashboard utility. However, subsequent shutdowns and boots of my computer caused problems with the Drobo which appear to be related to the Windows 7 backup utility which somehow 'marked' the Drobo and caused my system to hangup (found this solution in the Data Robotics website after a detailed search of their support literature). Followed their instructions to shut off the Windows backup utility, reformat the Drobo, and reboot the system which seems to have cured the problem. After all this the Drobo S appears to be working well, responds nicely to the Dashboard commands and runs quietly, quickly and coolly with the Hitachi drives. I've installed the Drobo Backup Utility to replace the Windows backup utility. And in the end, I'm pleased with the Drobo S and its capabilities and look forward to finally using it to protect my photos, financial and other data, although given my startup difficulties, I'm now a little less confident about the long-term reliability of this system to protect my data. Only time will tell!

I purchased a Drobo S to simplify my workflow and consolidate all of my data into one place. The Drobo S looks like a great product at first glance, but comes packed with lots of different problems, specifically:1) The Drobo S is very slow. The maximum throughput I was able to get when connected via eSATA is around 25-28 MB per second when using enterprise-class WD 2TB drives with 64 MB cache. That's as slow as my WD Studio II external unit with WD Green Drives.2) USB 3.0 won't work unless you have a "compatible" chipset on your motherboard or have a separate card that is approved by Drobo. After hours and hours speaking to Drobo's tech support, I was told that my motherboard is not compatible with it. I was only getting USB 2.0 speeds on it. Another thing you have to understand, is that while USB 3.0 is much faster than USB 2.0, the speed on the Drobo is limited by the way Drobo handles data reads/writes, so even if you get USB 3.0 to work, it will still be as slow as USB 2.0 in terms of performance.3) Drobo's tech support is horrible.4) Ventilation on Drobo S is very bad. I could barely touch my hard drives after several hours of use.I posted a detailed review, along with lots of data to backup the above claims on my blog at [@]If you are looking for a better and faster storage product, check out Netgear's ReadyNAS Pro or QNAP [...]

Comments about Drobo S 5-Bay Hard Drive Array Enclosure:
DON'T USE WINDOWS 7 IMAGE BACKUP WITH DROBO.I've been happy with my DroboS eSATA until I recently performed an Image backup using Windows 7. This essentially bricked the unit... plus, the computer freezes when connected to the DroboS... can't use the computer and can't use the DroboS. After 4 hours it finally unfroze enough so that I could see ONE of the DroboS drives....So I contacted Drobo tech support and was informed that they have a KB article, #163, dated Feb, 2012, titled: "My Windows 7 computer hangs or is slow to boot when connected to a Drobo storage device. What should I do?"... which explains that you SHOULD NOT USE WINDOWS 7 BACKUP with a Drobo unit. Given that Windows 7 Backup apparently creates some partitions that the DroboS can't deal with, and given that it will freeze your computer, and given that it makes your DroboS worthless, and given that the only "solution" is copy your "X" terabytes of data off your DroboS and store it somewhere else (no where might THAT be?) and reformat the DroboS (start from scratch...with almost 4 terabytes of data???)... This is a major company policy FAIL. Why didn't they send their customers a tech support bulletin or notice about this? They told me it's Microsoft's problem... well, NO IT'S NOT... it's now MY PROBLEM and, consequently, Drobo's problem. My whole business is down until I resolve this issue. It means that I will have to purchase a storage device that can hold the data currently on the Drobo (you can bet it WON'T be another Drobo product)...let's see, we sell a cardiac monitor that just happens to cause a patient to go into atrial fib if they have a pacemaker, but since it's the pacemaker's fault we won't bother to tell anyone... we'll just post an all-but-hidden message in our knowledgebase on our website... under the title: "Monitor not working correctly on some patients". So you post an article that someone will NEVER read unless they already have the problem, THEN go looking for an answer...good logic, Drobo... close the barn door AFTER the horses are out....Here's how a small business owner reads this situation: Good device but the company that makes it is not protecting their customers... conclusion: do business with someone else.

If you need a lot of storage space that you plan to fill very slowly, the Drobo S is great. If you need a lot of storage space for large files (ie: video), look elsewhere. At 80MB/s, the Drobo S can barely handle a single stream of 1080i Apple ProRes (LT) video, and file transfers take forever. In this age of constantly increasing speeds, the Drobo S went backwards!
Don't be fooled by the USB 3.0 and eSATA connections on the Drobo S as read/write performance peaks out at 80MB/s. What's the point of having the option of USB 3.0 or eSATA if the unit will only run at 80MB/s? I have mine loaded with 5 3TB SATA III drives set to single drive redundancy mode.

The Drobos are good, reliable and easy to setup and manage. They are not the fastest enclosures, but I will take reliability over speed within reason. I had a bad power supply on an older model, and Drobo support was very quick to answer the phone and get replacement parts out. If you count on your drives, then this is a good outfit.

Comments about Drobo S 5-Bay Hard Drive Array Enclosure:
Well it's a bit longer than a year but the journey has had more ups and downs than a cat 5 roller coaster so for a trouble free solution to data storage problems it cannot be called happy one, several times I've thought I've lost everything! Not good for the heart rate.
Yes, it's slow and everyday with new technology coming in it's getting slower. Even with modest 1 Tb drives, allow a week to "rebuild" a single changed drive! The demos of disk rebuilds in seconds probably use 160g drives! Upgrading 4 drives can take up to a month! Far easier to copy all the data off and start afresh with the new drives. But hang on, isn't that the reason you got the Drobo - because you don't have anywhere else to put the data? Hmmm.
The fancy packaging is all very nice but after I'd unpacked it I have not once looked at the packaging again, I'd much prefer to be able to reuse the drives I replace with higher capacity ones! No, you cant reuse a drive once Drobo has seen it in another computer. It's a one way street for any drive going into a drobo, the natural process of moving drives down the chain, especially if you have more than one computer, has been overlooked. Possibly while they were thinking about the fancy packaging?
There have been some strange decisions that Drobo have taken in the past regarding their customers experience that might be described as "strange" or "interesting". Some of these decisions were reversed after the outcry from the owners!
Would I buy another? No and if I knew then what I know now? No. Given the apparent desire to be at the top end of "Desirable" rather than technical excellence charts, with the profits to match, I don't think I'd buy anything else with a Drobo badge. That's a shame because for a brief moment in time it could have become a very, very good product.

Comments about Drobo S 5-Bay Hard Drive Array Enclosure:
I spent the first week with this new device trying to get it to fail. At first, I loaded it up with 5 drives (different manufacturers, different sizes, different drive speeds; 500GB, 500GB, 1TB, 1TB, 2TB). I loaded the included software and it recognized both a needed software update and a firmware update. I just followed the on screen "click next" and everything loaded up easy. I copied about 1.5 TB worth of data to it and began removing drives (to simulate a drive failure) and replacing them. The unit immediately recognizes a failed drive and once you replace it, it begins rebuilding it. For my test, it took about 5 hours to completely rebuild. I continued doing this (removing drives, and replacing them with higher capacity drives) for a full week until I had the unit filled with all 2TB drives, all 7200 RMP, but different manufacturers. So far, so good. The unit hasn't given me any issues. The speeds are around 50 MB/sec write and 70 MB/sec read. I would have expected much more from USB 3.0. To compare, I have a G-Tech G-speed raid-5 filled with 4x 5900 RPM drives connected through e-sata and it delivers 125/140 MB/sec write/read speeds. Perhaps a future firmware update might address this speed issue. Otherwise I would give this 5 stars.

Comments about Drobo S 5-Bay Hard Drive Array Enclosure:
Works as advertised, after continued upgrades of my external hard drives I found myself out of space once again. Rather than repeat the cycle again, I got myself a drobo S with 2 3TB drives, now when I need more space all I need to do is purchase another 3TB internal drive and put it in the next empty bay. The beauty of the drobo system is I will not need to move or copy any data. drobo treats all the drives as a single drive, and automatically mirrors them so if one drive should fail no loss of data will occur. Simply replace it and drobo rebuilds itself. Initial set-up was simple and easy and the system works as advertised.

This Enclosure is AWESOME! I have finally found a way to reduce the amount of physical space needed to house my memory. I am a photographer and I had upwards of 15 hard drives hooked up to my computer...each with 2 wires (power and usb). The beack of my desk was a rats nest, not to mention a fire hazard. Now I have 1 power cord and 1 usb cord. And this thing is quiet and fast. Greay purchase!

I'm using the Drobo to store a movie and music library. So far so good. It was relatively easy to install and everything seems to be working fine. In fact, my whole computer set up crashed, just recently and to my amazement nothing got screwed up. Overall, I think it's a great value and perfect for what I am doing.

Comments about Drobo S 5-Bay Hard Drive Array Enclosure:
This product seems well constructed and now does what I purchased it for, which is data storage and back up. I spent a substantial amount of time trying to get certain features of the Drobo Dashboard software to work, specifically, using the Drobo Copy feature to sync data from my computer with the external drives. The program would give me "incomplete" syncs, error messages in the log. I contacted Drobo and was advised that Drobo Copy was a "simple" program and informed that I would have to use some third party software to sync data. The suggestion was for some free ware so it did not cost me anything other than hours of wasted time and aggravation. I just wish they would either get rid of the Drobo Copy feature or have a label warning me not to waste time trying to sync data with it. The other functions of Drobo Dashboard seem to work as designed.
The hardware itself seems to be of the highest quality and am now satisfied with the purchase, but I am mystified as to why the software was so sub par. It kind of undermined my confidence, but things are running smoothly now. I would recommend the hardware with a warning about the included software.

Comments about Drobo S 5-Bay Hard Drive Array Enclosure:
My wife is a photographer and I'm a videographer. We had come to a point in our life where we had 4 external hard drives just so that we could store all of our data and back it up. At my work I have a raid array and for my wife's business and my freelance work I considered buying an enclosure and setting up a RAID array, but I remember doing that at work and I remembered how frustrating it was. So after some research I bought a DROBO enclosure and it's been amazing. The set up was simple and I've already had to buy more hard drives to expand our storage and that's been incredibly easy as well. It's just a great system that takes all the worry and hassle out of storage.
