Metz mecablitz 50 AF-1 TTL Shoe Mount Flash for Nikon DSLR
The Metz mecablitz 50 AF-1 TTL Shoe Mount Flash for Nikon DSLR is a Metz shoe mount flash designed to be compatible with all digital Nikon SLR cameras, both current and future models. To better facilitate compatibility with current and future cameras, this flash now features a built-in USB port that allows for future firmware updates via the internet. A high quality metal base allows quick and easy attachment to the camera.
The 50 AF-1 is designed to fully support a Nikon digital SLR camera's TTL system. Both i-TTL/D-TTL/3D flash mode and i-TTL remote mode (slave and servo mode) are possible. It can be operated as a TTL slave unit that can be controlled by the camera's own built-in commander mode or as a manufacturer's flash with master capabilities.
The flash also features an auto zoom head from 24-105mm that can be set to match the camera's sensor, a full bounce and swivel head (with a fully swiveling reflector system which also contains a flip-out reflector card and a diffuser), a built-in wide angle diffuser for 12mm coverage, and in addition, full manual control with 12 variable power output levels.

I have Nikon D90 and I wanted a good quality flash that supports i-TTL and Nikon's CLS to use it on-camera and as second light off-camera(I have Interfit Stellar X 300 Monolight I bought from B&H as well). I read a lot of reviews (mainly discussing 48 AF-1 and 58 AF-1 - there was not many for 50 AF-1) and was between buying SB-600 and Metz's 50 AF-1, as Nikon SB-700 is way over my budget. I do not regret and a bit for my choice. This really is a very capable unit.
It's been discussed a lot in forums how inconvenient the two-button system is. Actually all functions you may need when the flash is on-camera are easily accessible by using the Mode button and + and - buttons for adjusting (switching between manual, TTL and TTL-BL, adjusting the flash power etc.) The two-button combination is for functions that are usually used for off-camera flash(changing to wireless CLS or Slave mode), so no problem at all. The LCD screen is well lit and readable. As Cons I can point out that some symbols on the LCD are very small. Other than that Metz 50 AF-1 is a very good flash unit.
What I like compared to SB-600 is:
- the built in reflector card
- 105mm coverage
- the USB port for firmware update.
What I do not like (but it has nothing to do with the flash unit itself):
- does not come with off-camera stand and flash pouch and I had to spend additional money to buy AS-19 and SS-900 Soft Case which increase the overall price a bit.

I chose B&H for their reliable and good shipping & packaging. The Metz flash I purchased arrived well packaged and on time. Now, to the Metz 50 AF flash. The flash control buttons on the back stick down and take some time for them to return to a neutral position making it difficult to set the flash. I did not receive a warranty card in the box , this is not an IMPORT MODEL. I called B&H and they said to call a number that was long distance to NY. I left a message that I need the warranty card, no human contact there. That was four days ago and still no return call to me from them and still no warranty card. The flash is difficult to use with the buttons sticking in the down position. SHAME ON METZ. I hope these buttons loosen up with use.

I was using a Nikon sb24, but finally decided to get a TTL flash since i was starting to shoot weddings and had no time to play with a non-ttl flash!
THIS flash is GREAT!!!! it does work with CLS off-camera, and it is actually super easy to use (but read the manual first, as most people don't and then find it difficult to use!!)
i recommend it.....i am actually going to order a 2nd one for my back-up camera (and get rid of the sb24)

Good power, decent build quality, works with CLS off shoe, consistent exposures, moderate recycle time. The only thing they could improve on is the control interface as the Nikon's are a bit easier to use. Of course, this is only an issue when used off camera as when used on camera all needed controls are accessible through the camera's menu.

Bought this flash for my wife's Nikon D40x. Very functional flash for that camera: relatively light-weight, good power, good range of tilt and rotation of the flash head. Compatible with camera's through the lens metering. Great use as a remote flash activated by on-camera flash(manual setting)

The Metz is a nice flash. I own the sb700 and wanted a second flash. However, I did not want to spend $300+ for a flash.
The Metz operates seamlessly with my D7000 and D5000. Exposures are very similar to the SB700 and it is slightly more powerful than the sb700 but most people will not see the difference.
My personal opinion is that the Metz is a good flash and worth the money. But if you have the extra $120, buy the sb700. THe extra $120 gets you a nicer interface, faster recycling, better build quality, a master flash, a case, a diffuser, a flash stand and gels. The Sb700 also has finer adjustments in manual mode. The only dissadvantage of the SB700 is the slight power output.

I have not had a lot of opportunity to use but what use it has seen has produced very good results. Operation is very straight forward. The two additional difussor add additional utility to the unit as does the built in bounce difuser.
Looking forward to many years of good service. Would definitely purchase again. Price was great!

After having used a Nikon SB-600 for the last 4 or 5 years with a D-70s and a D-90, I can say that this flash does a better job for both on-camera and utilizing Nikon's CLS. The controls are very similar to the SB-600. The two- button push to enter some of the more exotic menu items is not all that difficult and like the SB-600. This flash does not have the audio tones that some will miss from using the SB-600. The flash is definitely more powerful and the quality of the light is first-rate. Recharging rate is as good if not better than the SB-600. A great overall flash. I liked it so well, that I bought a second unit.

I have been using a Nikon SB-600 for the last five years and this flash is very similar in function. The Metz utilizes a simultaneous two-button push to enter into different modes. I found this to be very similar to the SB-600.
The only difference that I have seen is the Metz 50 AF-1 lacks the audio signals that come with the SB-600. The Metz is more powerful on the upper end and the quality of the light is even better than the SB-600. Additionally, the Metz has a built in optical slave function which the SB-600 didn't have. The plastic housing seems to be a little thinner that the housing on the SB-600. For most of us who think that the Nikon SB-700 and SB-900 are overpriced, this is an excellent alternative. I liked the first one I received so well, that I ordered an additional one.

Works fine in i-TTL . The quality of the light is first class. Consistent .
The menu system is too small on the LCD, plus the combination od the keys to "select" is a hit&miss : very annoying and frustrating.
But what's important is the power, the fast recycling and the consistent output.

i read a review of all the stobist gear in a magazine and they told me that this beauty would easily outperform many of the much higher priced Nikon or Canon speedlights. i needed it as a second (and back-up) sb-900. it is awesome! controls are easy and intuitive. some people said the manual is a must read but i just turned it on, flicked mode to manual (by pressing "mode" of all things...) and off i went. great for off camera flash use. haven't tried it with the ttl on my camera but that's not what i wanted it for.

Professional use.
After using Nikon flash for many years, and putting up with their flimsy hot-shoe mount, I decided to make the change.
The Metz 50 AF-1 is extremely well made and performs the task perfectly. Rugged metal hot-shoe mount with simple 'screw down' lock is the only way to go. All i-TTL functions work as expected.
Can't fault this item at all.
