The VideoMic Pro from Rode packs the audio quality and features of the popular VideoMic into an ultra compact and lightweight design that's ideal for use with HDSLR cameras, camcorders, and audio recorders. The microphone has a broadcast-quality condenser capsule with a supercardioid pickup pattern to capture audio from the front, while minimizing pickup from the sides and rear. An integrated shockmount and foam windscreen minimize handling and wind noise to keep your recordings crystal clear.
On the rear of the mic, you'll find a 3-way level control that offers -10dB, 0dB, and +20dB modes. There is also a 2-step high pass filter with 0 and 80Hz settings, letting you minimize the impact of low frequency hum, camera motor noise, and similar distractions. The mic has a standard camera shoe and a 3/8" threaded mount for easy attachment to cameras and boom poles. The 3.5mm plug is compatible with a wide variety of different cameras and audio devices. The VideoMic Pro operates for up to 70 hours on a single 9V battery, allowing you to work in the field without constant replacements.

Give it to Rode to make an already amazing product that much more amazing. The Rode VideoMic Pro, the spiritual successor to the ever popular Rode VideoMic took all the things that made the original shotgun microphone of choice for so many videographers and musical artists great and made it better. Rode really took into consideration the complaints and suggestions of the people who used the original VideoMic and added these features into the new Pro version. Features like broadcast quality audio capture, adjustable dB input (-10, 0, +20) and the ability to cut out low frequency sounds with the high pass filter, all in a form factor significantly smaller than the original model. Even the shockmount has been updated and shrunk to make whatever rig you are putting it on that much tighter and lighter without sacrificing quality sound. Now there is a significant price jump to the Pro version (from $150 to $230) but if you sign up for the 10 year warranty (another plus) Rode will send you a free dead cat windscreen for free! Easily saving you around [$]! For the new size of the device and the features it has, its well worth the extra money.Overall no camera rig would be complete without it. Pair this up with a Zoom H1/H4n and you've got a pro audio solution comparable to most industry standard audio solutions. If you have a tight budget but looking for the best quality sound for money you can't go wrong with the Rode VideoMic Pro.

Yes, this is a great microphone once you figure it out, especially the trick in getting the battery cover off and snapping it back on. What's worse, is the battery cover isn't attached by a small strap to the body of the electronics compartment of the mic. It's only a matter of (short) time that I'm struggling with removing or replacing the battery cover that it will fall and I'll lose it. Once you lose the battery compartment cover, that's it. The battery won't stay in its place, no contact, no power, no mic. Dead duck. This is a deal-killer for me.No matter how good the mic is, if you're on a shoot and somehow you lose the battery cover, you have no mic, and for most of us, that means no sound, or really bad sound. If you're shooting mission critical assignments, like a wedding, and you rely on this mic, you're in a world of hurt if you drop the battery cover and can't find it, such as under a table in the reception, or similar situation. If that weren't enough, the little rubber bands holding the mic body to the mounting bracket are very loose, and come off almost regularly as you try to fiddle with the body to change the battery. It's really poor design, and Rode should have figured out this is not a sustainable design for reliable field use. I ended up glueing the rubber bands to the body so they didn't keep coming off. You put one side on, and other side comes off. Geez, what a pain.If you plan to use the mic where a mixer is involved, as do I, you'll need an extension cable or two, because the short cord from the mic is long enough to reach the camera only if it's mounted on the hot shoe directly above the camera. If you plan to use an "L" bracket, you'll need an extension cable to reach the camera input jack. The cord is NOT coiled, which would have been nice. It just hangs there. The switches on the back of the body give good control over mic functions, but they're really small, and tight to operate, so you'll jiggle the mic quite a bit when you engage the switches. Sometimes, you'll go all the way to the right when you're trying to get to the center position, so more fiddling is involved. These might seem petty, but when you're under pressure to get the right shot, the last thing you need is to wonder if the rubber bands are loose on the suspension, or having to change the battery in mid-shoot, then losing the battery cover on the floor, and looking around for it. Heaven help us if we lose the battery cover in a dark room or outside on grass, or other equally distasterous situation.[...] So far, there is no fix for this in the pipeline that I know of, and there's no provision for purchasing extra battery covers. I'll update this review if I find out anything to the contrary. In the mean time, just keep in mind that if you lose the battery cover, you're a dead duck. If you want to take that chance, I'll sell you mine at a discount!Hope this helps.

I was not satisfied with the nikon me-1 on my d800E, too much noise. This videomic was much better in all catagories.

I use the mic for interviews. It definitely achieves the goal of capturing only what the mic is pointing at. Still a bit tinny in sound

Bought a Panasonic video camera, and when we played back, we were very disappointed with the built in mic. I purchased the RODE mic, and our sound quality improved 1000%. A very worth while investment. The built in shock absorber is awesome.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:
Good mic for the price. Small and lightweight makes it very convenient. Good quality audio. I held back one star because I think the connecting wire should be a thicker gauge. I have not had any problems but it feel fragile. Also, as many others have commented, the battery door is a bit tricky to remove.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:
Picked up a hummingbird flight sound as it flew by. A great improvement over the Canon 5D MK III internal mic, directionally and gain (3 settings). Have not needed the +20db setting (yet).
On the Cons, the battery access cover (min issue) was not easy to remove per instructions as it had resistance against the foam mic cover. Thumb nail in the crack below instead of pushing up per instructions works better.

Great sound pickup! Hardly any hiss at all. Very sensitive even at normal setting - much greater at +20dB. Highly recommended for Nikon D800.

I had to return three different plug in mics because the quality of sound was so bad. Then I found this mic here for my Cannon and it works perfectly. Seriously. Perfect sound capture without having to wear a wireless mic. Very happy.

I put this on my backup d300s camera that I keep slung over my shoulder to shoot short clips at events.
It did a great job at a recent event capturing clear audio and to minimize camera focus and zoom noises.
Positives:
-great sound quality
-works well with 300s dslr
-light weight
-doesn't show in 24mm equivalent shot
drawbacks
-battery was tricky for my fat fingers to install
-this mic would do better on a primary camera where you can keep an eye on it at crowded events. It was attached to the slr hanging on my shoulder, so it was easy to bump the mic out of its sound isolation/rubber band cradle (it just takes a moment to reset it into position, however)

I use the mic on a 7D to shoot nature video. The +20 sensitivity is great for capturing songbirds. Great localization. A little sensitive to my breathing at the higher setting.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:
I received the Rode mic the day before I was to head out to the NHRA Drag Races, I read the instructions and took off for the track...forgot the battery! Day 2, I climbed to the top level of the grand stands and began to shoot some video with my 5D2, a 70-200 and the VideoMic Pro. The wind was strong and the mic was bouncing around the entire time, great test for the rubber isolators. I used the mic on the -10 setting as when these top fuel cars go past you feel the pressure from the engines! The sound quality is great, be it the cars or the tracks PA system. I was concerned some about the wind and my lack of a "dead cat", however since I am a novice in the video world and I have no idea what a DC does, yet I am very happy with this product!

I'm a one man band who shoots corporate videos and TVC's with this mic on my 7D, and it's fantastic in all situations (so far) and the ability to tinker with the DB is great but i recommend getting the deadcat with it for outdoors.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:
Produces poor audio and too much noise at any db setting on my Nikon D7000, even when adjusting the camera sensitivity to Low. Requires extensive tweaking and filtering in post to get reasonable audio. Rather disappointing, especially for a mic at this price point. Probably good enough for home movies but not production work.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:
I can't believe how much quality is packed into such a tiny shotgun mic. I've been without a good audio solution for shooting video on dSLRs for a while, so when I finally bought the VideoMic Pro, I couldn't wait to try it out. I love it! It's much smaller than the original VideoMic, and seems to be well-built.
And the audio quality is fantastic! You really can't ask for a better run-and-gun shotgun mic for use on dSLRs.

I use the product to pick up field audio when a lapel or haninging boom is not possible. I also use it as a backup audio sorce when I am using a lapel.
This mic has saved my behind more than once when the main audio source fails and even sometimes i end up using the audio from this mic over my main source of audio because it sounds so great.

Comments about Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun Microphone:
The muli-channel options are nice and come in handy. If you have a DSLR that you cannon control mic input levels you still pick up a lot of room noise, I haven't found a way around that yet. One flaw I found right off the bat is the battery cover isn't the easiest to work with. I had some trouble with it, it's not intuitive in the least, make sure you look at the instructions so you don't break it. Also the wind screen has adhesive that makes removing the wind screen very difficult, I ended up just leaving it on, I didn't want to risk ripping it. I would recommend this product to people, like me, who are just looking for amateur recording equipment for personal projects.
