The Toshiba 1TB Canvio USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive (Black with Silver Accents) offers a digital storage capacity of 1TB and blazing transfer speeds up to 5 Gbps. It's compact, bus-powered, and has an internal shock sensor and anti-slip rubberized side grip for added durability and protection. Since it's bus-powered, you can easily take it wherever your laptop goes. For security, Toshiba includes preloaded backup software and 256-bit hardware encryption. You can customize your backup preferences and schedule, set a password and the Canvio will even remind you when it's running out of backup space. If needed, the USB 3.0 interface is backward compatible with a USB 2.0 interface. It's ready to go right out of the box and is certified to work with Windows XP, Vista and 7.

I have used other portable hard drive brands, but this is my first Toshiba. It's two weeks since I bought it and its very great. Neat appearance, very small size and weight, and special grip design around the edges that decreases the risk of dropping the drive and ruining it.
It is also very fast with USB 3 option. Much faster than my older drives that are all USB 2.

First of all, I've had the 1TB Canvio USB 3.0 for less than a month, and have not been using it extensively. I bought it so I can do a Windows 7 Image backup of my laptop. So far, that target was achieved with no fuss. The backup was about 92GB and was completed under 15 minutes.
For all of you, myself included, who read all the bad reviews about the product breaking down, I suspect the culprit is actually the USB cable. The cable itself is very stiff, the connector at the Canvio end is extremely tight, and I suspect if you keep plugging and unplugging t, it will cause problems down the road. So I decided to leave the usb cable connected to the Canvio and store it with the cable attached. It is not a problem as the cable is quite short. For all of you who may be experiencing problems with the product, you should try to replace the USB cable. I don't think the Canvio itself will break down unless you knock it around. I like the fact that the product is very slim and compact. I was surprised at how small it is. At some point, I'll buy another cable that may not be as stiff and tight at the connection.

I would love to give Toshiba 5 stars. The speed, durability, everything is great except the weak 3.0 connector (It's probably why the 2.0 version sells for more money despite being slower).
I strongly suggest you get a second 3.0 cable and they're not easy to find. The cable included is short and not too flexible, pops out and is prone to being easily damaged. If not for that, this would be an excellent investment. I may even buy another as the price is so good.
