Giottos' VGR9254-S2C Aluminum Tripod/Monopod W/QR Ballhead boldly goes forth exploring a new frontier that any photographer will cheer--designing a solid professional tripod that folds down to a manageable size. This aluminum support will extend to 5.16' (1.57 m), but its minimum working height is little more than a foot--15.4" (39.11 cm), and it folds down to 15.6" (39.6 cm). Although it weighs just 3.3 lbs (1.49 kg), it can support up to 8.8 lbs (4 kg). The included quick-release ballhead has bubble levels and is Arca-compatible.
Plus, one leg of the tripod combined with the center column converts to a monopod that extends to 5.39' (1.6 m) and collapses to 28.8" (73.15 cm). The 5 tripod leg sections use a quick twist-lock design, and the tripod accepts optional accessory spiked feet for use on rough terrain.

This is exactly what I was looking for in a tripod. Reasonably light weight, compact, easy to use and very steady. An excellent tripod for the photo enthusiast.

Comments about Giottos VGR9255-S2C Aluminum Tripod/Monopod W/QR Ballhead:
I`ve used this tripod for about three weeks now and find it really useful. After browsing through different styles of tripods, I decided to go with a travel size.
I find it incredibly convenient how compact this tripod is while folded up, I`ve had little hastle taking it along for hikes and just about anywhere. The twist leg locks are very impressive, as it takes little effort to extend and retract the legs quickly and firmly. This tripod is loaded with features which have made it an indispensable tool. For starters, it`s built rigidly and feels very solid while supporting my EOS 60D with a 18-200 mm lens. The tension knob holds my camera perfectly while tilted or straight up in the landscape orientation. The quick release plate is fantastic, and includes added security with a locking mechanism incase the plate is accidentally loosened. The tripod also features the ability to convert into a full sized monopod, which again is yet another useful feature. Another reason why I chose this tripod is the ballhead`s featured panning tension knob. Most competitors didn`t offer this feature.
While this tripod is very rigid and packs many features, I happened to notice it doesn`t fare so well if set in the portrait orientation unless the camera is positioned perfectly level. Unless I over tightened the tension knob, the camera had some slight creeping downward due to the weight of my camera and lens. The tripod was described to have a maximum weight limit of over 8 lbs, yet I`m experiencing some slight difficulty and I know my set up isn`t that heavy.
Other than this issue, I find the tripod fantastic in all respects. If you have a camera of a similar weight to the Canon EOS 60D, perhaps consider the next model up to accomodate the extra weight.

Comments about Giottos VGR9255-S2C Aluminum Tripod/Monopod W/QR Ballhead:
When I started out in photography I purchased an inexpensive tripod from a local retailer. I didn't use it much because, well, it wasn't much fun to use. However, I did come to understand the key features I'd like in a tripod, which is why I purchased the Giottos VGR9255-S2C. It's well thought-out and well-made and, it doubles as a monopod, too. The key selling points for me were weight carrying--enough for my D300 + 700-200 lens, the quick-release ball head (I also purchased a Kirk bracket for the D300) so I could quickly switch from landscape to portrait while keeping the camera's center-of-gravity directly over the ballhead, light-weight and compact size for traveling on an airplane. It has a wonderful feel and comes with a sturdy carrying bag. It's everything I was hoping for.
