G-Technology's 3TB G-Drive Professional External Hard Drive is great for storage intensive applications, including audio and video editing, digital photography, MP3 libraries, and high-speed data backup. This external hard drive system features a high-speed 7200 rpm SATA II drive with a total of 3TB of storage. While you can connect the G-Drive to a computer via eSATA, FireWire-800, FireWire-400 (via included adapter cable), or USB 2.0, you can optimize its data transfer speed via the eSATA interface. If connected via the eSATA port, you can transfer data at a rate of over 100 MB/s.
The G-Drive is formatted for Mac's right out of the box, so you can quickly start transferring your files or even backup your computer's hard drive via Time Machine. In addition, you can quickly and easily set the G-Drive up for Windows use as well. Moreover, you can even format your G-Drive for use with both a Mac and Windows system. If you do, you will need a software utility like MacDrive (not included), which allows a Windows OS to mount Mac formatted drives.
If you ever decide 3TB of memory isn't enough memory, you can always connect more G-Drives to your desktop using the G-Tech 4-Port, PCIe x4 eSATA adapter (not included) or another company's adapter. You can also connect more than one drive to your laptop or desktop via FireWire daisy-chaining or through a USB 2.0 hub.
The hard drive is housed in a unique, all-aluminum external casing that also holds an integrated heat sink. The heat sink provides near silent operation and ensures proper cooling for long life and data reliability. Whether you're working with image, music, video, or data files, you'll have a durable high-speed storage solution sure to please in the G-Drive.

I don't care for the physical size of this drive. Also, the power switch doesn't have an 'AUTO' setting, so its either ON or OFF. I prefer LaCie's D2 Quadra drives because they're smaller and have an auto power feature, where your hard drive automatically powers on/off when you turn your computer on/off. (No reaching around to the back of the drive to find the power switch!) LaCie also makes a ton of accessories for their drive, like PCI cards, Expresscards, etc.
Other than the complaints above, this is an excellent drive. I do recommend these drives but my personal preference is for LaCie drives. If G-Tech made these drives smaller and added the auto power feature, I'd give it 4.5 stars. If they had the same accessories as LaCie, I'd give G-Tech 5 stars and would lean more towards their drives!

This hard drive has been great. We are a University communications department creating in house videos. We were looking for a hard drive that we could move around the offices and could edit off of directly. This G tech Hard drive fits the bill. Also, it worked right out of the box. I didn't have to do a thing except plug it in and turn it on. In addition, the hard drive is very quiet. So far, it's been great.

I use the drive to back up my Mac with Time Machine. I have partitioned the drive into 2 partitiions. One of the partitions is dedicated to Time Machine for backup and the other partition provides additional storage.
The drive is fast and quiet. The setup on a Mac was very easy.

This hard drive runs super fast and smooth. This is my second G-drive that I have bought and if they continue to deliver this quality I will definitely be buying more. The best drive for video editing.

I use this drive to hold my media, and image backups mostly. It is my main music and movie drive, and backup image drive.
I love the fact that it is fast, quiet, and only gets a little warm. It has been performing quite well since I got it, and with no complaints.
One down side is that the LED on it is VERY bright. Not something you want to be staring/blinking into your eyes after you've just woken up in the middle of the night. It's a pretty nit-picky con though.

Unlike the previous generation G-Drive Q, this has a smaller external power supply with a different connection, but it gets the job done. Again, unlike the G-Drive Q, this drive does not have the firewire 400 port. They do however accommodate firewire 400 with a special firewire cable that has the 400 on one end and the 800 on the other. This is not a bad alternative though because you can use the 400/800 cable for other applications. This G-Drive is quiet, reliable, and worth every penny.

For the price, it's a solid hard drive, runs pretty decent, never really had any real issues with them, wish they ran a little faster, but for the price, it's a great little storage drive.

I use this for my Apple Time Machine. Worked perfectly out of the box. Is more compact than the 2TB version I bought a few years back, very sleek and professional looking. Since it's new, I can't testify to its durability over time, but I only use G-Tech or Glyph drives in my studio and can testify to their dependability over many years of use.

I own several G drives and have been using them for the past 5 years. Non of them have ever given me trouble. This 3TB is the biggest one I have now and so far it's working as it should. And being on a Mac, fits right in aesthetically and functionally...plug n play. As for size, I got this to sit by my 27" iMac and not for portability. So if you want portable, go with the mini Gs.

For the size, price and features, I don't think you can find a better hard drive. As a digital DJ and video artist, I have a huge database of music, samples, and other media and the G-Drive does a great job of serving those up exactly when I need them. The fans are a little loud, but definitely doable.

My music and photos/videos eat up the majority of my laptop storage, so I have my iTunes library, iPhoto library and Time Machine backup all on this drive. The thermostat-controlled fan is great, and it's pretty quiet even when the fan is on.
The FW800 interface is FAST. I moved my entire library and set up a time machine backup in 30 minutes or so. It's not too hard on the eyes either, and blends in well with Apple's line of products.
No problems with it so far.

Using as time machine back-up for a Mac Pro. Unpacked it, set it in place, plugged it in and activated time machine. That was all there was to it. It has worked flawlessly since.
