Designed to address the needs of the professional audio community, the iLok2 USB Smart Key from Avid is a portable, convenient, hassle-free way to store software authorizations. The key is required for all optional Avid and Avid-distributed plug-ins, plus many other third-party plug-ins and software options for Pro Tools 6.1 and higher.
The newer version has a more compact form and allows the user to insert iLoks side by side in adjacent USB ports. Additionally, a single key can hold up to 500 authorizations.

A substantial improvement over the original iLok, which always felt flimsy, and jutted out so far from a computer (especially a laptop) that it was at risk of being broken off by a careless motion.
Aesthetically, a far more pleasing design as well.
The negatives: Should still be smaller. Couldn't this be designed so barely a small part portruded outside the computer?
Also: The use of a cap is asking for trouble. The cap is simply too easy to lose. Either an attached cap, or a retractable design, would have made the most sense.

There are no alternatives to the iLok: if you need to run ProTools 9, plugins, etc., you will need the product. The new design is substantially better than the iLok1 - it fits comfortably in a row of USB ports. Note that the cap is detachable, and will likely be lost quickly. Also, the iLok2 will stick out about 1.75" from your computer. If using with a laptop, you will likely need to detach it before putting your computer in a travel bag/case - so don't lose the cap.

Being smaller than the old iLok is great. The blue LED though...when will this trend end? Thankfully, it's refracted through a bit of plastic, so it's not super irritating. If it is within your field of vision, you will notice it.
Holding more licenses is great too.

Works perfectly to hold software licenses. However, it will not work with the Firefox browser. It took me a while to figure that out, but then it worked fine with Safari (Mac OS 10.6.7)

Much improved design. I own the original iLock, and upgraded to the new one. It not only holds more licenses, but it also fits into the usb port on my 17" Macbook Pro without inhibiting access to the other usb ports. Its design also matches the styling of the laptop. Highly recommended!!
Comments about Digidesign iLok2 - USB Smart Key:
I have 2 studios working with Pro Tools 8. My idea was to buy the Ilok2 to make a copy of the license from my Pro Tools 8 M-Powered, so I can work with both at the same time. But this is not possible, you can only make tranfers of serials.

Software[...]worked well. When putting the thing on a key chain, the cap could probably fall off. I've had this happen to other usb keys. In any case, this is used for Pro Tools Auth, and is working fine.

This product is great, not only because you need it for most audio programs it is easy to use; the installation was SO easy. And it's small size is so ideal; I carry mine on a key-chain. There has been NO flaws with this drive and the fact that it is a USB port makes it even easier! It is beyond durable, and it can hold up to 500 authorization codes! The ilok2 may be small but it sure can pack a punch!
