I searched for the best quality/price in an external USB blu-ray player/ reader/ writer, and this model has fit that bill perfectly. I primarily wanted to use this player as an easy, portable USB powered blu-ray player that I could easily transport and plug into my laptop, without having to deal with a power cord, etc.
I wanted to back up my DVD and blu-ray collection to my hard drive (as MKV's), and so far this model has been great. It is very quiet, without any excessive buzzing or "whir" even running close to 6x speed. Through the testing I've done, I can back up a blu-ray disc in 30-45 minutes easily.
The included software allows for you to actually play the blu-ray/DVD on your computer, and isn't too bad. It is nice to have as an option to play on a computer - I choose to just play the files through a Boxee Box on my TV after it has backed it up (just takes a little time to let it install)
The main disadvantages that I have noticed is that the included software does take a while to load when a disc is inserted. The drive is very light weight (which is great), but feels like the weight/quality of a laptop's disc drive. It may be my laptop (running Windows 7), but the drive will only be recognized and read a disc if I plug the USB cable into the same USB port that I originally installed the drivers. Not a big deal, but something to keep in mind in case this happens to someone else.
One last note: the included cable has a mini-USB plug that plugs into the actual drive, then it has two USB plugs that are used to connect to the computer. The instructions say that only the main black USB cable should be required, but for some reason, the extra USB cable can be plugged into another USB port to provide extra power. I have only had to use the one, black USB cable to plug into my laptop, and it's been fine.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with my purchase and hope others find the same results!

I'm trying to use the bundled software that came with the drive on Windows 7 under VMWares Fusion 3 on my Macbook Pro. The Blu-ray player bundled with the software package will not run under a virtual machine and I have yet to find one that does. I can not partition the ssd's on my computer in raid stripe so, that cancels that. And for some reason DVD Player on the mac side wont work either. I was forced to use a third party player for standard DVD's as well. I tried contacting Lacie for trouble shooting and it takes them days to respond to the ticket. A little frustrated........

Comments about LaCie Slim Blu-ray External 6x Blu-ray Drive:
I've used a LaCie Blu-ray burner before but it certainly wasn't portable. This little guy fits in a fairly small pouch inside my backpack which is great. Its light which is great but the construction seems pretty cheap. I'm actually a little worried that it may break with some rough handling. The other odd thing about the construction is its super cool black glossy cover seems to scratch incredibly easy. I still like it and give it 4 stars because it is really portable and the other big plus is that it is USB powered. I wanted this because I work on the road a lot and need to burn blu-ray on a plane sometimes and this is perfect for that.
Bottom line is it works and works well. I've burned several blu-ray with it so far and it is rock solid at its job. I just wish it was literally rock solid. With some improvements to its case it would get 5 stars.
The other nice thing is that it works well with the new Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Encore.

I needed a new optical drive for burning as well as watching DVDs on my laptop. This drive does the trick and just plugs right in. And now I can even burn projects to a blu ray if I want. The price is ok too. Would be great if it was about $100 less.

The drive has lived up to my expectations on both Windows7 and OSX. Thought for the latter you need to buy additional software to play Blu Ray.
Service was fast ad the delivery from the US to Australia only took a couple of days. Faster than adviced on the web-page.

Comments about LaCie Slim Blu-ray External 6x Blu-ray Drive:
I only give this product three stars because it provides the bare necessities for creating Bluray discs. The build quality is satisfactory, but not quite bulletproof. It is compact, lightweight, and bus powered.
It is an affordable way to enter the world of Bluray - my rating is simply allowing room for more rugged, professional devices.

I wanted to hook this up to my MacBook Air to PLAY BD. I missed the part about this drive NOT playing "commercial" BD movies. It does not. Very disappointed. I could have paid a lot less for a DVD external drive.
