The Sony HDR-XR160 Camcorder is a mid-range high def cam for those looking to do more with their video. Aside from capturing 1920 x 1080/60p HD footage, the XR160 puts tools like a back-illuminated CMOS sensor, a 3.0" touch screen LCD, 42x Extended Zoom, and optical image stabilization with Active Mode at your fingertips. No matter what format you choose to shoot in, the camera records to a 160GB hard disk drive. You can also save your video to Sony's Memory Stick media or SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards.
A number of shooting controls also come in handy for making your videos the best they can be. Tracking Focus locks onto a specific subject, while Intelligent Auto automatically sets the camera for your situation. Other noteworthy features and functions of the XR160 include 5.1 channel surround sound audio recording and Clear Phase stereo speakers, among others. When you're all done shooting additional features like Event Browse and Direct Copy come to your aid for fast retrieval and archiving of your footage.

We purchased two of these cameras to provide a good strong optical zoom that would let us have more flexibility for camera positions when we cover seminars and conference/lecture situations. We like the ability to plug in external mics for interview situations, but we are disappointed the camera doesn't have an earphone jack. We also wish Sony had retained the standard LANC connector for remote controls instead of changing it to the A/V R plug, which required the purchase of an expensive adapter cable to use our existing LANC controllers.
Image quality is excellent, the Dolby 5.1 sound from inbuilt mics is surprisingly good.
File transfer from the camera using included Sony PMB software is OK, but we'd like to be able to set a filename default in the camera and hav it increment file numbers, instead of the current design which bases the file name on the camera's internal clock at the time you press start. This can cause confusion among takes when you are using multiple cameras started at the same time.
Overall, however, the value for price is top notch and will help us avoid some more substantial camera purchases for most of this year. We may even buy a couple more of these, they are that good!

I JUST WENT TO NEW MEXICO'S Bosque del Apache Wildlife refuge where there were millions of Snow geese on the water. I wanted to video the huge cranes coming in in flocks to land. First the view window was impossible to see in the sunlight and it would not auto focus on the birds in flight. It tried to focus but went all blurry on the sky instead of focusing on the birds. cam needs a viewfinder you can get your eye up against and aim at the subject. You cannot even see the rec. in bright light. Very frustrating. works great indoors where you can see the view window and aim the cam. Pictures seem sharp and good color. I,m sorry, I know this is not what you would like to hear but it is the truth. I cannot change that.

This product is amazing. Although it looks like any other HD Handycam, but it's very different it many ways. The camera already comes with 160 Gb hardrive, so that is saving some money right there. Two features why I bought this product is picture quality and the sound be cause with crystal clear HD videos and a 5.1 surround sound inside this Handycam. Video and sound are a filmmakers essential tool. Hoped you enjoyed the review!

This is really a great product. I researched on this camcoder before buying it. It looks good to me so i thought i will buy it. Got this product delivered on time. When i start using it, i was amazed with the picture quality and the sound quality is awesome. Very handy, easy to use. I would recommend read the instruction manual before using it. Battery life is also good. I would recommend this product who looks for a great mid range high definition camcoder.

Got this camcorder to replace my old sony camcorder that used the small digital tapes. Used this camcorder to record my grand daughter in a dance recital at church. Awesome HD clarity and was very easy to use. The main plus is the 160 gig hard drive. Don't have to worry anymore about having to change the tape in the middle of my recording.

I am using this product for 1 month. I am very impressed with its performance. It has awesome image clarity. Auto focus is quick. Manual focus by tapping the screen is also a great feature. Optical image stabilizer works perfect while zooming. I like the slow motion video capture feature, but did not realize before that its only for 3 seconds.
The still image quality is not great. But the good thing is you can take snapshot while capturing video. Overall, the product is very good deal.
