The Brother HL-2240D Compact Personal B/W Laser Printer with Duplex is a wallet-friendly printer that's designed with the professional in mind. The HL-2240D also fits well in cramped quarters, thanks to its small footprint. And because a high-yield replacement toner cartridge is used, along with the option to use the Toner Save mode, the cost of consumables stays low.
The HL-2240D prints up to 24 B/W 2400 x 600 dpi pages-per-minute. It can be feed via the 250 sheet paper tray or with a single sheet, manually. printing very nice, duplex works good. I carried the printer in a suitcase overseas with no problem. The price is amazingly low. Since I use it overseas with a transformer from 220V, I found out, the hard way, that you are not supposed to connect ground. With ground connected the USB cable creates shorts.

For the price this printer can't be beat. All the advertised features work like they should. The automatic duplexing works as it should and is a nice feature.
The only thing that would make this printer better is if it was network capable so I could print from my smartphone, but I just share the printer on the network through Windows so my other computers on the network can print from it, so the lack of that doesn't bother me.

This is obviously an entry level laser, but don't let that discourage you. For the price I don't think you can find a nicer laser. This printer is very fast including for double sided printing. Setup is a breeze. It is alittle noisy compared to the Canon and HP inkjets I have owned over the years. It dosen't have wifi but for the price that is to be expected. You can buy drum cartridges for about $70 retail oem or $40 aftermarket that are supposed to be good for 12000 pages. I would buy this again in a heart beat.

It was cheaper for me to upgrade than to give in and replace the drum on my HL-5140. I got the same reliability, compatibility and legal size paper capability plus, 2 sided printing. To top it all off, the print quality was even better than the HL-5140 in it's best days!

I purchased this printer after reading the other positive reviews (not only on this site but on others, as well), and I'm extremely happy with my purchase. B&H shipped the product promptly and packaged it well ... so that was a good sign before ever removing the printer from its box. The setup was a true breeze (I'm on a Mac); took 5 minutes max and worked flawlessly. The quality of printing is more than acceptable (blacks print richly and both grayscale and black type/graphics print crisply). Noise level is low (even lower than I expected) while the machine prints and is non-existent when not printing. I'm extremely happy with my purchase; the value is unbeatable and it serves my low workflow needs very, very well. Thanks, B&H!

I've never really been a fan of Brother products, especially their smaller fax machines but this little printer really seems nice for home or a small office. For its size its a lot faster than it looks and even has duplex that usually costs more on comparable units. I really don't print a lot of things but am way tired of ink jets and their inherent problems of having to always buy ink etc way too soon. I looked at HP and Kyocera before going with this and the competition was just too much higher so I gave this one a whirl and am happy with my purchase. I can't attest to how it would perform in an environment with tons and printing but its perfect for my needs and other good news. It automatically installed without a hitch to my new iMac even after I updated it to OSX Lion. Plugged in the USB cable and within like 10 seconds it was ready.
B&H is great and a favorite place to get goodies and good deals.

I am a retired person with years of computer experience, but I'm no authority. I am using this
Brother HL 2040D printer to supplement the Canon MP 800 that I have been using for years and with which I am very satisfied.
The installation of the laser printer was very easy; the instructions on the CD are very good. As an ederly person, it did take me longer than it should, particularly since I had never used or owned a laser printer previously.
I downloaded and printed out the 146 page manual with the printer set to duplex, and I believe it did print very close to the 24ppm as promised. The printed product was very satisfactory with the lower dpi setting.
As I have used the Brother printer for only a few
weeks, I can't give any other specific information.
I would recommend this printer to others.

Although I have not used this product too much, yet, from page 1, it appeared to be just what the doctor ordered. i do not need color, but with previous inkjet printers, even a blue web address was blank. This printer shows addresses in a nice shade of grey and all printing appears sharp. The printer is easy to load, use, and is quite fast.
