The Canon VIXIA HF S30 Flash Memory Camcorder is more than just a way to record your memories it provides you with numerous ways to flex your creativity while keeping your budget in check. The fact that the HF S30 shoots 1920 x 1080 high def video makes it appealing, but the HF S30 goes beyond basic 1920 x 1080i with 24p native capabilities. Recording with the 24p frame rate you can spice up the HD recording with a cinematic look that's great for aspiring film makers. In addition, the 24p Cinema Mode and 30p Progressive mode (both recorded at 60i) create videos that are also cinematic or Internet-friendly.
When it comes to recording memory, the HF S30 has 32GB of internal flash storage, with an additional 2 SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slots. That means you can store up to 12 hours of HD video to the internal memory alone. The camera also uses relay recording, a function which automatically switches from one recording media to the next for uninterrupted capture. At the heart of the HF S30 is a 1/2.6" 8.59MP CMOS sensor and Canon's DIGIC DV III Image Processor. These two work together to capture stunningly detailed and vivid video and 8.0MP still images. After taking some film classes, I saved up all summer for my Vixia HF S30. I looked at other camcorders, and DSLR cameras, but decided that this one was in the right price range for my first real camcorder.
I've used the HF S30 for personal and "semi-professional" use. I film for fun, but also for freelance work. I've filmed things including: my friend's baby shower - interviewing her entire family; live music (promotion for the band); short films for youtube; Whitewater adventure footage (on the river), etc...
So far, the only real limitations I feel are from:
a) the sensor's ability to handle low light:
The camera does WONDERFULLY when there's proper lighting, but captures less-than-HD-quality footage when there's not enough light.
b) the mini "manual" focus nob
A weird little knob that is difficult to rack focus with. The camera's auto-focus works pretty darn well in most situations, but for those times when you want to take over, this camera is (unfortunately) not as empowering as Canon's "XA10", which costs about a thousand more...
and c)The included Software
I feel a sort of aesthetic disconnect between Pixela's "Video Browser"/"Transfer Utility" and Canon's EPICNESS. The software isn't all that bad - the way it organizes the files into folders by date is kind of handy, but, there's not enough user control. And (although this has nothing to do with functionality) for people who work with VISUALS all day, the programs are not that COOL looking.
All in all, the camera is AMAZING. I love the touch screen, and the extra memory card slots!
I've been able to produce some serious content with the HF S30, and reccomend it for anyone who doesn't need a camera with the extra bells and whistles (it has plenty of it's own!). Whether you're a hobbyist, enthusiast, or even a new student of film, this camera can help you capture your fondest memories and bring countless stories and dreams to life!

Just for recording family events, so not Professional XF or XA, but viewfinder was one of the important criteria as a SLR user and not to bother people around when shooting.
Your choice is only between G10 and S30. G10 is 1.5 times more expensive with minimal advantage over S30 on spec sheet, and picked S30.
Viewfinder is total disappointment from rough low resolution - I can take it if it's a $300 camcorder.
User interface, or menu handling is nightmare.
Canon so much struggled with interface for their early days of EOS digital, and I expected unified interface at least for software (menu), but it was not the case at all. You have to move menu list itself unlike moving highlighter on EOS. And the menu list doesn't scroll as you move your finger.
Custom key function is great, but you don't have option to assign WB to the key. You have to go into that dull menu list to change WB.
Relay recording is also nice, but it is cancelled every time you power the camera off, and you need to set it again if you want it.
Recorded daughter's high school orchestra when they did better performance than usual, but the recorded sound through internal mic was terrible without low pitch sound, making the record like the worst performance ever.
You will definitely need external microphone if you want to record sound.
Picture quality is good, but I assume you don't see any big difference in picture or any other major functions with a lot cheaper M series models.
Price is way too high for this model, and M should be enough for the similar feature / spec. Otherwise you have to spend much more for Pro models.

This is a high quality camcorder; love the quality of the video and 8MP stills.
I'm concerned about the interfaces to a MAC OS machine...the Pixela software only works on windows, unless you can find a work around.
The LCD screen is a little tough to navigate and I still can't find out how to set up my Canon stereo microphone; it needs to be setup and I can't find the screen to set it up!
But, this is a high quality HD camcorder that was priceless in capturing my 4 year old's first walk down Main St. in Walt Disney World. I would highly recommend it to anyone that wants a high quality machine.

The one thing this camcorder has, that others in this class don't, is a viewfinder. This is great for shooting outdoors when the sunlight makes it difficult to see what is going on on the LCD screen. This camcorder also has a higher image quality/resolution, which impressed us.

I purchased this as a multi-use video recorder, with plans to use it for regular family videos but also some videography. So far, I've not been disappointed. I've been mostly shooting video in hi-res, and the image quality is excellent. I've also used it in lo-res mode for smaller videos, and the quality is still excellent and it performs well in both arenas. Pro: excellent video quality, low-light works very well. Image stabilization seems to be good. Sound quality is clear and very good. Cons: I don't like the only touch screen menu. When you want to adjust things while on a shoot, it can be cumbersome to try to get to the correct menu as finger-swiping doesn't work real well. It would have been better to have a button/joystick to get to the correct menu, not to mention that pretty soon you get finger marks all over the screen, which can cause some difficulty with viewing in full sun. The zoom button can be a pain, it isn't at the best finger location and the default zoom setting can cause jerky application (that can be adjusted I believe, I've not messed with it yet).
Overall it is a great camera and it is easy to use except if you need to change settings on the menu. I like it a lot and am very pleased with the camera.

Easy to use, some thing you need to look in the manual to find out but overall easy. Used it for an out of town conference and used to for a live stream came out great with no problems. Picture is excellent, the stabilizer works surprisingly good used it in a car worked awesome. The focus sometimes likes to focus on other things but quickly adjusts itself. Overall great camera for price, dependent on your budget and what you want to do with it. I recommend for any amateur filming or mid grad commercial use.

I am enjoying this Vixia HF30 a lot. I am using the still photo option a lot more than thought I would. Its convenient. I don't need to lug around the Nikon and all the lens's. I knew that before I bought that it would not work with my Apple. Thats where the but comes in. I want support out of the box. Just went back to the IBM, for now, so still need to research software support. The telephoto was a lot more than I expected. The wide angle is not enough for tight spots. Stabilization is awesome. The camera is a thumbs up for me!

I love this camcorder. The videos of my 2 year old granddaughter are so nice and clear on my 60 inch Samsung TV. Even in-doors at night with only the lighting in my home the videos are wonderful. The color LCD touch screen makes operating the camcorder a breeze. I have been able to figure out everything I have wanted to do with the help of the well-wriiten instruction manual. So, far I haven't found anything I don't like.

After taking some film classes, I saved up all summer for my Vixia HF S30. I looked at other camcorders, and DSLR cameras, but decided that this one was in the right price range for my first real camcorder.
I've used the HF S30 for personal and "semi-professional" use. I film for fun, but also for freelance work. I've filmed things including: my friend's baby shower - interviewing her entire family; live music (promotion for the band); short films for youtube; Whitewater adventure footage (on the river), etc...
So far, the only real limitations I feel are from:
a) the sensor's ability to handle low light:
The camera does WONDERFULLY when there's proper lighting, but captures less-than-HD-quality footage when there's not enough light.
b) the mini "manual" focus nob
A weird little knob that is difficult to rack focus with. The camera's auto-focus works pretty darn well in most situations, but for those times when you want to take over, this camera is (unfortunately) not as empowering as Canon's "XA10", which costs about a thousand more...
and c)The included Software
I feel a sort of aesthetic disconnect between Pixela's "Video Browser"/"Transfer Utility" and Canon's EPICNESS. The software isn't all that bad - the way it organizes the files into folders by date is kind of handy, but, there's not enough user control. And (although this has nothing to do with functionality) for people who work with VISUALS all day, the programs are not that COOL looking.
All in all, the camera is AMAZING. I love the touch screen, and the extra memory card slots!
I've been able to produce some serious content with the HF S30, and reccomend it for anyone who doesn't need a camera with the extra bells and whistles (it has plenty of it's own!). Whether you're a hobbyist, enthusiast, or even a new student of film, this camera can help you capture your fondest memories and bring countless stories and dreams to life!

As a Canon Digital EOS user, thought Canon Camcorder would have the same high standard and chose Canon.
Just for recording family events, so not Professional XF or XA, but viewfinder was one of the important criteria as a SLR user and not to bother people around when shooting.
Your choice is only between G10 and S30. G10 is 1.5 times more expensive with minimal advantage over S30 on spec sheet, and picked S30.
Viewfinder is total disappointment from rough low resolution - I can take it if it's a $300 camcorder.
User interface, or menu handling is nightmare.
Canon so much struggled with interface for their early days of EOS digital, and I expected unified interface at least for software (menu), but it was not the case at all. You have to move menu list itself unlike moving highlighter on EOS. And the menu list doesn't scroll as you move your finger.
Custom key function is great, but you don't have option to assign WB to the key. You have to go into that dull menu list to change WB.
Relay recording is also nice, but it is cancelled every time you power the camera off, and you need to set it again if you want it.
Recorded daughter's high school orchestra when they did better performance than usual, but the recorded sound through internal mic was terrible without low pitch sound, making the record like the worst performance ever.
You will definitely need external microphone if you want to record sound.
Picture quality is good, but I assume you don't see any big difference in picture or any other major functions with a lot cheaper M series models.
Price is way too high for this model, and M should be enough for the similar feature / spec. Otherwise you have to spend much more for Pro models.

I use this for a web series. I can adjust aperture to a low setting and have tight focus and thus have a shallow depth of field for a much more professional look.
I would use this for personal or professional use, so long as its professional use was limited.

I use this product primarily on a tripod and in tight spaces on specialized mounting hardware. I only have two cons about it:
a. The hand strap is not removable w/o some disassembly of the camera
b. It requires some additional software to be loaded on my windows 7 computer before the device will be recognized by the utility manager on the USB port.

Just got this for the holidays. Excellent picture quality. Very light and easy to hold. The sound recording is great. I've been filming using 24P. Looks amazing. I had to buy the extended battery, The one that it comes with will last about 1hr. Need to get a MINI-HDMI to HDMI cable if you want to connect directly to your HDTV. The size is a little bigger than expected. Wanted the smallest carry bag I can find, so I bought a lens bag (Tar-Mac) to place the camcorder in.
The LCD is nice and big. The touch screen LCD works like an Iphone but not as smooth (needs improvement). Did not have a good experience with the remote control. For some reason it was not able to pick signal further than 8ft and was very picky with the aiming.

This was such a good purchase that my wife agreed it wasn't such a dumb stunt after all (and I have the video to prove it!).
The item was purchased to compliment wide angle photography. I was frustrated because the stunning landscapes that trigger a transcendental experience in person too often translate into just plain dull on the uncropped image shot below 24mm. A slow pan with the Canon and you have captured the panorama and it's ambiance. It even stows in my Lowepro Slingshot 100 (the Nikon and the Canon seem to get along when the cover is zipped shut).
My prior video experience was a couple of technology generations ago. Short battery life, really noisy autofocus servos and the royal pain with all the incompatible media pushed me out of the market.
Now it's a Brave New World out there. Because of HD, hours of battery life, electronic zoom and USB all is changed, changes utterly. (Apologies to Yeats)
