The versatile VIXIA HF R20 even lets you capture a still image from an already recorded movie. While playing the movie in your camcorder, simply press the photo button to capture a 1920 x 1080 still image onto an SD card or to internal memory. - 24p & 30p Frame Modes

24p Cinema Mode enables all aspiring moviemakers to achieve a professional "film-look." You can change the camcorder's frame capture rate to 24p (recorded at 60i), which provides the appearance of the same frame rate as movie film. In addition, you can use the VIXIA HF R20's CINE mode, which changes the color and tonal characteristics, evoking the look and feel of a movie shown in a theater. For added flexibility, these settings can be used together or independently.
You would normally have to look to professional video cameras in order to find a sophisticated tool like 30p Progressive Mode at your command. In addition to the standard interlaced video frame rate of 60i, you may choose to set the VIXIA HF R20 to capture video in 30p, (30 progressive frames, recorded to 60i) which is particularly useful for footage to be used on the Internet. It's also excellent for action and sports shots. In addition, this setting gives enhanced quality to photos captured after recording

To maximize the usefulness and versatility of the VIXIA HF R20, you'll find a range of terminals to extend the capabilities of your camcorder. Easy, one-cable connectivity to your HDTV is achieved through the VIXIA HF R20's HDMI terminal which also supports CEC and x.v.Color. A mini HDMI cable is included with the camcorder. This camcorder also features 1080p output, converting 1080i video to 1080p through the HDMI terminal.
A microphone terminal with manual audio level control and a headphone terminal provide exceptional audio adaptability. I did not expect much and was pleasantly surprised with this cam . aside of being compact and light , it proves unprecedented indoor footage quality for camera of this class, which really makes it perfect for light home video use. on board memory is good to have, but there is room for expansion.
the star is taken off due to fixed size battery compartment, which prevents from using high capacity batteries (as far as i know). with limited life of the battery provided it is quite a downside. also to consider uncomfortable touchscreen controls. to somewhat remedy the difficulty canon includes a piece that can be used as stylus. but in reality once you configure the cam to your liking there is very little reason for going into it again.
bottom line - simple, compact cam with excellent footage quality. unless you looking for specific functions like manual focus or add external microphoneand such it will fit the bill.

Takes great video, compact, easy to use once you learn the menus. Having to refer to the on-line PDF manual is a pain to get going with it, but it is somewhat intuitive. Being able to relay between internal memeory and add-on SD (A) would nice.

It's great for "quick and dirty" jobs. Fragile, compared to professional build gear, but incredibly small and light for when you can't bring full gear. I love the fact that the AV port doubles as a headphone jack. On the downside, the menus are a bit clumsy. With no viewfinder, the screen can be hard to see in sunlight.

Picture quality on this (very) lightweight and compact unit is amazing for a consumer level product. One very useful feature is the ability load two memory cards in addition to the built-in 8 gb memory .. and when one of the three storage locations is filled, the camera auto sequences the next available card into operation seamlessly.
I wish, though it: a) had better low light results. They are ok, but could be better. b)had longer battery life. 85 Minutes is all you will get. Canon could stack two batteries in this camera just as the memory cards can be stacked, Or a battery pack attached to the camera just many DSLR's have extra battery power built into the hand grip... c)came with an external charger so you can always be charging a spare battery when the camera is in use. d) came with a printed user manual e) had a hotshoe mount for external light or mic f) even little consumer cameras such as this should get a lens hood for better picture results

I used the camcorder the other afternoon to film a soccer game in which my Korean student participated. It did a great job of filming the action even though I was experimenting with the use of the camera for the first time. The clarity of the picture is super! I am still trying to learn all the apps and features of the camera. It will go with me to Nicaragua soon on a mission trip. I am looking forward to taking some great videos of the work there.
