Canon's VIXIA HF R21 Flash Memory Camcorder is a mid-range high def camera with flash memory recording, a number of shooting controls, and enhanced audio capture thanks to mic and headphone connections. With this range of features the HF R21 is great for anyone, but especially for those looking to make more sophisticated movies without breaking the bank, like students.
The HF R21 provides 1920 x 1080 recording to a 32GB internal flash memory and to SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. With 2 memory card slots you have the potential to record up to 2TB of footage without switching out cards. The flash memory also allows for transfer of files on the internal memory to the removable cards for easy transfer of all your memories to your computer. When it comes to the power behind that HD recording, the camera features a 3.2MP CMOS sensor. This sensor works together with Canon's DIGIC DV III image processor for stunningly detailed footage. Other ways the HF R21 captures great images include a Genuine Canon HD Video Lens with 28x Advanced zoom, a 3.0" touch panel LCD, and Dynamic image stabilization. Your video will not only be detailed and life-like when you're watching it on that big HDTV, but it will be stable, in focus, and just what you expect when you're recording via the generous LCD. The HF R21 provides shooters a great advantage for audio with the headphone and microphone connections. A must for capturing high quality audio, these connections allow you to make every video truly your own by enhancing your creative avenues. Another way in which this camera proves itself a great value would be the various shooting controls. The HF R21 allows you to make things as easy as possible when recording, while it also gives you the ability to put your creativity to work. The 24Mbps recording feature provides incredibly detailed and life-like video, while Smart Auto, Tele Macro, and face detection take the guesswork out of shooting. In addition to being a worthy camcorder, the HF R21 also moonlights as a digital camera. Shoot stills right to the flash memory, using any number of dedicated still features. And since Canon knows what it's like to be torn between taking video and capturing stills at the same time, they took that painful choice out of your hands. The camera lets you take still images from already shot video. You can capture up to 30 photos from just one second of video. You'll also have the flexibility of copying video from your VIXIA HF R21's internal drive to removable SD memory cards. That makes it easy to insert the card into your computer or HDTV's card reader and view your recorded footage immediately.
The advantages of flash memory go beyond the added recording time. You'll also appreciate the quick response time, because there are no moving parts. Press the record button and your VIXIA HF R21 starts recording video faster than you've ever seen before. In addition, when you review, you'll have quick access to your footage
While shooting, Touch Decoration can be activated via the Touch Panel LCD, allowing you to superimpose and record a variety of fun and exciting images along with your video. Animations such as shooting stars, thought bubbles, and others, freehand drawing, stamps, and various decorative frames can be added to give your vide an amusing and creative flair
In fact, the system is so intelligent that it will recognize faces turned downwards or sideways. In addition, a specific face may be selected as the main subject for continuous tracking. This feature is convenient in searching for clips which feature that specific subject's face. In search and playback, use of the Face Index will display those frames with the chosen face as a thumbnail in each shot in which it appears. Your selected face can also be linked as a timeline to further identify footage containing your subject
The VIXIA HF R21 is also compatible with the Eye-Fi SD memory card. It's possible to wirelessly transfer video and photos to your computer, or upload them directly to online sharing sites (e.g., Facebook, YouTube, Shutterfly, Flickr) in a few simple steps. Insert an Eye-Fi SD memory card into the SD card slot on the camcorder, configure your computer to select the target site and you're ready to share your files with family, friends, and the world! 1
The VIXIA HF R21 comes with a Level Marker feature to keep your camera level for more professional-looking photos. The VIXIA HF R21's Grid Marker feature lets you compose your shot accurately, according to the grid in your viewfinder. You can even choose from two different colors for the grid ensuring that you see the grid, no matter what the background color of your shot is.
The versatile VIXIA HF R21 even lets you capture a still image from an already recorded movie. While playing the movie in your camcorder, simply press the photo button to capture a 1920 x 1080 still image onto an SD card or to internal memory. Additionally, the VIXIA HF R21 allows you to capture 30 photos from one second of video. Now, better photos, filled with action and expressions, are easy to grab, print, post and share
You would normally have to look to professional video cameras in order to find a sophisticated tool like 30p Progressive Mode at your command. In addition to the standard interlaced video frame rate of 60i, you may choose to set the VIXIA HF R21 to capture video in 30p, (30 progressive frames, recorded to 60i) which is particularly useful for footage to be used on the Internet. It's also excellent for action and sports shots. In addition, this setting gives enhanced quality to photos captured after recording
A microphone terminal with manual audio level control and a Headphone terminal provide exceptional audio adaptability. For the ultimate in flexibility, the VIXIA HF R21 is compatible with the optional Canon wireless microphone WM-V1. Using a receiver which plugs into the microphone terminal, its audio can be captured from up to 164 feet (50m) away. Use it to record audio from a distant subject, or as a transceiver to cue shooting from a third party
The bundled application is compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista

As an professional outdoor video photographer we typically use Canon XH-A1's, but we needed a camera to use in those instances when a second camera is needed on a project. The other application would be for those rare instances when a dedicated cameraman is unavailable. The "Touch & Track" feature is desirable for those "less than wide open" filming situations when "maual focus" is required but not possible to utilize in a self-filming situation.
The lack of an XLR imput is not particularlly problematic in those situations that we need to employ the camera and is, most likely, a non-factor for the typical end user. The solid state media is convenient and helps to reduce our costs.
let's face it, this is a consumer product. Overall, I would say that this camera delivers a tremendous value for the money....If you don't like the features and performance, you probably need to increase the amount of funds you are willing to allocate for a camera, and realize that you need to purchace the next level up.

I am a Professional Video Producer who's company needed a temporary camera while are Sony FX-1 was being fixed. So we chose the "best" camera, according to reviews, for less than $500. This camera is where we were pointed. Camera is easy to use, but obviously not a pro camera. Shoots 1920x1080 HD video, but that does not mean it's going to be "Good" video. the CMOS censor is okay and is TERRIBLE in low light. Nice to have 32 gb internal memory and 2 SD card slots. Image quality is decent is brightly lit areas. I have not compared this camera to others in it's category. I'm used to using Pro Camcorders.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R21 Flash Memory Camcorder:
I use this camera to produce short films. It shoots in a very high quality and has a wonderful zoom. The external mic input is great (a rare feature on cameras this affordable). The built in mic is also surprisingly usable. The one reason I took away a star is that the included software is not Mac compatible and I find that to be a drawback, however anyone knowledgeable with computers should be able to get the footage from the camera onto a Mac without much trouble.

Had this for about a month. Extremely useful camcorder. I was doubtful at first. But sound and video are truly amazing.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R21 Flash Memory Camcorder:
I got this camcorder to replace (augment) my MiniDV camcorder but I was so shocked at being so tiny. My clients are going to laugh at me. But that's ok, I can make it work for my style of video work.
I did notice that this refurbished model is slightly different than the same models on sale in the stores and listed on Canon's web site. This one says 20x zoom, yet the ones in the store are 24 or 28x zoom.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R21 Flash Memory Camcorder:
This camera and outfit, including extra battery and Audio Technica lavalier mic, raises the level of expectation for return on investment. The image quality for normal lighting is terrific. Low lighting doesn't qualify as anything but archiving an event. And my expectation for those events is low, also. For the cost, the Vixia is terrific. With 32gigs built in, there's almost no need for an extra card, but with two SDHC slots, you're covered.
Add a wired lav, and interviews become intimate. Add a joby, and not only do you have a tripod but a camera support device for handholding.
I am delighted by this camera. If only it imported directly in FinalCutPro. I have to transcode it using Streamclip or iMovie.
Easy to use and high quality are the benchmarks here.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R21 Flash Memory Camcorder:
I have 3 of these that I use to record long convention seminars. The dual SD chip slots allow very long recordings without worrying about running out of memory. Its great they have a mic input and headphone input. The mic input level is adjustable to accommodate a variety of input sources. The picture is very good for a low end camera. Some gimmicky effects, like the sketch tablet, are hokey. But, you don't have to use the cheesy effects, so who cares. I recommend it. Its small and batteries last well too.

Comments about Canon VIXIA HF R21 Flash Memory Camcorder:
We use this camcorder to film shows in our theatre for our archive. We shoot from the back of the house -- about 75 feet away -- and using only stage light. The Canon is terrific.
Love the photo-taking feature. They're not as a good as a real camera, but they're fine.
The controls are fairly intuitive. We've got two 32g cards in it, and combined with the internal memory, the recording time is really good even at the highest quality.

Picture quality for the money is excellent. The sound could be a lot better. I used this to replace a Sony Handycam and glad I did. The first time I used it my friend next to me liked it so much that he bought on for himself the next day.

Great quality, huge 32GB internal hard drive, two slots for additional SDHC cards, nice touch screen, and great performance. If anything, the battery life for a standard battery is 75 minutes, but they are inexpensive and easy to replace. I highly recommend this camcorder!
