The dedicated Vello EW-78E Lens Hood for Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens is specifically designed for use with Canon's EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens.
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens, by extending and shading the end of the lens. A dedicated lens hood is designed to perfectly match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Bought for Canon 15-85 that cost over [$]. Canon did include with the lens... so sad.

Puting 3 stars, because on my canon 15-85 lense you can see the end of the hood in the pictures when you are wide open at 15mm.

Comments about Vello EW-78E Lens Hood for Canon EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:
Here is my personal experience with this hood.
When used in the forward direction, this is a great hood. Fits like a glove, nice smooth movement, everything I would expect from the original Canon.
When use in the reverse (storage) direction, well now we have a problem. Before the hood properly engages, it gets stuck. If you look carefully at the hood you will see that the walls that engage the camera's ring when used in the reverse direction are just a little bit thicker than the walls that engage the camera's ring when used in the forward direction. This additional thickness makes the hood practically impossible to mount in reverse. For my hood, instead of a nice 90 degree movement and a click into place I could go about 10 degrees and then be jammed/stuck.
Since it was an inexpensive part and I figured that I didn't have a whole lot to loose I used a dremmel with a fine sanding bit to sand down this wall making it thinner. Now I can put the hood on in the forward direction (no change in feel at all) but also in the reverse direction without the getting stuck part.
I would not describe the hood as having flimsy construction, just a wrong dimension on good construction.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Only with full disclosure as I have done here and only if my friend could re-produce my modification making it a worth while hood.

Comments about Vello EW-78E Lens Hood for Canon EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens:
I was anticipating that this hood would not be the same quality as the one provided by Canon. It is very rigid and attaches smoothly and securely to the 15-85 EF-S Canon lens. Highly recommended!

There is no 3rd party Lens hood like this in Canada, only sheety rubber ones. And I hate paying $75 for a piece of plastic. B&H comes through again with a great price [...]
