Vello IR-N1 Infrared Remote Control for Select Nikon Digital Cameras
The Vello Infrared Remote Control is a compact and easy-to-use remote switch with a 15' (5 m) range for Nikon digital cameras that support infrared triggering. All you have to do to make it work is to set your camera (in the menu) to accept remote triggering, then aim the remote at the infrared (IR) sensor on your camera.
The IR-N1 enables you to capture images without touching the camera, thus reducing image blurring and allowing you to concentrate on other things, i.e. interacting with your baby to capture a once-in-a lifetime expression or a fleeting moment.

I bought this hoping that it would approximate the tiny Nikon remote control that I used when borrowing a friend's Nikon D50. I purchased in combination with the CML-L3 case (a 1.5"x2.5" pouch that threads on the Nikon strap), expecting it to fit.
The good news is that the pouch is a handy place to store lens papers. Unfortunately, the remote is about twice its size and is consigned to my camera bag. Not too inconvenient, but less so than a strap-mounted one.

My only complaint is that it has a very short range. But I am not trying to photograph anything a this time that requires that. It works great as long as you are within about 6 feet of the camera, and point at the front.

This thing is great! I bought it to use with my Nikon P7000. I can use it pretty far away if I don't want to affect the lighting, plus it's great for shooting with slow shutter speeds.

This little gem is terrific! No more worries about camera shake. All of my pics come out crystal clear even at a low ISO. And it's much cheaper than Nikon's remote. Just be sure to change your release mode to remote.

I have to say that I am really impressed. I was concerned about how well it would work and if it would be sort of directional. It isn't at all. It works from all around the camera and at quite a ways away. Haven't measured how far but at least a good 10 feet. I use it with my Nikon D5100.

This is useful to shoot self portraits or group shots with you in the picture, or any time you want to shoot without being behind the camera. My D7000 allows you to choose a delay after pressing the remote shutter button, so you can press the button and then quickly hide the remote so it doesn't show up in the picture.
