This Fujifilm FinePix S4000 14MP Digital Camera (Black) offers a lot for a photographer looking to upgrade to a more advanced camera: 14MP resolution, an incredible, high-quality wide-angle 30x optical zoom lens (24-720mm equivalent), an electronic viewfinder and advanced features commonly found in sophisticated DSLR cameras.
Beginning with a crystal-clear, 3" LCD monitor with 230K-dot resolution, the S4000 has high sensitivity up to ISO 6400 that allows you to take pictures at dusk and other low-light situations, and CCD shift image stabilization prevents camera shake from ruining a good shot. Automatic scene recognition will know when you're shooting a portrait, a landscape, a night portrait, a macro shot, etc. and make the right adjustments to give you the picture you want. The macro function allows you to photograph a subject as close as 0.78' (2 cm) from the lens. Tracking auto focus keeps a moving object in focus, and the face/smile/blink detection mode optimizes pictures of people, catching the smile and missing the blink.
And on top of all these techno-goodies, you get HD video with 720p resolution for those times when only a movie will do.

I am a retired sales and marketing professional and was looking for a camera that was simple, yet sophisticated enough to take "Better than your average" point and shoot camera. I have tahen over 300 photos in the first 2 weeks and have learned that the subject is everything. The camera has more options than I thought I needed but as it turns out they have helped me create several outstanding photos. If you want automatic you've got it and if you want manual you also have it. I have taken Micro PHotos that are unbelievable and action shots that have come out clear and almost saleable. I have started to think of a pet photography retirement busiiness and this camera seems to be perfect. For what I needed and hope to move into this is a 9 out of 10 as far as I am concerned.

I bought this camera to replace my 8 year old Fuji S-5000 that the CCD had gone bad in.
What's GREAT? The 30X zoom. The image stabilization. And the large "screen" on the back.
What's missing? The S-4000 has no "diaopter" (focus) adjustment on the EVF, (electronic view finder). I use the EVF for about 99% of picture taking. And with no way to focus it for my eyes,(I always remove my glasses to shoot a picture), the image is blury. Like a pair of binoculars out of focus. And the only way to clear it up is to leave my glasses on, tilt my head back, & look through my bi-focals, which only works indoors out of the sun. Because out in the sun. My glasses auto-darken to the extent that I cannot see the EVF through them, so I would always remove them to shoot a picture.
Also, the S-5000 had a "screw on" lens extension about an inch or so long, that protected the lens from either being bumped, scratched, rained on, or from direct sunlight. And you could also remove it to attach a "filter" if you wanted.
So far, I have only found 2 pixel settings for the S-4000. "7 & 14". The S-5000 had; 1,2,3,&6 for settings. I would prefer to shoot at 3 most of the time. But this is just a small complaint.
Also, You have to open the "battery" compartment to remove the SD card. And if not carefull, you could wind up dumping your batteries on the ground while changing the card.
I haven't decided yet. But I might send this camera back to B&h, and shop for one that has the features I need. That's the only problem with ordering online. You don't know enough about the product untill you "own" it.

The camera is lightweight, well performing, and everything I was waiting for, including the 30X digital zoom.
One word of caution: the disc included with the equipment contains a virus (TROJAN virus) that was installed in my computer when I uploaded the disc. My antispyware got rid of it and I de-installed the software so.... I have no FinePix software.

I was looking for an SLR digital but didn't want to spend a fortune and found this little camera.
Great focal length(zoom), has enough options, manual, aperture priority, shutter priority, etc.
Picture quality seems to be very good. I've had it a couple weeks now and have taken scenics, hot air balloon show, close ups and they all came out excellent. Very pleased. I used to take wedding photos (semi-pro) so I'm used to an SLR and with my eyesight failing as I age the option of viewing through the lens vs the lcd screen is super. I looked at a number of other cameras in the price range but opted to go with Fujifilm since it's been around so long. Don't hesitate to buy it if you want something resonable in price which takes nice photos.

I wanted a digital SLR camera for some times now and found this little jewel. I wanted something that wasn't too complicated but had options to customize my photograpy plus something that wouldn't break the bank. I consider myself an advanced photographer because I used to actually take wedding photos some years back. Anyway, I've had this camera for a month and have tried all the options and the pictures come out VERY good. The zoom range is perfect and the color retention is excellent. If you want to move up to an SLR type camera and don't want to have to go to school to learn all about it, this is the camera for you. [...]

This camera has been an amazing add to my selection of cameras. Really, unless I need a high power camera this is the only one I carry. The 30x zoom and auto function is great and the panoramic option is seamless and keeps the proportion very well. I'm very satisfied about my purchase and would highly recommend anyone get it whether you're an established photographer or someone just starting out.
