Sony ECM-CG50 Pro Shotgun Microphone
The Sony ECM-CG50 Pro Shotgun Microphone delivers high directivity, signal-to-noise ratio and pristine audio results. Its lightweight unobtrusive design is ideal for long usage and the microphone is supplied with a custom shockmount and windscreen. A low-cut filter switch reduces unwanted low-end noise, and the ECM-CG50 is powered with a single AA battery, or plug-in power. The Sony ECM-CG50 delivers clear intelligible speech in noisy environments, making it an ideal choice for weddings, outdoor use, interviews and more.

I am a professional and this Mic really makes a difference, good quality/clarity noticeable on first use. We tested in snow and you could hear the crunching of our feet and sliding sled down the hill. Only things: Remember to shut it off there is no light when on. Windscreen is good to about 12knots direct wind, slightly less from the sides. You may need to manually set your audio levels a little higher for normal use, or compensate In mixdown. I would recommend this mic. WHAT A DIFFERENCE

I needed a mic that ran on its own power, and those are few and far between - at least those that hook up directly through XLR. I bought this thinking that with an adapter, I'd be fine. But once I went through XLR into my Sony prosumer camera, the sound was barely audible. Nothing we tried worked.
If you're going to buy this camera, make sure you're connecting it with the cable attached for optimal audio. It seems like a nice mike if it's compatible with your gear.

I bought this mic largely because of its simpler, lower-profile mount, and based on Sony's reputation and the good results I'd had with the XLR short shotguns on my Sony PD 150 & 170s. Bad choice. I cannot speak to its performance on standard camcorders with a stero mini jack input, but it far underperforms the Rode Video Mic I use on my other Canon 7D. Signal strength of this mic is much lower than the Rode, and there is notably more background hiss because of the lower track volume. I'm returning it on Monday to trade for the Rode -- and sticking with Rode's more bulky anti-shock mount.

A must have for the NEX-VG10 if you want to have any focus on sound in front of you. The inbuilt mic take almost full circle with almost same sensitivity (great in some situations but not in the most common).
