The HDC-TM900 High Definition Camcorder is a high-end HD offering from Panasonic. Right off the bat a few of the camera's most desirable features include: 1920 x 1080/24p recording, a 32GB internal flash memory, an SD memory card slot, the option to record in 3D, and a quality image sensor system. These features alone give you detailed, beautiful images, a plethora of recording space, and the ability to shoot fun and unique movies in 3D with an optional lens.
Let's take a closer look at the 3MOS system and 1080/60p recording. Panasonic's proprietary '3MOS' is a 3 sensor CMOS that adds up to 9.15MP (3 x 3.05MP). These sensors work together with another Panasonic technology, Crystal Engine PRO. This engine is a fast processor which writes those gigantic HD files to the HDD or SD card quickly and efficiently. It also allows for high-res zooming when exceeding the optical range. In addition, the engine works to reduce image noise, rendering beautiful, like-like images. These two work together to produce 1080/60p footage. The "p" means progressive; when recording in a progressive frame rate the footage captures is more vibrant and detailed than even "i", or interlaced, HD recording. In the world of consumer camcorders, 1080p is the gold standard.
Of course the sensor and engine wouldn't be able to do their job without a high-quality lens. The TM900 comes with a 35mm Leica Dicomar lens that sports a 3.45-41.4mm focal length, 12x optical zoom range, 46mm filter diameter, and a 1.5-2.8 f/stop. Lens can zoom up to 20x using the Intelligent Zoom; and it features a manual ring for more control and creativity with your shooting. Another way in which the camera works to create clean video is with HYBRID O.I.S. (optical image stabilization). This O.I.S. keeps your shots steady when hand-holding the camera. It reduces the effects of hand-shake for an easy-to-view, clean shot.
Other useful tools of the camera include a very generous 3.5" touch screen LCD. This screen provides you with options like, "Touch Zoom" and "Touch Shutter". The zoom function allows you to zoom in by dragging your finger across the LCD. The shutter function enables instant touch focus on a particular subject in the frame, and the option to switch to still-image shooting. The camera also features 5.1 channel Dolby Surround Sound recording, and 5 built-in electret condenser microphones. You can capture true Surround Sound that targets your subject, while minimizing wind and extraneous sounds.
In addition to all these useful features, the TM900 also gives you the aforementioned option of recording in 3D. Using the optional VW-CLT1 conversion lens from Panasonic, you can capture 3-dimensional footage. Your 3D videos can then be played back on any 3D TV that is compatible with the side-by-side method. Giving the camera a 3rd identity would be its ability to capture up to 14.2MP still images. A dedicated iA mode will automatically switch to 1 of 5 scene modes for optimized capture.
The TM900 also features numerous shooting controls, like face detection or Intelligent Auto, which help to take the guesswork out of video recording. These controls allow you to make recording simple, so you can focus on the moment and not figuring out the correct settings. Other notable features include microphone and headphone connections, an extendable electronic viewfinder, and a cold shoe for mounting optional accessories. And when it comes time to share what you've shot, the TM900 provides you with various options as well, from editing software that lets you upload to the web to a fun in-camera playback feature.
Intelligent Resolution Technology
The Intelligent Resolution Technology incorporated in the new Crystal Engine PRO uses edge detection technology to confirm the edges of objects within the image, then emphasizes the edges for optimal clarity. For example, it brings crisp definition to patterns and the outlines of objects like flowers. Conversely, it reduces noise and enhances the natural smoothness of parts without edges, like the sky. The increased sharpness is especially effective for images with delicate details. This highly advanced technology maximizes the beauty of Full-HD images
Only half of the image data is reproduced in each picture. Fabric patterns run together, and moiré patterns appears
Reproduces all of image data in a single picture. Patterns in fabric are crisp and clear with no color bleeding
Picks up audio from all directions to reproduce a natural, life-like sound field
In Zoom mode the microphones are linked to the lens action. When you zoom in on a subject, the microphones focus on the sound in that same direction
With the five highly directional microphones, this mode enables the microphones to focus on sounds coming from right in front of you, even when the lens is not zooming
The technology of the previous Wind Cut function has evolved to form the Wind Noise Canceller. The new function automatically detects and suppresses only wind noise, to give you natural sounds with lifelike ambience. Also, unlike the previous Wind Cut function, which switched to monaural recording, the Wind Noise Canceller enables stereo recording. This maintains natural sounds when shooting outdoors
You can adjust the level of low-frequency sound that is included in the audio track while shooting
Set the HD camcorder to Digital Cinema mode to shoot in the progressive 1080/24p (24 pictures per second) format for NTSC area, and in the progressive 1080/25p format for PAL area. Progressive scanning captures clear, vibrant images with intricate detail. You also get faithful images with an appealing film-like quality
Selecting the Digital Cinema Color mode makes it possible to shoot film-like images that are ideally suited to the Digital Cinema Color of VIERA plasma TVs. Colors recorded in this mode look richer than those recorded using the conventional Panasonic standard. For example, the subtle shades of red and gold in flowers, and the greens of leafy trees are remarkably true to life
Because the left and right eyes are located at different positions on the face, the left and right eyes perceive slightly different images. The difference between the two images is called 'visual disparity'. The brain processes these 2 images with visual disparity to reconstruct spatial conditions, enabling us to see things with 3-dimensional depth
Images for the right and left eyes are simultaneously recorded through 2 lenses, using a 2D conversion lens that artificially reproduces the phenomenon of visual disparity
The TV alternately reproduces the left and right images, which are viewed through 3D Eyewear. To play back 3D videos, simply insert an SD memory card in the slot of a Panasonic VIERA 3DTV or a side-by-side method compatible 3D TV
You can easily zoom in and zoom out by simply touching the LCD with your fingertips. Shoot at any angle of view while watching the screen
Even when shooting movies, you can touch the subject on the screen to instantly focus on it, and easily switch to still-image shooting
You can flip through thumbnail pages, display one of the thumbnail scenes, highlight a scene, and more, with easy, intuitive, fingertip operation
Active mode comes in handy when shooting while walking or playing with your children. The wide correction area corrects even relatively large hand-shake motion. It's especially good for active video shooting
This mode captures faces beautifully. With Soft Skin mode, complexions are automatically enhanced to make faces attractive
This mode is ideal for shooting wide landscapes and sweeping vistas, such as at the ocean or in the mountains. It balances the exposure over the entire frame to prevent brighter parts of the image, such as the sky, from being washed out or having blown highlights
The camcorder automatically uses this mode for scenes with particularly strong contrast, such as when you're shooting a spot lit area on a darkened stage. It captures the well-lit subject perfectly and prevents washed-out areas
In dim lighting, the camcorder automatically switches to a slower shutter speed so that images across the entire frame are bright and easy to see
Sports, Portrait, Spot Light, Snow, Beach, Sunset, Fireworks, Scenery, Night Scenery, Night Portrait, Macro
There is a mic input terminal on the side of the camcorder. Plug in an external mic (optional) if desire
Optional accessories can be attached here to increase shooting versatility
Just rotate the ring to zoom in and out. You have full control of the zooming speed and can zoom in or out to the precise degree you want
Just rotate the ring to focus. You can focus on the exact point you want, even if it's not in the center of the frame. You can also change the focus as you shoot, to get the kind of creative shots you sometimes see in movies
Select from Auto, Indoor, Outdoor and White Set according to the location, weather or type of lighting. You'll always get the best possible coloring even if the light source changes
The shutter speed can be adjusted from 1/24 to 1/8,000 of a second. Use a high shutter speed when shooting sports events or fast-moving subjects, and you can get clear, sharp, incredible action shots
Use the ring to adjust the aperture to regulate the amount of light let in. You can also use this setting to attain a shallow depth of field, blur the background, or create frames that emphasize the foreground, for creating movie-like expressions
A "zebra pattern" is displayed in areas of the frame where the lighting is excessive and the image is over-exposed
The light level is metered at the center of the frame and displayed as a percentage (%). This serves as a guide when you're shooting a subject that's backlit, or when you want to keep the light level the same even though the lighting conditions change
The histogram displays in graph form the exposure and contrast conditions over the entire frame. This lets you determine fine gradation details that are difficult to tell by just looking at the screen
This function detects subjects who are registered in advance and automatically snaps the shutter to catch the subject's best possible smile. It's great for capturing the smiles of certain people in a group
This function automatically snaps the people within the LCD frame smiles. It gives you shots of an entire group of people smiling, making it great for group shots
Simply touch a subject within the LCD frame. This function will then lock on and start tracking your subject. When the subject smiles, it'll automatically snap the shutter
How to combine motion images that are split onto two types of media as a continuous scene
The Relay Recording mode automatically switches from the built-in flash memory (once it's full) to the SDXC/SDHC/SD Memory Card and continues recording. You don't have to worry about missing an important shot while switching media
You can also use the editing software that is included with the camcorder to join the split data as a continuous scene
If the SDXC/SDHC/SD Memory Card is not big enough to hold all of the split data, use a DVD burner to create a disc with all the motion images as a single continuous scene
Enjoy more impressive highlight playback with natural switching effects
View highlight playback of the images you've taken, together with a variety of fun effects
Enjoy highlight playback with speedy, dynamic effects
Enjoy highlight playback with dramatic effects applied mainly to your subject's faces
The Face Highlight Index selects scenes that have faces in them and displays them in an index format. This handy function lets you quickly find and view scenes that have people in them
The camera automatically selects and displays the most exciting scenes. It determines the level of importance of each scene based on zooming and panning, and whether there are faces. This gives you an easy, convenient way to view all the highlights together
This mode divides each recorded clip into 3 second, 6 second, 12 second, 1 minute and 5 minute intervals, and displays them. This is convenient when you want to find a specific scene within a long clip
Connect your HD camcorder to a VIERA or compatible Blu-ray Disc Player via an HDMI mini cable, and you can control both units in synchronized operation with a single remote control. This kind of simple, easy operation makes it enjoyable to view your recordings
Just slip the SD card from your camcorder into the VIERA Image Viewer card slot on your VIERA TV, and you're ready to view full-HD moving images recorded
You can make a copy either in the original high-definition AVCHD format, or in the standard-definition DVD-Video (MPEG-2) format. Choose the one that matches your playback equipment
Use the included HD Writer AE 3.0 software to save Full-HD 1080/60p data onto a PC or an SD card
To view the disc you just burned, simply connect the HD camcorder to an HDTV via an HDMI mini cable
When the camcorder is connected to a PC, the software automatically starts up. Importing data takes only a few clicks of the mouse
The videos you've recorded are easily uploaded to YouTube or Facebook in their original high quality. HD Writer LE 1.0 lets you share your videos worldwide
It's easy to add titles, rearrange scenes, provide transition effects, and edit images in single frame units
Make a copy either in the original high-definition AVCHD format, or in the standard-definition DVD-Video (MPEG-2) format

I bought this to replace a Panasonic PV-GS300 MiniDV camcorder that still works great. I was looking to move away from tape to make it easier to copy video clips to my DVR (MythTV) to share with family on the big screen. There were lots of warnings I found in my research about getting the 1080/60p footage to a computer, but I did not have any issue copying it directly to Win 7 with Sony Vegas Pro 10 installed. Even Windows Media player will play the clips. I did not install the Panasonic HD Writer AE 3.0 software.
I use the camcorder mostly in automatic mode and have been really happy with the results. The large focus ring is easy to use to either zoom or focus manually. I recently took it backpacking to grab videos and stills and found it convenient to take pictures while recording video. The camcorder is smaller than taking my Nikon D50 setup and the pictures in auto mode are excellent to capture the memories, not as good as the Nikon but I took more pictures than I would have if I lugged both cameras with me.
I was a little surprised when I hooked this up to the computer that the files were read-only. I guess they want to make sure you do not accidentally delete video and pictures. You must delete them from the menu on the camcorder or set it to record only to the SD card and use a card reader. I have a 64GB SDXC Class 10 card installed, but so far I have barely used half the 32GB of the internal memory.
The menu system is a little confusing as they have Quick menus and the main menu. Some things only exist in the quick menu, so don't expect to find everything in the main menu. Quick menu items that have been handy are the backlight compensation and the pre-rec mode. It is fairly easy to switch the camera to manual focus mode if you need.
I had purchased a quality UV filter to protect the lens and the automatic lens cover. What I did not realize is that the camera flash is within the diameter of the filter threads. That means the flash can only work properly if I remove the filter, otherwise the flash reflects on the filter and washes out the picture. Not a big deal as I don't usually need the flash and it is simple to remove the filter when needed.
I'm happy with the low light performance as it is so much better than the GS300 I had. I was close to getting the Canon, but it was $500 more and the Panasonic was rated better for automatic mode. The Panasonic has the manual controls for when I get the time to compose and plan a shot, but mostly I don't have the time when trying to record the kids.

I can't figure out why reviews say this camcorder has great image quality.
I find I like a lot of things about this camcorder except the image quality.
It's not sharp and the picture is jerky. I can't find a easy way to produce a DVD that looks good without a lot of work.
Don't use a Mac. Imovie is useless.
My Canon HV20 beats this camcorder when it comes to HD footage.
I must be doing something wrong if everybody else loves the image it produces. I wanted a camcorder that doesn't use film and I chose the 900TM over a canon like the G10.
I will keep trying but I wish I hadn't bought this camcorder. Also the price has dropped over $200.00 or more since I bought mine. I will sell it back to B&H and buy a Canon if they would let me.

Primary projects include a 2-5 minute video for promoting a product or creating an illustration. The audio surprisingly is captured in five tracks so you can pick the one that sounds the best with little clean-up required in most closed situations. Most of our scenes are not low-lit which seems to be the weaker area of this camera. Very little sport shooting as well - so no need for the fast capture. Great fit for us!!

Before buying I read all the reviews which were mostly positive but several comments about the fan noise. I HAVE NO FAN NOISE.
The video it produces is outstanding. The small size, which is common with most other camcorders today, prohibits me from doing much hand held shooting. The controls are placed where they should be and I just find it a joy to use.

This camcorder is just OK.
I have used the Panasonic TM700. The TM900 is better in low light than the TM700. Howerver, it seems the video produced by the TM900 is not as sharp and as colorful as the video produced by the TM700 if you provide enough studio lighting for the TM700.
The TM900 does not come close to the dynamic range of colors produced by the Canon HFG10 when you are producing a video outside. Inside, the TM900 seemed to produce an image that was close and slightly sharper than the HFG10.
When I used the TM900 in portrait mode, the image was slightly underexposed and the color was flat.
This camcorder is nothing great, but just OK.

I have to admit I was skeptical about this pint sized photog. I'm no DP by any means but needed to get something to shoot prof videos with ease and little education. This camera worked out great. Very easy to learn and start producing very nice work.
I was a little disapointed with the "24p Cinema" effect. I've Directed several projects on higher end camera and this version of a 24p is not very impressive. If you want 1080 at 60p, this is your baby! Very little post work to produce videos that my clients have been impressed with.
The menu takes a little getting used to and may seem a bit cumbersome but once you use it a few times you pick it up.
Wanring: if you are shooting with any lens cover or filter do not use the Image Stabilization, you will get serious vignette in the corners. Maybe picky but annoyed me the first few days ... just turn it off.

I got this about 3 weeks ago and i use it every day to make videos.
Things that are great-
- Love the EVF
- great picture! people can't believe how such a small camera can create such dazzling video
- The actual camcorder itself just looks really sharp.
- love how there is both a Mic and headphone jack
- very comfortable in my hands
-the format works well with Sony Vegas which is what i use to edit
- many many more
Things I dislike-
- white balance can be wacky, I usually just set it to manual to fix it
- for me personally some parts of the menu are wacky.
Would I suggest this camcorder?
Yes! I wouldn't change my order or do anything differently if I could. Strongly suggest this!

Great camera but the instruction manual is not user friendly. The camera has so many features you tend to trip over them moving around the camera. Also - when you set the features for filming and turn the camera off - some settings reset without warning - very frustrating. Downloading footage to a MAC is very complicated and the manual makes it more confusing.

Bought this recently in time for a spring break trip. This is my first HD camera and I must say I'm very happy with it. The picture is fantastic using the 1080p mode. Stability control is great and low light performance appears to be quite good too. Still pictures look very similar in quality to my Panasonic still camera, which was a nice surprise, although I don't expect to use this one for stills much. I've only had it for a couple of weeks, but so far I'm quite impressed.

Very happy with this camcorder. Have been trying it out in many different ways for two weeks and find its flexibility and quality of results to be extremely good. My main complaint is that even with wind noise supression turned on I seem to get a lot of wind noise in windy situations. Also I wish the still photos had more MP -- but that's not the main purpose I'll be using it for anyway.

I bought a TM700. Loved it. Bought a second, used, for more than what I paid for the first, cause they don't make them anymore! Needed another small, 3-chip Panny so I took the plunge and bought the TM900. (Insert record scratch here)....
I knew that it didn't have the same flip screen controls and I knew it didn't have a separate charger (how 1997 Canon Alura is that?). But I didn't think the batteries would be different! I have six batteries I use with my TM 700's and they are worthless for this cam! ARRRGGH!!
Also, the on off controls are different, using a sliding switch vs. the convenient thumbwheel switch, which was always accidentally switching to photo mode when you wanted a quick shot. So THAT'S a plus.
Other than the battery issue, it's a good camera - it's a Panasonic! The TM's have the BEST Image Stabilization I have ever seen. I can film a train going 60 mph one-handed while I match speed next to it on a freeway 500 ft away and it literally looks like you're using a dolly or cam-car. Quiet "blacks", saturated colors. Very nice 4:2:0 color space.

I spent a couple of weeks researching all of the similar class cameras (Canon, Sony, etc,...) and I found that not only did the TM900 perform as well or better in all categories, it was considerably cheaper. I have always loved Panasonic products and was not surprised that this camera was of such a high quality. I am using this for business (shooting product demo videos) and family shots. I really like the shoe mount, viewfinder, external mic input among other things. The only thing I dont particularly like about this camera is the menu. It is a but cumbersome to navigate through but once you get the hang of it, there is really no major issue. All-in-all an exceptional product from one of the leaders in the camera industry.

Comments about Panasonic HDC-TM900 High Definition Camcorder:
I use this camcorder for recording my family. The video quality is absolutely superior to the standard definition camera, with tapes, that I was previously using.
Positive - I've listed 11 of them:
1. The touch screen interface is very easy to use.
2. There are zoom controls on the edge of the flip-out screen that you can use, in addition to the zooming lever on the top of the device. It zooms at a single, moderate speed, which can help you if your notorious for zoom in and out too quickly.
3. The image stabilizer does an excellent job.
4. The camera will accept additional lenses.
5. The low-light recording is admirable.
6. You can attach a lamp to the camera to improve the lighting in dark areas.
7. You can record about 2.5 hours of video on the highest quality (1080p/60fps) with the built-in hard drive.
8. In addition to the Solid-State Drive on the camera, you can put in a memory card as large as 64GB.
9. When you close screen, it automatically puts the camera into a power save mode and covers the lense. The lense cover is built in. When you flip open the screen, its instantly on - no waiting.
10. The screen will rotate 180 degrees, making it easy to record yourself, when necessary.
11. I've had no problem with fan noise that some complain about. The fans seems to be quite, if not silent.
Negative - I've listed 4 of them:
1. The file format that it records in is very hard to find a media player that will play it smoothly, when you've recorded in the highest quality (1080p/60fps). Maybe the problem is that I only have a dual-core 3.0GHz CPU and need a better one for that good of an image, but I doubt it. The manual states that it may not be possible to find compatible software to play the video in the format that it's recorded. It records the video into .mts files, which can be dragged and dropped to your computer. If you use the Panasonic software, it will transfer the video to your computer as .mts2 files. After you've done that, if you run the decoding process, on that file, it will cut the frame rate in half from 60 to 30, but then my computer can play it in Windows Media Player without a problem. Letting the camera do this conversion process takes about twice as long as the length of the video, itself, though. The manual indicates that using your computer to do the conversion would take 20 hours for each hour of video if you had a quad-core Intel i7 2.8 GHz processor. I, like the book, recommend letting the video camera do the decoding.
2. The device only transfers the data to your computer at about 20MB/s. Whenever you have tens of GBs, this seems silly. It's USB 2.0, which has a theoretical limit of 60MB/s. For the price, I think they could've given it a faster SSD.
3. I would have preferred that it came with an HDMI cable, instead of component (red, green, blue) cable. If you want to get an HDMI, it needs to be a mini-HDMI on the end that plugs into the camera.
4. The Panasonic editing software seems to not recognize many file formats. It recognizes the .mts2 files, but it doesn't seem to recognize the .mts files.

Being a pro videographer, film maker for nearly 40 years I am a skeptic about these little cameras, but I have to say this Panasonic TM900 is outstanding. The image quality is amazing. The amount of video you are able to record onto the hard drive or the 32GB SD card just blows me away. We have all the full size pro cams and I can't believe this image is as good at the more expensive cameras. Go and get one now.
