The Panasonic HDC-SD80 High Definition Camcorder not only provides you with HD video, but flash memory convenience and a number of helpful shooting functions. After you pop in an SD/SDHC or SDXC memory card (and charge the battery of course!) you're ready to start recording high-quality 1920 x 1080 video, and even 3MP digital stills. Flash memory recording is not only free from the hazards other recording media like DVD or hard drives possess it's easy to transfer and store. This makes uploading for editing and sharing on the 'net hassle-free and fast!
When it comes to the core features of the SD80, you'll find Panasonic's Crystal Engine Pro and a 1/5.8" CMOS sensor at its heart. The sensor may capture that stunningly detailed footage, but the engine lends speed when processing, along with smooth zooming and noise reduction. The camera also has HYBRID O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) to ensure blur-free footage. Other features include 42x Intelligent Zoom, a 33.7mm wide-angle lens, and a 2.7" touch panel LCD.
New to the SD80 would be Panasonic's zoom microphone and wind noise canceller. These two features help you to zone in on your subject's audio, while reducing wind noise, all without the need for an external mic or headphones. Panasonic also gave this camera its Intelligent Auto function. iA takes the guesswork out of shooting by giving you a menu of pre-set settings for capturing the best video possible for your particular situation.
Have fun after the shooting's done. The Advanced Highlight Playback function automatically selects dynamic scenes and arranges them, with music! You'll have an instant montage to share right on the camera! And when it's time to edit and share your video or photos, the SD80 comes packaged with Pansonic's HD Writer AE 3.0 software. Upload footage to your PC for editing and sharing on sites like YouTube or Facebook. Panasonic's optional VIERA Link and optional DVD burners can be used to help archive and share your footage shot on the SD80 as well.
The Zoom Mic function that links with the camera's zoom action has evolved even further. Compared to previous models, the noise-reducing performance is improved by 1/3 (-10dB). It lets you clearly record the sound of your target subject
The Wind Noise Canceller automatically detects and suppresses only wind noise. It lets you capture natural sounds with lifelike ambience even when shooting in windy conditions outdoors or by the sea
Active mode comes in handy when shooting while walking or playing with your children. The wide correction area corrects even relatively large hand-shake motion. It's especially good for active video shooting
This mode captures faces beautifully. With Soft Skin mode, complexions are automatically enhanced to make faces attractive
This mode is ideal for shooting wide landscapes and sweeping vistas, such as at the ocean or in the mountains. It balances the exposure over the entire frame to prevent brighter parts of the image, such as the sky, from being washed out or having blown highlights
The camcorder automatically uses this mode for scenes with particularly strong contrast, such as when you're shooting a spot lit area on a darkened stage. It captures the well-lit subject perfectly and prevents washed-out areas
In dim lighting, the camcorder automatically switches to a slower shutter speed so that images across the entire frame are bright and easy to see
This function detects subjects who are registered in advance and automatically snaps the shutter to catch the subject's best possible smile. It's great for capturing the smiles of certain people in a group
This function automatically snaps the people within the LCD frame smiles. It gives you shots of an entire group of people smiling, making it great for group shots
Simply touch a subject within the LCD frame. This function will then lock on and start tracking your subject. When the subject smiles, it'll automatically snap the shutter
You can easily zoom in and zoom out by simply touching the LCD with your fingertips. Shoot at any angle of view while watching the screen
Even when shooting movies, you can touch the subject on the screen to instantly focus on it, and easily switch to still-image shooting
You can flip through thumbnail pages, display one of the thumbnail scenes, highlight a scene, and more, with easy, intuitive, fingertip operation
Playback image effect mode
Enjoy more impressive highlight playback with natural switching effects
View highlight playback of the images you've taken, together with a variety of fun effects
Enjoy highlight playback with speedy, dynamic effects
Enjoy highlight playback with dramatic effects applied mainly to your subject's faces
The Face Highlight Index selects scenes that have faces in them and displays them in an index format. This handy function lets you quickly find and view scenes that have people in them
The camera automatically selects and displays the most exciting scenes. It determines the level of importance of each scene based on zooming and panning, and whether there are faces. This gives you an easy, convenient way to view all the highlights together
This mode divides each recorded clip into 3-second, 6-second, 12-second, 1-minute and 5-minute intervals, and displays them. This is convenient when you want to find a specific scene within a long clip
Connect your HD camcorder to a VIERA or compatible Blu-ray Disc Player via an HDMI mini cable, and you can control both units in synchronized operation with a single remote control. This kind of simple, easy operation makes it enjoyable to view your recordings
Just slip the SD card from your camcorder into the VIERA Image Viewer card slot on your VIERA TV, and you're ready to view full-HD moving images recorded
You can make a copy either in the original high-definition AVCHD format, or in the standard-definition DVD-Video (MPEG-2) format. Choose the one that matches your playback equipment
To view the disc you just burned, simply connect the HD camcorder to an HDTV via an HDMI mini cable
Also Enjoyable When the Shooting's Done
When the camcorder is connected to a PC, the software automatically starts up. Importing data takes only a few clicks of the mouse
The videos you've recorded are easily uploaded to YouTube or Facebook in their original high quality. HD Writer AE 3.0 lets you share your videos worldwide
Chooses the most exciting scenes and plays them all together, back by music
It's easy to add titles, rearrange scenes, provide transition effects, and edit images in single frame units
Make a copy either in the original high-definition AVCHD format, or in the standard-definition DVD-Video (MPEG-2) format

I wanted to get a High Definition camera with all the bells & whistles, but I also wanted it to be cheap and small. Let me tell you: Yes, you can have the Best of Both Worlds if you look hard enough! Panasonic HDC-SD80 High Definition Camcorder is TINY; it literally fits in the palm of my hand but yet, it has plenty of features that you would normally find in much bigger and more expansive cameras. It is extremely fast, as well. As soon as you open the side panel I mean the screen, the camera is already ready for action. When you close the screen back, it turns itself of, automatically. How cool is that? You don't have to worry about draining your camera because you forgot to turn it off. I also like the fact that it has a touch screen, which makes it easy to navigate. The menu is VERY intuitive and there is also"info" option for every function. That way, if you are not sure what a specific feature does, you simply touch the info button then the function that you want to learn about, and voila! The camera gives you the full description of that function in complete sentences. By doing so, you don't have to refer back to the manual. What a convenience! The camera has also a built in flash that comes on automatically when it's too dark, and even a "movie" mode that you would find in much more expansive cameras. The optical zoom is x38 and it can go up to x 42 WITHOUT deteriorating the image quality. I am also very pleased with the battery life. You really do not need to carry a spare battery unless you are going to film for more than 4 hours non-stop.Last but not least, the camera has this really cool feature that adds background music (you can change the type of music by the way) and very cool transitions to your filmed pieces on a specific playback mode. I have never seen such a feature in any other camcorder!Oh yes! One more thing which is the best part and that's the price of the camera: I ONLY PAID [$] FOR IT at B&H Photo and Video! B&H shipped the camera to me at no charge. I did not pay any tax for it either since I live in Florida. Can it really get any better than that? I've told you, you can get THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS IF you do your research! By the way, don't look anywhere else because I've already research this camera online. B&H has THE BEST PRICE and THE BEST SERVICE!Enjoy! Happy Shopping!Reha Erman

The was a cheap but effective camera to be used as a stationary camera (audio not needed) for a podcast studio. The other cameras in the studio cost over $2,000, but this worked for a wide shot. It is very light-weight and has a plastic (oh this will break in two weeks) feel. It puts out a decent HD signal, but I would not use in the field. It is what it is and is getting the job done.
If you want an inexpensive (MMJ) field camera and can live without zoom capability, I would get an iPhone instead.

The SD80 is a very handy little HD camcorder for the price you pay. Sure it's not in the same class as the TM900, but you are paying a tiny fraction of what a TM900 costs.

My husband and I recently bought this camera primarily for home videos of our son. It works great! It has great image stabilization and picture quality. The audio and zoom are good and it works very well in low-light settings. It is light-weight and compact so it is easy to bring along on trips. I would buy it again without hesitation.

Really like how small it is, could fit in a purse without being bulky. Seems to have great quality and nice features like "shake-reduction" and still picture ability. The touch screen is also nice. Haven't used it a lot yet, but so far it seems great!

As a casual videographer (only on vacations, family gatherings and when we have wildlife in the back yard), I was looking for high value/low price and this camera really fits the bill. The only real negative comment I've seen in reviews is that it will not shoot 1080p, "only" 1080i. Well, our televisions are 720, so I'm not likely to see the difference :) Ease of use, simple to understand, does everything I need. The only drawback is that it did not come with a mini-HDMI to HDMI cable.

I bought this camera for my small business. I'm going for a more aggressive video marketing campaign, but am not a film professional nor do I have the funds to hire pros.
This camera is easy enough for me to use, and has manual settings which is nice for more control. It doesn't compromise on the quality of the videos. They're crystal clear and would say it's up to par with a lot of what we watch online these days.
It's very small and I was surprised it was so light.
At first I attempted to use the camera in a low-lit room at night, and the result was a very grainy, low quality video. Found out eventually that I needed more light. It works amazingly in the day with natural sunlight. If you have studio lighting equipment that might help in the night time.
The sound is awesome. Crystal clear, and as if I was speaking right into a mic.
The zoom is crazy. It zooms so far in to places and things my eyes can't even see.
It connects really easily to my PC too.
Great investment!

For the price, this camcorder is awesome. We had a Flip video camera for years and this is WORLDS better, not much bigger, not heavier. Why didn't I do it sooner! Haven't transferred it onto a dvd yet but so far, so happy with it. Don't forget to order a memory card but otherwise I didn't buy anything else for it yet.

I went to Guatemala for spring break and I used this to take some short videos. I played them on my computer and they look brilliant: crystal clear and the color is pretty balanced and vivid. The battery life is much better than its predecessor SD-60. It's even lighter so that I could put it in my pocket. At this price range, I cant ask for more and I don't know if other companies can have such products with such a nice price.
The camcorder was down though...but B&H agreed for an exchange and I am happy to ship it back.

Bought this camcorder to film the grandkids. The overall video quality is pretty good. Quality definitely takes a hit in low light though. It interfaces nicely with my 4 year old Panasonic Plasma TV through the HDMI cable. It's easier to manage files through the TV than the computer. The AVCHD files the camcorder creates take serious computer horsepower to process and Windows Movie Maker (ver 2.6 for XP) doesn't recognize them. I do like that it is ready to shoot video the instant you open the viewscreen. I think I got a good camcorder for a good price.

I use this camcorder regularly esp. when traveling, attending sports events & when making home videos. I love its' awesome zoom 42*!!!! especially in such a compact size. But i find the interface very complicated to get around. For example it would be easier if you could view all your media together, and then see your pictures &/or videos seperatly if you wanted to. Somebody should take a look at sony camera interfaces. Anyways hope this helps!!!

I used to make movies in Super 8, may years ago. So I take cinematography seriously. Thought I would give digital a try with a basic camera but in HD. Picture resolution, quality and color reproduction is incredible. Have downloaded some test shots to my laptop and watched them there. I have not tried editing of combining shots, yet, still playing with camera. Camera is tiny and light, too small and featherweight for my paws. So I purchased a $6 Polaroid mini tripod stand which I screw into the tripod mount and it gives me added weeight, a sturdier grip when filming. I like the camera
