Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V Digital Camera (Black) is a compact camera loaded with professional-quality features guaranteed to bring passion to your photography: a 16.2MP high-resolution back-illuminated CMOS sensor for improved low-light sensitivity, increased speed, reduced grain and augmented image clarity, and a 16x wide-angle 24-384mm (equivalent in 35mm format) super zoom lens. You can capture up to 10 frames per second at full resolution, too.
Dazzling full 1920 x 1080 HD video makes possible crystal-clear movies with stereo sound. The 3" LCD monitor has 921,000 dots of resolution. Optical SteadyShot image stabilization keeps the blurry pictures away when using the telephoto range of the lens, or in dim lighting situations, and hi-speed linear focus keeps pace with whatever you're shooting, no matter how fast-moving. A background defocus function gives you the look of professional portraits, with the subject in tack-sharp focus and the background way out of focus, and backlight correction HDR keeps high-contrast situations under control by automatically combining 3 photos at different exposures and combining them for one photo with correct tonal range. 3D still image and 3D Sweep Panorama let you view the world in new ways.
Friends and family will love how they look in your photos when you use the Face Detection, Smile Shutter, Anti-blink, and Soft Skin functions to show people at their best. And when you just want a point-and-shoot camera with no fuss, no muss, the Superior Auto mode has you covered--just press the shutter button and the HX9V takes care producing the best photo possible.

This is a good camera for someone looking for one of the most versatile devices around. This camera offers long focal length, lots of tech features, great video, and strong low light performance. This is a camera for all ocassions; and as a jack of all trades, it's master of none. It's good at many things, but if you are interested in one particular feature, there's probably a better alternative.
That said, the Sony (and close competitors, like the Nikon 9100 or the Canon SX230) is very convenient. Fits in your pocket, 24-384mm, HD video, and, finally, OK low light shooting.
The Sony stands out from the aforementioned competitors mostly because of its feature set. It has some smart options: the panorama mode is brilliant, the video good enough to replace a camcorder, and some clever tricks that use the bracketing and fast shooting, like handheld nightshot (high iso bracketing to reduce noise) or background defocus (combining in- and out of focus images for a shallow depth of field effect). Lots of things to play with, and much of it accessible enough to make sure you actually will.
Although I think the Sony is the best compact superzoom around now, the Canon SX230 and Nikon 9100 are also very good. The Canon has excellent image quality and full manual controls, but less features, a very annoying flash, and terrible battery life. The Nikon has great auto performance, but video is not great and there are no manual controls. Since these cameras are all about compromise, it's a good idea to look at these three top contenders and see what's good for you.
For the Sony, here's the main pros and consL
PROS
* Great features
* Excellent video (enough to replace a camcorder)
* Nice build and design
* Useful focal range, with strong macro and image stabilization to let you use it all
* Quick Autofocus at all focal lengths
* Good low light performance - good up to ISO 800. (Of course, no match for an SLR)
* Good battery life (for me, a decider compared to the Canon)
* Good screen
CONS:
* No shutter/ aperture priority mode (there is a manual mode with access to both, though the camera actually has no variable aperture, but a N/D filter)
* Some ergonomics issues - buttons that lag a little or are hard to press, awkward button assignments.
* no flash power setting - awkward, because the flash overexposes!
* Battery charges in-camera. An external charger can be bought separately.
* Connects to computer through proprietary USB cable
* Aggressive noise reduction and compression - Canon has significantly better image quality.
* Indoor white balance can be iffy on auto

(few) LIKES:
- Cool panoramic shots
- Nice zoom range (macro isn't that good)
- GPS (don't care)
- 3D photos (what for?)
- HD filming (nice feature but weird video format)
(great) DISLIKES:
- Lots of ergonomic issues (you can deal with it after some time but can't say you'll stay comfortable)
- Flash frequently overexposes (no flash setting)
- NO external battery charger (charges in-camera only)
- TOP DISLIKE >> Poor image processing! Preview image looks awesome, so crispy and beautiful colours! Download it to your computer and forget that quality, unless you Photoshop it.
BOTTOMLINE: Image quality is the most basic feature you can expect of a camera but Sony DSC-HX9V lacks of it!
My camera is now on sale, so I can get a decent one.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V Digital Camera (Black):
This camera simply takes great quality photos. All I ever ask of a camera is to have high quality photos. I will suffer from lack of features to get a good pic. With this little Sony I don't have to sacrifice either. The panorama feature is excellent as well. The flash does pop up in a terribly awkward spot but I am a one hand picture taking guy so this is not a problem for me.

The picture quality is great.
Only fare quality at night, but quality is not bad considering its price.
I gave it as a present for someone I love and she liked alot.

The smart auto is a very good feature. I almost always use this mode, because choosing the other scene modes is too long in the menu. Picture quality is good in low light indoor scenes. Great zoom and stabilizer. The flash is positioned where I naturally put my left index, so sometimes it gets stuck. I had to adjust my way of handing the camera.

If I can get great pictures anyone can with this exceptional camera.
I'm an old man (over 70) and not very tech-savy. And my friends cannot believe the fantastic pictures that I took with my new camera.
It's fast and does everything on its own. And I am told that there are some great manual options - I'll wait for my next lifetime to try them!

Honestly, I was not thrilled with this camera. It was slow to focus and shoot indoors which was the only time I used it. After I saw the images, I wasn't impressed. Also, the flash is positioned in a way that your hand will interfere with it popping up. I returned it the next day and exchanged it for a Nikon P310. MUCH better camera!

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V Digital Camera (Black):
I bought this camera at the end of 2011 and love it. It is my first digital camera after using film cameras for 30 years. Switching from film to digital was a breeze with this camera (and I'm coming from a Nikon). The functions are easy to figure out, and the screen is bright and sharp. The images are stellar on my computer screen as well. It is light, and powerful for its size. The zoom has good range, but image will be shaky at the tightest end of the telephoto if you don't have a tripod. I had a little difficulty getting autofocus to work on very close up shots. Overall, I am very impressed with the features and quality of this little camera. I have not yet tried the video.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V Digital Camera (Black):
BEFORE purchasing, I thought this would be a great point-and-shoot camera, by the specifications - quick (low) shutter lag, wide-angle (24mm) lens, 16x optical zoom, HDR, panorama, 3D, GPS, and more.
AFTER using this camera, I absolutely love the video quality, and that is what made the difference when purchasing over a Canon point-and-shoot, the 1080p (progressive) at 60fps! The video is awesome!
Would I buy it again? Yes, the video is that good. However, there are things I do not like, e.g., how the pop-up flash is sometimes covered by the fingers of the left hand, particularly if I ask someone to take a photo for/of me, and, due to the number of features, the complexity increases while the simplicity decreases.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V Digital Camera (Black):
This camera is great. I owned an older 7 megapixel Sony point and shoot for the last several years and it finally died recently... I cannot believe how much better these cameras have gotten. The large optical zoom is very handy and the image quality and video quality are outstanding. The low-light shooting has greatly improved also, although the flash still makes the pictures look hokey, I can shoot indoors now in low light and the photos look good where in the past the camera was pretty much unusable inside the house.

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V Digital Camera (Black):
Have had this camera for 3-4 weeks. I bought it as a pocket camera to be used on my travel. I have several DSLR cameras for more professional photography. However, I travel extensively and like to always have a camera ready. I have had the Canon G9, G10 and G12. In comparison the camera is smaller (easier to have in your pocket) and it has a wider range zoom. The aperture opening is OK for everyday use, but has a fairly large depth of field of view.
The face detection is very good. And so is indoor focussing in mixed lighting. Great overall camera. The GPS is slow to lock on to satellites specially when you travel extended distances.
The on-off switch is on top of the camera and can turn it on by accident. So be aware that you could use the battery by accident.
I would recommend it to travelers that need a compact point and shoot camera

Comments about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V Digital Camera (Black):
I bought this camera not just for stills, but for the video quality. In many places that I travel, a smaller camera is more *welcome* than a larger DSLR or dedicated video camera. For me, besides great video quality, equally important is Sony's optical stabilyzing which works very, very well. As most places no longer allow tripods *or* a balanced, "Glidecam or Steadicam-style" stabilizer, the Sony does an adequate, sometimes superb job of compensating for camera movement.
As for stills, yes, I think Sony's too-agressive noise reduction creates a problem for printing, however, for web-based posts or use in video editing, this little camera takes adequate, sometimes great shots depending on the quality, and amount of light.
So, along with my Canon T2i DSLR, and this camera, I'm all set for continuing to travel the world.
Definitely recommended and a nice step-up in additional features *and* refinements compared to the DSC-HX5V it replaces. Also, much appreciate the higher resolution LCD screen.

I purchasesd the camera primarliy to have with me when I am out with my 6 and 4 yr old. It fits in a pocket reasonably well and powers up to take a shot quickly. I teamed it with a Sandisk Extreme Pro card and highly recommend that as well. When shooting the lag between shot is virtually gone as the card records so quickly. I am happy with the quality of the shots I have taken - very nice in good naturaly light - the flash is fine for basic indoor shots. I have not shot any low light yet.
Overall there is not much to complain about for +/- $300 area.
I agree with most of the reviewers on line. There are a ton of features in the camera and I have not begun to explore its more creative side.
