Buffalo 1TB MiniStation Stealth USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive
The Buffalo 1TB MiniStation Stealth USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive is as mobile as any laptop or netbook. It's palmable, light and powered by USB. There's no need for an AC wall socket or power cord. It's great for storing files you need to take out on the road and a simple USB connection is all that is required to store files and get power to the device. Once connected properly, a blue LED will glow, notifying that it's ready to go.
The MiniStation Stealth features Buffalo Tools, which adds protection and convenience to the file storage process. The Backup Utility software can do automatic backup and restore of files. It can also be used to backup multiple computers with a single drive. The TurboPC uses highspeed RAM from your PC to boost the transfer rates up to 2x the normal USB speed. ECO Manager regulates power to conserve energy and SecureLock gives you password protection and software data encryption. The RAMDISK allows you to generate a RAM disk on your Windows PC, which creates a fast environment where you can work on files. The Buffalo Tools combined with the MiniStation Stealth's portability, makes it a very convenient external hard drive for portable applications.

- This is a simple utility that allows you to create a RAM disk on your Windows PC. The RAM in a PC is considerably faster than its hard drive, and by using spare PC RAM to create a RAM disk, you can give your computer a small but extremely fast environment to work on files in. When you have finished working on files from the RAM disk, simply save them to your PC's hard drive or an external hard drive for long-term retention. RAMDISK can be configured to automatically save the contents of the RAM disk to a hard drive during a Windows shutdown

- SecureLock software provides complete control of the data encryption on your Buffalo external hard drive. SecureLock is used to set passwords and prompt users for access to encrypted data on MiniStation Stealth hardware based encryption models

I am using this drive to back up a laptop with two partitions with different operating systems. I opted not to use the included backup software because it could not back up both partitions in one go. It was easy to uninstall the included software and set up my own, which works great with this drive. One caution if you use the installed software... there are additional programs that you may or may not want. I would advise researching them before installing.
This is a really small drive, and fast enough for my needs. It's light, which is good while I'm traveling, and I have peace of mind that my files are backed up.
The price was good for all these features, and B&H service is excellent as always.

For backup purposes, I regularly image the hard drives on my computers. If I ever have a catastrophic failure, it yields a much faster method of recovery vs. re-installing operating systems, re-installing software, and copying data. The drawback of imaging is that it can use up a lot of storage space. I was using a desktop external drive for awhile, but decided that I wanted to keep my backups more secure in a fireproof safe. However, because of bulky size and because of the need for a separate power cord, the desktop external drive was no longer suitable.
With its 1TB capacity, this drive fills the bill. It's small size makes it easy to handle and put away. I considered other portable drives, but chose this one because it uses the ubiquitous mini-B connector. Because so many smaller devices use this connector, I can keep of a single mini-B cable connected to my computer at all times for multiple devices. Other portable drives I found used flimsier "micro" connectors or the connector for USB 3.0 (which has no benefit for me).
The USB connector is on the corner, which makes it somewhat easier to connect the cable. The cable itself is only about 12 inches long, which may be too short for some. I plug mine into the USB connector on my monitor, so the short length is actually nice and tidy for me. Any cable with a mini-B connector should work.
With its glossy finish, the case is prone to fingerprints and smudges. Slightly more substantial "feet" might be nice, but not a deal breaker. The light might also be intrusively bright for some.
One thing I don't like is the light remains illuminated after using the "Safely remove hardware" function within Windows, so I don't know when the disks have finished spinning down before removing the cable.

If you need portable storage that's super-easy to use - just buy it! Doesn't even need a wall-wart. Power comes from USB 2.0 port!
Blue indicator light is great to know it's working because it is very quiet.
As a side note, Buffalo has just introduced a USB 3.0 version. Get one of them, too!
