The Mace DIY CCTV 4-channel DVR with 500 GB & 4 Camera System Kit includes a 4-channel network DVR with built-in SATA hard disk drive (500 GB), 4 Indoor/Outdoor Color IR Night Vision Bullet Cameras, camera power supplies, and 100' (30m) video cables for greater distance without signal loss.
With H.264 video compression technology, the 4-channel Network DVR can continuously record live video for up to 30 days, enhancing the hard drive capacity and reducing the network bandwidth for real-time video streaming. The VGA port allows you to connect a PC monitor or TV display while the local on-screen control with easy-to-navigate menus enables programming using USB mouse, IR remote control, or front panel.
Using MS Windows IE browser from your PC or laptop, the DVR can be network connected for remote internet system management and video monitoring. The video recorder allows remote camera viewing over GPRS/CDMA/3G/EDGE mobile phone networks from supported smartphones. It records events by alarm sensor or motion detection and also supports e-mail notification with JPEG snapshot for alarm triggered events. Other features of the DVR include monitoring live video, recording, searching, playback, and backup security video events.
The IR Bullet Camera, with a 1/3" CCD imager and a 3.6mm lens, delivers clear images at a resolution up to 420 TVL. With 18 IR LEDs, the camera can offer evenly-distributed night vision for up to 50' (15m). A minimum illumination of 0 lux makes the camera suitable for both day and night conditions. The weather-resistant camera is IP66-rated and can be used in both indoor/outdoor environments.

Used in small hardware store, covered the aisles and front door. Four cameras are ideal, the DVR is pretty easy to search. We transferred files showing theft onto a USB stick, and handed it right to the police. Also, the file cannot be edited, so it can be used in court, which was a bonus since we didn't know that prior to purchasing. The only drawback was that we had to call B&H to find out how to transfer the file onto the USB stick.

I bought this for use in my home. I am techie so I thought this DIY kit would be perfect. After I unpacked it, my initial impression was that the cameras felt well built, but that the DVR was built on the cheap. I thought I should just connect everything in the floor before I actually ran wires in my attic. I connect the cameras via the supplied cables and plugged in the power. The DVR came on, but was useless without a monitor. So, I went to buy the cheapest monitor I could find since it would be in the closet with the DVR and rarely used. When I got home 30 minutes later, my house smelled odd. One of the camera cables was BURNING UP! Too hot to even hold! A multimeter showed the cable had a direct short in the power side! If I had not come home when I did, it likley would have burned down the house! Not Joking. I discovered it was a faulty end, so I cut it off with the intention of soldering the connection during the install. With that sorted out, the install went smooth. It was easy to get the box connected, and recording. The manual was not much help. English is not its original language. Somethings are off in the translation. The DVR menus are the same. Some of the wording is odd. The next challenge was accessing it via the internet. Really, it went smooth. Only draw backs is that it uses Active X so I had to use IE (I prefer Chrome) and had to convince IE to run the unsigned Active X. It says you can record video to the monitoring computer, but when I try it fails. May be a Win7 issue. Next thing I wanted was to see video on my Blackberry. Took some work. The software in the box was worthless. But, downloaded new versions from [@]. There are no directions. So, you have to figure it out on your own. I did a lot of Google searches and after 4 hours, was able to get the video on my phone. The BB app is a little buggy. I have not yet connected it to my alarm system, but plan to. Would be cool to have my alarm system show a trouble signal if a camera comes off line or HDD fails. The biggest weakness as I can tell is that the system seems unpolished. It does what it says, but you really have to earn it. I have not yet tried to copy a vid from the DVR to a thumbdrive. The best part about it, is that for under $600, I have a 4 camera vid system that I can remote view on my phone and computer. Too bad it wasn't easier. Oh, and too bad it tried to burn down my house. That would have been bad if I had not found the defective cable before installation in my attic. The only reason I wouldn't recommend this to a friend is because I would spend the next week trying to get it to work!

Comments about Mace DIY CCTV 4-channel DVR with 500 GB & 4 Camera System Kit:
This system has been working very reliably for over a year now. It helps you know how many thieves there are and what clothing they were wearing, but not good enough details of who they are. If you mount the camera at any safe height (10 feet) so to be away from casual vandalism, its too far away from most faces to show enough face detail. The camera itself is fine, it is the DVR's recording capability that is low res (240 x 300 something). I am still happy to have this though and will keep it as extra set of eyes, even after I get a hi-def system.
Thanks Mace

I am using this on my house, as we have had some crime happening around the neighborhood.
So far so good. The only down fall is this system does not have sound.
But once cameras are set and cable ran everything works good. DVR is pretty easy to set up, just take some time playing with.
