You'll never have to leave Panasonic's Lumix DMC-TS3 Digital Camera (Orange) behind for fear you'll break it--it's built to survive a drop of 6.6' (2 m), it's waterproof to 40' (12 m), dustproof, and freezeproof to 14°F (-10°C)--as close to indestructible as a compact digital camera gets. And the TS3 is your best travel companion: it has built-in GPS that geo-tags your pictures with the Country/Region/Town where they were taken, as well as a compass, an altimeter, a barometer, and a world clock that will automatically set itself to local time!
But it's what's inside the TS3 that makes it worth saving: 12.1MP of resolution, a 4.6x Leica wide-angle 28-128mm (35mm equivalent) lens, full 1920 x 1080 HD video, and a bright 2.7" LCD monitor with 230K-dot resolution. Sonic AF gives you very fast autofocus, and the shutter lag is one of the shortest among compact digital cameras. It has Power O.I.S. image stabilization plus a Motion Deblur function, so you never have to look at another blurry photo. Face Detection and Recognition modes give you great photos of people by optimizing exposure and focus for faces, and Intelligent Resolution guarantees image quality even using high ISO sensitivity (up to 6400).
8 color modes help you tweak pictures creatively and a variety of Scene modes (for photos and movies) maximize every image for you. You can share any picture or movie you shoot by uploading to sites such as Facebook or YouTube, using the included easy-to-use Lumix Image Uploader.

keep this in my pocket for quick shots/video while doing biological fieldwork. has so far taken a beating on a couple big trips and seems to handle fine. video and photos come out sharp both under and above the water. My experience before-hand was with the olympus "tough" cameras - loved the older models of those, but the newest model I've tried has a frustratingly slow shutter response - not the case with the lumix. Few nit-picky drawbacks - as far as I can tell it doesn't charge off the USB plug - a pain for me as on some trips I rely on solar to recharge. On the other hand, battery life was very good - even keeping the gps mode on...went 4-5 days whereas my older olympus tough model would usually only last 2-3. Doesn't seem to handle low-light, no flash shots as well as the olympus - but wouldn't really expect too much with a little camera like this. Also the EV compensation is weird. Rather than actually shift the exposure (I find shots on these little cameras come out better a tad under-exposed) it applies incrementally darker layers of grey over the photo...very strange and doesn't produce the desired effect at all. There are also a whole bunch of useless "scene" settings which some people might enjoy. But beyond that its a fun camera - takes good macro shots and the 6x zoom gives a bit more flexibility over comparable models. I have yet to really test the image stability functions in the movie mode.

It was my all-purpose camera for Amazon & Galapagos trip. Have some very good photos. Lens fogged sometimes in high humidity - waited and it cleared. Intelligent Auto setting very easy and handled lighting well; Beach & Snorkeling worked for bright sun & lower light underwater, Scene Mode - many useful setting, e.g., beautiful sunsets, photo from airplane window. Fish often not close enough using 4.8 zoom during snorkeling - however, stabilizer helped keep steady holding camera at arms length & clicked away. Action usually was captured - fast shutter speed and fast processing of photo file allowed multiple photos quickly.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 Digital Camera (Orange):
This camera is like a one-stop shop for photos and videos -- on dry ground and under water.
We've stopped bringing anything else on vacation knowing that this product will be able handle anything on the run. Whether it's in the pool, down a water park slide, or in the restaurant that night, this is the camera to use.
The photo and video quality have impressed everyone we've shown.
If though, you're comparing this to a digital SLR, you would be disappointed with the kinds of response time you'd experience with that level of camera. So, be realistic in your expectations of response time.
I would recommend, though, that you find a complementary product that ensures that the camera doesn't drop to the bottom of the lake or in deep sea. It's been a great additional investment.

Bought for a beach holiday. Nice to have something that can handle some abuse AND snorkeling in the sea... not sure the newer TS is worth the extra over this.

We use this to photograph critters underwater in creeks and it works great! The macro is amazing. It is very fast. Motion pictures underwater can be a bit blurry.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 Digital Camera (Orange):
The TS-3 is a descent point and shoot camera. It is fairly easy to use with an intuitive menu. The brief explanation of each feature on the menu is also helpful. Picture quality and auto focus leave something to be desired. 1/3 of what I paid was for the point and shoot abilities, the other 2/3 was for the waterproof case. I did not use the TS-3 underwater out of fear that it may further hinder overall picture quality. This is a fun, rugged, easy to use, multi-purpose camera. However, if you are planning to capture once in lifetime moments, use another platform.

I own a land surveying firm and perform a lot of ALTA and As-built surveys which tend to be location intensive. I bought this camera for 1 of my field crews who liked it so much I bought 3 more. The cameras take great pics and it is worth its weight in gold to be able to tell where the photo was taken, at what time, and which direction the photo is pointing. I highly recommend this camera to anyone needed a rugged body that takes great geo referenced photos.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 Digital Camera (Orange):
Bought this camera before leaving on a beach vacation in Mexico. Took it out of the box and headed out without even reading the manual. Very easy to figure out. Tons of preprogrammed picture modes though the automatic one works very well.
It took great pictures above and below the water. Great shots in bright sunlight as well. Very vivid color reproduction. Least shutter lag of any point and shoot camera I've used. There's also a burst mode that ensures you never have to miss a photograph.
Things to take note. No view finder - so composing a picture in bright sun is sometimes hard. Low light performance isn't bad, but it isn't anything to write home about either. Though it's more than adequate for most night time shooting.
Very good picture quality at low zoom. The zoom is all digital so it's fairly limited (I believe 4x and you'll notice the degraded quality). On the flip side, because there's no moving parts on the zoom, sand can't get in there and gum up the works (that's killed my last 3 waterproof cameras). The lens is always exposed so I could see that it could get scratched but we didn't have any problem with this.
As with all amphibious cameras, you need to wipe the lens after you take it out of the water to ensure there's no drops on the lens that would affect the picture. Also because there's no lens cover, fingers with suntan lotion need to be kept away.
Battery life lasted all day with up to 500 shots with 25-35% of them using flash.
Overall a great camera. I'd have to think really hard about taking a SLR on another vacation in the future. Looking forward to using it around town as well.

I had a friend that bought the same camera tell me how cool taking underwater pictures was with the camera and decided to buy my own. My friend had to return her camera for an issue with it and when I got mine was a little concerned. I used mine twice and had water leak into it somehow. Was dissappointed when this happened and called to return it. The return was very easy and I recieved my new camera within the week. I have been using it to take pictures in a pool and it is great. No other issue with the new camera.

I bought a TS3 last month and untill now I'm guite happy about the choice. I bought it especially for underwater films, but untill now I did not have the opportunity of trying it... in Europe is still spring.
Pro - nice pictures, point and shoot quite reliable
Cons - slow start, mic placed in a position where I usualy place my index finger, so the first videos are with no sound.

This camera leaked and failed as soon as it hit the water.
Panasonic claims that it's my fault that their "waterproof" camera leaked INSTANTLY. I've had other waterproof cameras. I read their instructions.
Anyway, they refuse to replace it or repair it.

I purchased this camera for a trip to the British Virgin Islands. My current Pentax only goes toy 10 get underwater - this camera goes to 40 feet. Getting ready for the trip I have shot a variety of photos and am most impress by the macro ability this unit provides. As to the other shots it is very god in quality and ease of use.
The one thing I am still sorting out is the GPS marking feature.
If you are looking for a durable camera that will stand-up to white water rafting, skiing, and diving - consider this on.

I had a trip to Asia (Boracay, Philippines) and used this powerful camera. Loved the underwater scene. I'm a diver and got a lot of underwater photos. Colors of the corals and fishes were fantastic, and they are very clear!
Oh by the way, i used this camera to take a photo of the fire dance. That means taking photos on a very low light scene and pictures are still very clear and even captured the light flow of the fire! amazing!
love love love this camera.

This camera was the perfect camera for our ski trip. It functioned properly every time and was very quick to start up. It took great shots, both landscapes, and action. Off the slopes I started looking at all of the features and modes it has and I am quite impressed. I didn't buy it for all of those other modes, but I'm sure glad it has them!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 Digital Camera (Orange):
Purchased this camera just prior to 2 week trip to Australia. Wanted this camera more for dust-proof purposes than waterproof (not planning on using underwater). Camera performed very well on trip - took over 1700 photos and over 30 minutes of video.
Key Likes:
- lightweight, easy to carry
- takes excellent quality photos and videos, even in low light conditions (but see dislikes)
- very surprised at how strong and effective flash worked for pocket camera; solid performance out to 12-15 feet
- relatively quick start-up, and quick shot-to-shot performance
- like the amount of options and customization available (but see dislikes)
Key Dislikes
- auto-focus was sometimes confused; had trouble focusing in some low-light conditions, macro conditions, or when shooting through windows
- areas to grip on camera are OK, but not great. Hard to hold without sometimes bumping buttons on back during use, or when hands were damp. Would help to have slightly larger grippy surface on rear of camera
- exposure is generally good, but adjusting stops in 1/3 increments did not seem to have any effect. Tends towards under-exposure in low light conditions without flash
- battery life is OK, but not terrific. If shooting outdoors, could get full day of use, but if you take any flash photos, you will need spare battery. Battery seemed to last about 150-250 photos, depending on flash usage.
- menu structure is OK, but not great; expect to do some hunting to find advanced functions.
Overall, very pleased with camera - provides great photos in compact package.
