Superb for use with programs like Final Cut Studio, Avid Xpress and Adobe Premiere, the 6TB G-RAID External Dual Hard Drive Array from G-Technology is an external RAID that has the fast throughput and deep storage capacity to handle the rigors of post-production video work. This drive features two 7200 rpm SATA II drives striped together in a hardware RAID 0 configuration with a total of 6TB of storage. While you can connect the drive to a computer via eSATA, FireWire-800, FireWire-400 (via included adapter cable), or USB 2.0, you can optimize its data transfer speed via the eSATA interface. If connected here, you can transfer data at a rate of over 200 MB/s.
Because the drive boasts exceedingly fast transfer rates, it can play back multiple streams of high-definition video simultaneously, and in formats such as HDV, DVCPro HD, XDCAM HD, ProRes 422 and uncompressed SD. Although, if you would rather use the drive for applications less related to video, it will also perform perfectly for high-resolution imaging, data backup, or general storage applications.
Plus, if you ever decide 6TB of memory isn't enough, you have the option of scaling up. You can use the G-Tech 4-Port, PCIe x4 eSATA adapter (not included) or another company's adapter to connect more than one 6TB dual drive to your desktop. You can also connect more than one drive to your laptop or desktop via FireWire daisy-chaining or through a USB 2.0 hub.
The drive is housed in a compact aluminum external casing that features a thermo-regulated smart fan for cooling. While it will look right at home sitting on top of your Mac Pro or Windows workstation, it will more importantly keep your video and your workflow humming along.

The first G-RAID may have been damaged in shipping. When connected it made a loud squealing noise, so I returned it without any hassles.
The second one worked, and it is FAST. I have made a couple of exactly similar backups to a Lacie 4big Quadro and the G-RAID. The G-RAID is about twice as fast.
For video editing where I need quick access to files, this thing works like a champ.
It has a very very slight vibration as it spins up, but it is not so loud as to be heard if recording, certainly no louder than the Lacie external drives.
It this thing lasts I will be very pleased.
One point, if you use this for Windows and not MAC, make sure you initialize the drive using the USB cable, afterwards you can swith to eSATA. If you initialize using the eSATA cable, the drive is finicky when initializing, and you may not see all of the storage capacity.
Also buy yourself a longer eSATA cable to more easily position the drive away from the workspace. eSATA cables are inexpensive.

I have two 6Tb drives, both under a year old, one is the main and one is backup. The main is failing so I moved data (nearly 5Tb of quicktime files) over to the backup. Now the backup is failing too! I rely on these drives for business. Now moving everything over to a RaidBank5. I don't recommend these 6TB drives for anybody who values their assets.

I have countless G-RAIDs and G-Tech Hard Drives. I've only ever had one crash on me in 5 years. They're extremely reliable, and this one model is particularly good for giant raw movie files. But I still feel as though the product should be at least a hundred dollars less.

The cost of space is great these days, and I can't think of a better value than G-Tech's RAID drives. Great value for a durable product.

Working in video requires rapid speed in transfering data. The only challenge is the heat the drive creates, but I counter that with a desk top fan.

Works very well. Quiet. Fast. Will have to daisy chain 2 or 3 soon....LOTS of HD video to store and work with. I do wish that the instructions came with directions on how to RAID this thing...that was my only gripe. Or maybe, this isnt really a real RAID? Not sure yet. But 5 stars so far.

We use these for HD video editing (FC7/Premier Pro0 and after we bought several earlier models, have never looked back. All the originals are still working and as we've migrated from SD to HD video off of P2 cards, we have been pleased to see G-RAID come out with larger drives to accomodate the larger files.
On older G drives, the power supplies have sometimes needed replacing (easily done) and the company was very helpful (they don't make the power supplies, so they feel our pain). The fans can sometimes be a bit loud, but not obnoxiously so.
We plan to keep the ones we have and get more as our workflow expands and adapts--we love these workhorse drives!

Purchased this drive with the Sonnet PCIe card recommended by B&H - installed it turned it on and haven't stopped using it since. I will buy another soon.

Comments about G-Technology 6TB G-RAID External Dual Hard Drive Array:
My Lacie 4big Quadro just wasn't hacking it anymore. My daily backups were taking forever and my G-RAID was "waiting" constantly on the Lacie. So I bought my second G-RAID, this was specifically for backup.
These things are rock solid, very fast, you can easily stack them on top of each other.
One caution, they do not have the variety of inputs you recieve on the Lacie 4big Quadro, so make sure the G-RAID offers the inputs you require. Don't worry that they seem to promote themselves as a MAC platform, a very quick format and you are good to go on a Windows computer.

I have three 6TB G-Raid drives I use to back up file based video content. The e-sata connection makes transferring files in both environments very fast. I have never had any problems or failures. Just in case, having a three year warranty from G-Tech is a great safety net. I do hope the newer versions of this drive will support USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt...

I use this 6tb HD to work as a drive for my Itunes. I was looking for a solution to my Itunes dilemma, always upgrading to bigger storage. This item was suggested to me by a B&H consultant. Rather that move my Itunes again, I can add storage by adding another G-Raid giving me 12tb should I ever need it. I have not tried this yet. It was easy to install & simple to transfer my Itunes to the new drive. It is about twice the size of my 1.5tb Seagate. Personally the G-raid is a better looking drive as it is not black and does not collect dust and dirt like the Seagate It is a bit louder, although not enough to cause irritation or concern. Overall - Quality purchase.

I use this as an extrenal video drive with Adobe Preimre 5.0 and it is a beast.
Holds tons of high definition video and does not hang up with some of my most difficult projects.
I wish the e-sata connectors were more durable, this isn't a problem on this unit alone but all e-sata connectors.

Our company uses this hard drive for video production and it works in a flawless manner. The speed and reliability of the product are unmatched and we will definitely be purchasing more of these drives in the future. The only downside is the price but that can be expected with a hard drive that maintains such strong performance with a size of 6TB.

I love this drive I bought the older version of these drives 5 years ago which have been heavily used, moved and abused and they still work. That is why when I needed more space I knew this was the brand to get. Its worth every penny. Also if you do have a problem the company is great to deal with.
