I'm an artist and I have bought dozens of portable DVD players for "video walls" that I create with large-scale drawings embedded with DVD monitors. I have purchased every brand on the face of the earth, and I run them as much as 24 hours a day, day after day, for a month or more. What's the best player? Sony is, by far: the best image, the best durability, and the most options for full screen, excelled color and all menu choices. And the best deal I always get for photographic and video/digital equipment? B & H...of course!

I asked my husband for this portable SONY DVD player as a birthday present. I had looked at the reviews given and was pleased overall with the comments and of course, the SONY "brand" by and large speaks for itself.
It was my intention to use this player to view exercise DVD's and to view movies which I had intended to purchase. Also, since I have a large CD collection, it also suited my purpose to have the opportunity to listen to my CDs especially when I'm traveling.
Although I was initially pleased with the product which showed my DVDs wonderfully and played my CD's equally as well, what I found was that after purchasing this item during late September 2011, and perhaps using it approximately 3-4 times a week for no more than 8-10 hours weekly, suddenly in mid-December 2011, the DVD completely stopped playing. This was surprising to me since I recall quite clearly that the last time I had used the player was to listen to one solitary CD which could have been no more than 60-75 minutes in length.
The error message that I received was that the disk could not be read. While I initially thought that this might be the case for the the CDs only, unfortunately this was also true for the DVDs as well. I just couldn't imagine what happened to the unit.
Fortunately for the 2-year replacement contract which I also purchased, the 3rd party vendor has stated that upon my returning the entire package with all the contents back to them, I'll receive a check for my purchase price plus the taxes.
So upon receipt of my check I will return back to B & H to make another portable DVD purchase again, however I will forego the SONY product line and choose another brand.

Comments about Sony DVP-FX970 9" Portable DVD Player:
We've had this DVD player for about 2 weeks. Our primary reason for buying it was to help keep our 2-year old daughter entertained while flying and on long trips in the car. So far, it's great. The picture is superb, it's nice and light, and the battery lasts for as long as we need it. I'll update a few months from now after we've had time to really use it.

I purchased this to play dvd's while riding my indoor bike. Very clear picture, enough volume, easy to use, and best of all, it starts to play where I ended the time before. Love the portability!

Comments about Sony DVP-FX970 9" Portable DVD Player:
I have used the player on trips for the kids and it works wonderfully with the included car adapter or battery power. Also use on the treadmill for video or mp3s to cut down on boredom and in the bedroom where there is no TV. I find it handy to watch a video impromtu that I can carry outside, to other rooms, etc. without cranking up the TV and DVD player. Battery life is also good and the swivel screen is very handy. Works with my camera, too.
I wish it supported more video and picture formats and codecs - but the same can be said for most players. Only supports mp4 simple profile (low res) and jpg (size is limited). But free software can convert videos and pics, if needed, and most cameras can save in jpg (but you may have to resize if you have a high res camera). So, it is not for someone expecting to throw any video or pic at it (but DVD's work great). Perhaps someday the truly universal player will be made at a reasonable price. Sound is not particulary loud if there is background noise. Also would like a card reader.
Overall, the player meets most of my needs as a DVD and mp3 player and I am very satisfied with it. Resolution is fine but don't expect 720p! If more formats were supported, I would have given 5* overall. But it is 5* for its primary DVD/MP3 purpose.

I am an amateur nature/wildlife videographer. I use this DVD player as a monitor while taking video.
This is my second Sony DVD player, it is replacing the Sony 8" DVP-FX820 which finally died after much abuse being taken into the woods over the past 5 years. This player has one of the highest resolution, (800 x 430), of all the portable players but the blue-rays.
When I'm out in the woods in my blind waiting for an animal to show up I can watch a video with ear phones and when something shows I just push a button and switch the player back to the camera. Its high resolution is what I use to help focus the camera.

I can sat this on the dining room table and feed my grandaughter in her highchair and she'll watch spongebob and eat without playing with her food or wanting to get down. Also the quality and picture are beyond compare. Haven't tested the battery life yet as I just plug it in at the table. But so far I give two thumbs up to Sony and the dvp.

We use this on long car rides to visit relatives. It works well and is easy for my young children to navigate. I no longer have to sit next to them in the back to figure out the DVD player. We have had ours for 6 months with no issues. I also used it to connect to a hotel TV to watch a movie I brought and it had a very good picture.

I use the player to watch movies in bed.
Great things:
the six hour battery life is an advantage, the screen quality is excellent, the Display function is helpful, and the remote control is nice.
Not so great things: the Power On/Off switch is not too easy to use.
