The G73Sw-A1 17.3" Notebook Computer from ASUS is a powerful 17.3" notebook computer, built to handle the intensive hardware demands that modern computer games place on a system. The computer's graphics engine is powered by the nVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M card, loaded with 1.5GB of GDDR5 video memory.
The computer is loaded with a Blu-ray drive. It is capable of playing HD movies from disc, either on the computer's 1080p display or an an HDTV via an HDMI connection. The drive can also read and write CDs and DVDs.
The system is powered by a 2GHz Intel i7-2630QM quad-core CPU which, coupled with the graphics card, can really push up frame rates in complex 3D video games. Thanks to Intel Turbo Boost Technology and the ASUS LevelUp function, you can overclock the system's CPU to up to 2.9GHz for enhanced performance.
Storage is handled by a hybrid storage system. The computer features two 500GB hard drives, each of which features an extra 4GB of SSD storage built-in. This improves performance, as the drives store frequently used files in the SSD portion of storage. The computer boasts 8GB of RAM, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and a 2MP webcam. A THX TruStudio sound system provides crisp and clear audio output for a true multimedia experience. Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) is the installed operating system.

I use this laptop for personal use, editing photos etc. It is so fast! I love the back lite keyboard. It's heavy - so not for use for a mobile laptop, but great for home.

This model is way beyond my needs, but its an excellent design for serious users. I'm not using it for gaming, only office work. I may use it for my AutoCAD work, it can easily handle it.
All the attachments were well thought out, they covered everything. Everyone I show it to are impressed.

Comments about ASUS G73Sw-A1 17.3" Notebook Computer (Black):
I use this system as a development environment for software and as a platform for doing my amateur "darkroom" work. In both instances the system meets or exceeds my requirements for performance and has supplanted my desktop as my primary system.
To do development work, and because it's a better O/S and windowing environment, I installed Kubuntu (Linux) as a dual boot system. I would have gotten rid of Windows but since I had to pay for it, I kept a copy installed. It took a lot of time and work getting rid of all the pre-installed bloatware by ASUS. I'll suspect I'll end up getting rid of Windows in the not too distant future anyway because I don't use it.
Kubuntu is working pretty well except for one minor hiccup involving the trackpad and keyboard. Occasionally whatever characters happen to be buffered are erroneously pasted into which ever app happens to have the focus and/or the cursor will jump around. I also see this in Windows (ASUS pure install) just not as frequently. This is the major flaw in this computer. Aside from some minor configuration for the backlighting of the keys Kubuntu is working very well. From my research, the next Kubuntu kernel release should solve the backlighting configuration issue. I have not tested the blu-ray part of the system nor the USB 3.0 port nor the cardreader as yet though Linux is recognizing them; everything else works fine.
I did remove one of the two drives and replace it with an Intel SSD. Experimenting with the two hybrid drives, I don't think I would have done this had I not had an extra SSD. I am storing all data on the hard drive as the SSD is only 80GB. I also got rid of the 20GB partition ASUS was using for system restore. Sorry ASUS, but I am not willing to give up all that disk space to store an O/S and other software that I didn't want in the first place.
It's too bad the bios doesn't support raid, or at least fake-raid, for booting. The two matched drives that come with this would make a nice RAID 0 or 1 system.
VirtualBox runs well.
I am angry I had to pay the Microsoft tax; Microsoft changed their EULA so it's up to the manufacturers if they want to reimburse those of us that don't need or want Windows on their system. All the manufacturers I researched, including ASUS, tell you to return the system if you refuse the MS EULA. The end result is, if you want a computer, you must pay MS.

I've had the machine about 2 weeks. I'm not a gamer but need a machine with lots of power and that will last me over time. I've never had a back-lit keyboard. I really like that. The screen, however, on this model is glossy. I didn't realize it so I've had to order an anti-glare matte screen protector. The webcam just flat out doesn't work, so I have to ship the machine out for warranty repair. They said to expect to be without it for about 2 weeks. I was spoiled by in home service on my last laptop, so I find losing the machine for 2 weeks, when I've only had it that long, to be very frustrating. If it weren't for that, I'd give it a 5 star.
I am VERY impressed with how quiet it is, how cool it runs and the speed. The keyboard is comfortable. It's heavy, but so was my previous 17" laptop so I'm not phased by that.

I bought this based on reviews and am extremely happy. I use it for Video Editing while away from my desktop. Truly it is VERY FAST (quad core I7 CPU). I uninstalled some of the bloatware (it doesn't have much though) and made my own Drive Image for backup. The Backup Software installed wanted to use 5-10 DVDs to do the drive image. It is a great computer and super price. The only bummer is that all of the RAM slots are filled so if you want to add RAM you have to replace the ones in it. Also, only two slots can be accessed from the bottom. Two slots are on the motherboard so in order to upgrade to 16GB of RAM you would have to remove the keyboard and get to the motherboard from the top. There is a video on YouTube and it looks like a Royal [*]. Actually, it performs great with 8GB of RAM so I'm not going to worry about it. Additionally, as others have noted, the battery life is less than "optimal". But, to have the extra power it is well worth the tradeoff. Lastly, the keyboard has a "funny" feel. It could be that I am just not used to it though.

I do video editing using pork. I have 6 separate sequences, each with 4 camera tracks in to its respective mutkicam sequences. Applied levels, three way color correction and processor amp to get the cameras looking alike. (Two 60ds, one T2i, one xha1) it cuts like nothing and plays back smooth. The laptop bag makes it easy to carry. I took it on a trip from Miami to dallas. Worked on the project while I was away. All in all it is an awesome powerhouse. Ill be upgrading ram to 16 gigs and eventually expanding the secondary hardrive to the highest available space when it becomes needed. Otherwise this one rocks as it is. I run the creative suite like if I was on a very high end desktop. Ultra quiet.

I'm a video editing hobbiest (not professional), and I use inexpensive software (Pinnacle Studio). I bought this laptop solely for that purpose. I've had it about two weeks, and it's been phenomenal. The laptop is big and heavy and solid and attractive. They keyboard layout will take a couple of days to get used to, but that's not a negative. I don't care for the fact that the harddrives are partioned into 4 x 250g. It's not too practical for me. But other than these minor points, it starts up and shuts down quickly, the handles editing 1920x1080 mp4 video without trouble, and the USB ports are all VERY fast. 90mb/sec to/from my WD Passport USB 3.0 drive. It prompts you to make system restore disks when you start it up for the first time. It took SIX DVD-Rs. Ridiculous! But that's because of Windows 7. In conclusion, rock solid, fast, no crashes, WiFi is pretty sensitive, sound quality is great for a laptop (it's got a subwoofer built in) and even running for hours with the CPU cranking away on HD MP4 files, no excess heat. I recommend the laptop, [...]

Fast, quiet and an excellent desktop replacement.
This is not a good laptop if you intend to tote it around with you, it's big and rugged. Yet portable if you need to take it to a new location to work or game on.
Just don't expect to take it with you on the train or to your local cafe to write your blog or check your email. This is meant for serious work or serious gaming when you need some horsepower large amounts of data around.
This is a revised chip set so doesn't have the call back problems from the earlier Sandy Bridge release.

This is mainly used for gaming. 1.5 GB V RAM is plenty for most games, with the exception of the Witcher 2. But I can't even run the game on max settings on my desktop, so it's ok.
What I really like is that it stays cool after hours of gaming, and pretty quiet throughout. The keyboard is comfortable and illuminated. The screen is of high quality.
Overall, this is a very well built gaming laptop.
