If you want the features and high quality image processing of a Blu-ray player in a portable package, the Sony BDP-SX1000 Portable Blu-ray Disc Player is a rewarding choice. You can enjoy Blu-ray and standard DVD movies on its 10" LCD screen in brilliant SVGA resolution. Weighing in at just under four pounds, its lightweight size makes it a great travelling companion.
Just because it's small doesn't mean it doesn't have the bells and whistles of a larger Blu-ray player. The BDP-SX1000 offers an Ethernet port so you can connect to an internet connection to take advantage of Blu-ray disc extras with BD Live. By downloading additional content from the internet, you can access interactive quizzes, games, even filmmaker chats related to the Blu-ray movie you're watching. It also supports BONUSVIEW, so you can see two sources simultaneously with one displayed in a smaller window.
It also plays CDs, CD-R and CD-RW so you can enjoy discs you burned yourself. If you have home movies shot with a camcorder and burned to a disc, you can play those too. Since it also has a USB port, you'll have even more options. That means you can connect a USB memory drive, memory card reader, digital camera or camcorder to the USB port to enjoy your photos, videos, and music.
If you have other Sony devices that have BRAVIA sync, you can enjoy streamlined control with just one remote. If you don't, your new BDP-SX1000 ships with its own fully functional remote.
Additional convenient features of the BDP-SX1000 include a Blu-ray disc and DVD parental control lock, a headphone jack out, and a car battery adapter for portable use. So whether you want to enjoy your collection of DVDs or take advantage of the online extras offered with your favorite Blu-ray movies, this multi-format disc player is a solid choice that can keep you entertained.

After reading all the online press releases, I was looking forward to purchasing this portable Blu-ray / DVD player from Sony. It certainly does what it should do. Below is a summary of my feedback:
Negatives:
-NO WIFI connectivity, just wired ethernet.
-I was also looking forward to watching Netflix on this, however, these internet features aren't available for this player yet. (Not sure it matters now because there is no WIFI).
-NO removable or replaceable battery, it is built in.
Positives:
-The screen is a matte finish, not glossy (I like either) but the matte finish prevents glare.
-Buttons on player are heat touch sensitive, pretty cool.
-Remote works great.
-Plays all blu-rays and DVD's that I have tried.
-Load disks pretty quickly.
-Has USB port. I have connected a 1 TB harddrive with a bunch of digital movies on it, it plays these MPG files perfectly. SWEET!
-Slick gloss case looks neat.
Overall I am pretty pleased with this Sony Products, just need to get past a few negatives.

You would think this being a new release player from Sony it would incorporate all the latest features that Blu-ray has to offer. Sadly it lacks two key features that are pretty much stock standard when it comes to BD these days.
Firstly the screen itself is not capable of 24Hz. If you set the machine up to output 24P via HDMI the in-built LCD will go black during playback at which point you are given the following error "24P cannot be displayed on the LCD screen". Hence, it's definitely not 24Hz capable.
Secondly the machine does not support Blu-ray 3D at all. I can understand that perhaps the in-built screen would not support the refresh rate but to prohibit 3D output via HDMI is just downright insulting. There's no technical reason for this limitation. Sony could address this with a firmware update but they have yet to do so.
Furthermore, the USB port does not support NTFS formatted drives meaning just about any HD file you can think of is also not supported by default (as they are generally larger than 4GB). Again, Sony's latest stand-alone players support NTFS so why this player doesn't is beyond me.
There's a lot to like about this player but one just can't look past the flaws.

This was a real life-saver when my husband had to spend 4 days in the hospital. He enjoyed watching his discs while in bed and out of bed. The size of the screen and ability to position it was a plus. The Sony quality is tops. It made his hospital stay actually tolerable. Easy to set up and use with the remote. Wonderful picture quality.

I bought this portable Blu-ray player so I could watch Blu-ray discs anywhere in the house, especially in our exercise room. We only have 2 Blu-ray players in the house and I found myself falling asleep at night when I'd watch a movie on the couch (typically the only time I can watch is when the kids go to bed). Now I can play a movie while I'm working out, with no worries of dozing off. The player runs and looks great, and the battery lasts as advertised. The speakers are awfully weak, but I bought it as a player for a TV, so I can live without the sound.

Comments about Sony BDP-SX1000 Portable Blu-ray Disc Player:
It's got a MATTE screen. That made me very angry especially because more and more average consumers who don't know anything about Video prefer matte, same way goes when you go to any grocery store or ice cream place, Strawberry or banana flavors have practically DISAPPEARED in America. Its either chocolate or vanilla, period.
Thanks to who? The big mass of Matte screen idiots who most definitely only like the sickening chocolate and vanilla flavor while the strawberry banana people like me and other professional videographers/editors and Videophiles like glossy screens.
Therefore manufacturers are probably avoiding portable units on glossy screens. I cannot find anymore a glossy player. thanks to my fast action, I bought 3 rare 27" glossy screens from B&H for my Mac pro while they still last. B&H used to have a Samsung portable Blu-Ray with a glossy player as I wanted to exchange and B&H discontinued.
Here is a bit of advice for the average Joe who likes matte. Glossy screens give the best color saturation and deep blacks, rather than a DULL and lifeless matte screen which also gives you glare, not as distinct as the glossy screen but it is there (that blurry shiny reflection) Jeezzz.
Change the lighting, close the shade, buy a screen hood if you have to but get glossy...

Plays Audio CD's
Hook up to the TV is fast and simple.
Sony has once again produced a great product.
Little pricey but worth it.

Comments about Sony BDP-SX1000 Portable Blu-ray Disc Player:
I bought this portable blue ray player primarily for its long battery life--5 hours.
It was easy to set up and I immediately connected it to my LAN and updated the firmware
It does achieve the 5 hour playback time
Minimal screnn glare
controls on player are heat sensitive and works great
The remote control is acceptable but wish it was more compact
i would recommend this device
