Got this just as it came out and very happy I did. I was looking for an integrated wifi blu-ray players under $200 and was homing in on a samsung unit, when I saw this Sony at the b&h store. Really great value for the buck - fast, full of web features such as youtube and netflix, wide connectivity options, video quality superb. It's also extremely thin & light.
Currently there isn't support for adding your own netflix movies to the queue, you have to do that from an external device. Also, it is so feature-packed that it might be a bit overwhelming to "casual" or non-technical users, but there is excellent 24h support from Sony.

I already had a blu-ray player that worked fine , but I wanted to upgrade to a model with wifi so I could watch movies via Netflix. First of all, it is extremely complicated to set up and register: you have to register online with sony, then register the player with netflix, all of which is not in the instruction manual. The wifi only worked twice and has never worked since even though it says it's connected. Also, the picture and sound quality are nowhere near as good as a blu-ray or even a regular DVD. Sure I can watch blu-rays but that was not the point. I am very disappointed with this product.

Got this on a great deal through B&H. I read all the reviews and liked what I saw regarding picture, but was worried about WiFi connectivity. Well, there was nothing to worry about. the player setup in under 10 mins, automatically did a software update, and streamed netflix flawlessly! Fantastic picture on blu ray and really good upscaling on standard DVDs (better than my former upscaling DVD player). I read that the remote seems cheap, but it seemed like every other remote to me. I have no complaints - great machine, greath price through B&H.

This is my second Sony blu-ray and it is much improved from the one I bought 3 years ago. Love the wi-fi which works great. Easy set-up. I want another one.

I use this on an old 13" Toshiba TV so I have something to watch as I exercise. Easy set-up and the Wifi works great, allowing me to choose from a variety of shows/stations. I do not have cable or satellite and this allows me to watch more than just news and commercials :). We like this so well, we are buying another one for our flat screen TV

This is my first Bluray Disc Player with internet connectivity, so the technology is a bit more advanced than previous models I have had. The only problem I had was getting connected to my airport express network. I finally gave up and connected it via cable. It works fine with the cable connected, but the wireless feature I paid extra for is now useless unless I change to a different kind of wireless network.
Comments about Sony BDP-S580 3D Blu-ray Disc Player (Black):
On my first try after set it up, I inserted my first blu ray DVD (brand-new Avatar out from the box),the player suddenly got frozen & stuck, not responding to remote control. I had to unplugged the power, replugged it,turned the power back on. It then responded to the remote control. Toward the end of movie playing, the movie screen became jumping & sound became intermittent.Plan to return.

Very small and light, so it needs to be placed somewhere secure where it won't be accidentally knocked. It gets very warm when running, so it should have good ventilation on both the top and bottom. It's wireless, but setting that up has been problematic. Regardless of what I do, I get an error message that it cannot connect to my internet service, but, if I skip the setup window, the system will connect to Hulu, Netflix, U-Tube, etc, and when I enter a URL, I get the appropriate webpage. Thus, I'm not entirely sure what the problem is. This does mean that the player cannot receive automatic firmware upgrades and I've had to download the files and create a disk on my computer to run in the player. Furthermore, I have noticed that the video streaming I get is choppy with lots of download breaks unless the player is right next to the wireless router. No problem playing disks, and the images are great, but I may be limited to that if I can't solve the wireless connection issue and improve the streaming quality. I'm thinking now I probably should have opted for a less expensive basic model and avoided the wireless headache.

We have been using this player more for internet streaming then DVD/Blue Ray playing and it has been working great. I love the ability to control via the HDMI cable so I can use the remote from my TV to control just about everything even without have to set the remote up for the Sony Blue Ray player.
One negative on streaming if you have a home DLNA server is it is much more limited on the format of files than those it can handle directly from a USB device. For example, it will not play .m4v files from a DLNA server but they are fine from a USB flash drive.

It was easy to set up and performs well. No complaints about the menus. I have it hardwired to modem so can't comment on WiFi.
I wasn't planning on going Blu-ray but am eager to try a Blu-ray disc to see if I can discern a difference from regular DVD.

We took the jump from DVD to BlueRay and this Sony works GREAT!!! I like the builtin wireless which was easy to setup and we were streaming videos & music 10 minutes after setup. The product is easy to use and the picture quality is awesome. The other great part is that the price here at B&H is the best out there!!!
Comments about Sony BDP-S580 3D Blu-ray Disc Player (Black):
Got this player to replace my original Roku box, which died recently. Set up was not too complicated - I did not have to open the manual. I use it mostly for blue ray movies and Netflix. Video quality for streaming is better compared to my old Roku, presumably because I've set the player output to match the native resolution of my TV. I also like the smaller and more informative display (which includes my real-time download speed). I have only one complaint - it takes about 30 sec to establish web connection with my wireless router when the device is first powered on (this might be the router problem, and Roku did not have this problem because it was always on). Overall - great product!

If you live in the UK this is the Bluray player for you! 1st, Buy a USA to UK step-down voltage converter (Tacima). 2nd, get this player from B&H [...].Right, back to the review of the Sony BDP-S580 3D Blu-ray Disc Player, which I've had for about three weeks now. Firstly this player is smooth, quiet and loads quickly,The Bluray picture quality is faultless for the price (40" Sony Bravia),but as of this moment I can't comment on the 3D performance (No 3D TV) check out other reviews for that,I did. With the internet connection you can update the software without any problems and about 70% of all other internet services works perfectly too(BBC iplayer youtube etc.)The player is small & light[...] I would recomend this player as a great buy.

This player has everything that one would want out of it -- easy playing of BD media, internet connection plus a host of available internet viewing services. We subscribed to hulu plus after getting this player and it's been nice to be able to get more current shows since we are planning on getting rid of our cable service. Also, DVDs look great in this player -- better than in our old DVD player in my opinion. My only criticism would be that services like Netflix and Hulu Plus need better interfaces for Sony players. Netflix one is terrible compared to the same service on a Wii -- you can only view your queue and not search or anything. Hulu Plus interface is also similarly wonky. An improvement in these areas would make me give a perfect score. It's still great value for your money!

This Blu-ray is one of the easiest to use. Setup was simple, straight forward. the build in WIFI is a plus however, I use the LAN port. There are many applications to choose from, most require accounts, some do not. The load time for movies is minimal and it lets you know when there is a firmware update needed. Cool use of the iPhone/iPad app for an alternate remote control.
Sony made good on this one!
BUY IT!!
