My wife needed a dedicated small point & shoot camera for concerts and various uses. I read a bunch of online reviews regarding ultra compacts and the feature set pushed me toward the 100 HS - highly effective pure auto, decent quasi-manual program options like really fast burst, tons of scenes and ultimately, highly rated low light shooting. Once I found out Canon made a high quality (albeit expensive, much more than the actual camera) waterproof case for it, I realized it could be used for the beach and pool with our boxer dog and more so I bought everything for her as a Christmas gift.
It's a very robust tiny camera. It feels sturdy and the materials used give the impression of high quality.
The large screen appears to be made of a high quality glass but just in case, I bought a ZAGG InvisibleSHIELD for it. B&H doesn't have the model-specific cut for this model. The universal sizes from ZAGG need to be trimmed to fit the in-between size screen of the 100 HS and the B&H sales person was not aware of a way for them to special order or drop ship it, so I sourced ZAGG P/N CANPSE100S from elsewhere. It fit perfectly.
The auto mode so far is pretty nice. It seems to hit the lighting sweet spot much better than some of the older Canon models I've had, such as the a570 IS. Everything else seems to work as advertised when playing around with program mode. I am glad it doesn't have some of the manual features that are in the higher price cameras - the feature selection is perfect for a well sorted point & shoot. Picture quality is exceptional; sure, some of the lower light images wouldn't be crisp if made into posters, but this camera seems to be able to save a lot of low light shots that other small cameras would destroy.
Battery life is impressive so far. I'm not thrilled with it having a proprietary battery pack but I understand the weight and space savings with such a thing.
The only real downside I've found so far, and it has prevented us from capturing some pretty cool moments, is the camera's propensity to highlight dust orbs in the air. The little flash is SO close to the firing angle of the lense that it will highlight floating debris in front of/near the lens pretty well. It's hit or miss - you just don't know for sure when it will happen, but when it does it can be pretty aggravating. This isn't necessarily the camera's fault since it is pretty hard with such space constraints to adjust the flash angle in the design but it can be disappointing. I was thinking that some sort of diffuser might help or the old fashioned pop up type of flash...I don't know, I'm not a Canon engineer. This seems to occur the most when you are in a confined area and there is activity stirring dust up. I still gave it five stars because, again, I don't see it being a problem with this specific camera but more of a problem with this category of ultra compact cameras.
Overall though, I highly recommend this camera. The singular real downside about highlighting orbs is something that most if not all cameras this size will have.
PS - I highly recommend the Canon PSC-2070 soft case for this camera. It fits perfectly and offers great protection when stored in a purse or anywhere the camera could incur scratches or debris.

As a filmmaker / videographer, I found this camera's specs to be inticing... shooting full 1080p HD video at 24 fps and around 34mbps, for only [$] ! Although the video images are stunning, it lacks any type of manual controls (shutter speed or exposure lock would have been great... especially knowing that Canon did have exposure lock on similar digicams... Too bad for this, the camera captures both great video and stills...

I started shopping for an "expensive" camera but the more I studied them the more I realized I would never use the dozens of features each had. It makes no difference how "good" a camera is, if it's not convenient to you use you don't take pictures. This little camera fits in your pocket and fires-up really qiuckly. Ready at a moments notice to take pics. It also has good battery life. I charged it only once in 11 days of traveling and picture taking.

The powershot 100 hs is a great compact point and shoot. For the price, it really delivers high quality photos and ample features. There are more expensive cameras in its category that are not as good.
I have only had it for 2 weeks and have not run into any problems.

Comments about Canon Powershot 100 HS Digital ELPH Camera (Gray):
The camera's small slim design makes it extremely portable. It's very easy to operate either in the auto mode or in one of its many special photo modes. But what distinguishes it from others is the quality of the photos it takes, especially in low light.
True, its buttons and controls are small for one with big hands and fingers. It doesn't have a lot of zoom, but enough for most photos. The flash is somewhat limited, but low light pictures are so good you seldom need it. Don't be put off by these minor complaints. You'll love this little camera.

This camera is not trying to be anything it's not. It's a fantastic little point and shoot for an equally reasonable price. It takes good pictures, has a variety of modes to choose from, is compact, quick and easy.
It has no viewfinder, but again, for such a quick camera, you shouldn't need to use a viewfinder. It's literally a point-shoot. If you're looking for a camera that will capture memories in great quality, rather than capture some fantastic artistic shot, then look no further... you may even be pleasantly surprised.

Very easy to use point and shoot with a lot of features. Was able to start shooting right out of the box. Takes great pics and the response time is fast for a point and shoot. Battery life with the rechargeable battery that came with it is also very good.

I bought this to replace my Canon Powershot SD 1100. I was very happy with the SD 1100 but I wanted HD video and the price was right for the 100 HS. My biggest concern was living without an optical viewfinder. This camera did not disapoint. I was able to still see the image on the screen in full sunlight. I am a professional photographer and I shoot with Nikon DSLRs but my point'n'shoots are always Canon. The features, quality and image quality in these Powershots are the best.

Had purchased a Cannon Elf 800 IS a few years ago. It still work great, but I wanted another lightweight slim camera to carry around in my diaper bag to be able to take shots and videos of the kiddo when needed and not have to worry about weight or expense. I haven't used it much, but the results so far are great. Like my 800IS, this one has a LARGE image display screen, easy to move function dial, and fun features. Perfect for all ages.
