Nikon's Coolpix S3100 Digital Camera (Silver) has everything you need in a compact camera, all beautifully contained in a stylish little pocketable package less than 1" thick, and weighing in at 4.2 oz (118 g). Start with a serious 14MP CCD sensor for great image quality, add a sharp 5x wide-angle Nikkor 26-130mm (equivalent in 35mm format) lens and a brilliant 2.7" LCD monitor with 230K-dot resolution.
The S3100 isn't just another pretty face, either--it's got one-touch 720p HD video, 4-way VR image stabilization to banish blurry pictures forever, sensitivity up to 3200 ISO that lets you keep shooting even when it gets dark, Subject Tracking Autofocus that locks onto a moving subject, keeping it in focus at all times, and a Macro mode that produces fantastic pictures by focusing as close as 4" from the lens.
The Smart Portrait System makes everybody you photograph look good, by automatically capturing a smile, warning you when someone blinks in a picture, automatically correcting red-eye and smoothing out wrinkles and blemishes on faces. There are 19 scene modes, including Pet Portrait, Night Landscape, Sports, Party/Indoor, Sunset, and lots more. This is a camera that's easy to live with, and will always treat you right.

I bought this camera as a point-and-shoot to use on a trip to South America to supplement prosumer gear. I liked the small size, which saved weight and bulk when image quality was not a priority (snapshots) and made it less conspicuous when walking with expensive gear would have attracted unwanted attention. I also liked the fact that I could charge the camera through the USB port of a laptop, removing the requirement to pack yet another charger. However, I found the image quality to be mediocre, especially with higher ISO settings. Sadly, half-way into my trip the camera died with a "lens error", requiring me to go back to using prosumer gear for all photography. I promptly sent the item back for a refund after returning from the trip.

Great budget friendly camera. Takes excellent shots, Menu system easy to use, but not quite as easy as prior Canons that I have owned. Amazing quality, features and pricepoint.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix S3100 Digital Camera (Silver):
I purchased the S3100 because of the megapixels and the price. I have used it to take quick pictures of my dogs. Its size is great because it easily fits in your pocket. I have noticed that the shutter seems to stick and if you are not paying attention, your picture has black on the top and bottom. This of course can be a problem. It has only happened a few times but it is annoying. Having said that for the money, I think it was [$] its not bad.

We have only had this camera for a few weeks and have not taken a variety of pictures, but so far we are very pleased. Love the compact size and ease of use. Pictures are focused and color is crisp. This is our second Nikon Coolpix and we recommend it to others needing a camera in this class.

Heading to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands. Picture taking mecca. This camera is almost too small for effective use of buttons, and so light weight, impossible to hold steady. I am very petite, and even for my fingers, cumbersome. Also, having the manual only on a disc is rediculous...... have a question? Turn on your computer, download the info, and start reading. Not practicle for an expedition.

I bought this camera to replace my old Sony. The Nikon shoots great pictures and it's very easy to use. I love how slim it is. Overall a great value for the price.
