But, there are some nasty disappointments that sometimes make it unusable in some situations - and for no good reason.
1. The half press causes the camera to focus nicely, then with the full press the camera changes the focus and produces an out-of-focus picture; over and over again! Can you deal with frustration?
2. The subject is adequately lighted, the live view is good, but the background is black cloth. Result: the subject is blown and the background is gray. Yes, exposure comp should help, but why can't the camera record what the live view is showing me?
Net result: when the camera gets it right it's great. But, just because the live view, or the view with a half-press looks good is no real indication that the camera will get it right. BEWARE.
3. Portrait scene mode seems to work well with flash, but without flash can lead to frustration (what does it think it should focus on? it finds the faces and then goes out of focus in the saved image!)

i gave this camera to a friend cause his old coolpix had seen better days. the features on this S6100 are too many to list without this turning into a novel, but....if you're looking for a really neat package that does just about everything , this is it. 16mp.!!! 28-196 zoom. vibration reduction, 3" LCD that's really clear, video, ISO-3200 pretty good in low light, in camera editing and macro down to 1.2" then this is it.

I purchased this camera and I have to say it is by far the best camera I have ever had. The quality of each picture is amazing, no matter what I am shooting. I can take a perfect picture of my daughter (3yrs) running around and it soesn't come out blury at all. I can take pictures when a room is dark and you cant even tell. It has all the features I was looking for like the color option, and panoramic assist. I use this product constantly now and the only thing was upset about is not getting one sooner. We were looking for a decent point and shoot to complememnt our dSLR, mainly for those instances where the dSLR is too big or a hassle to carry around. The S6100 is small enough for a pocket (its not a mini-compact though), yet still takes good photos by, well... pointing and shooting! Clearly the images are not as bright or crisp as a dSLR, but for social stuff and cool little options, the camera is ideal. The issue of the touch screen raised in other reviews is somewhat warranted. Obviously the sensitivity of the screen is nothing like an iPhone or iPad, but other than the areas in the extreme corners, everything works fine with the finger, otherwise the stylus works on the rest anyway. Face recognition and tracking functions are quite good, zoom is very good for the price. No software necessary for photo download but you get the Nikon NX2 software free with the camera to edit and store your photos anyway.
