Passport? Check. Ten-language phrase book? Check. Nikon S9100 camera? Double-check. Nikon's Coolpix S9100 Digital Camera (Black) was born to travel--with you. A 12.2MP CMOS sensor and a sharp 18x Nikkor 25-450mm (equivalent in 35mm format) in a tiny (2.5x4.2x1.4"/6.2x10.4x3.4cm) and featherweight (7.6 oz/214g) body = the ultimate compact travel camera.
The CMOS sensor gives you much improved low-light performance and reduced noise, and the 25-450mm lens can handle any situation you encounter, from ultra wide-angle landscape to portraits to unapproachable wildlife. 5-way hybrid VR image stabilization keeps your photos rock solid, without any shaking or blurring, even using the longest telephoto settings, or in low-light, slow shutter speed situations. The high resolution 921K-dot 3" monitor is crisp and clear, for composing and reviewing your images. Dazzling full 1080p HD video with stereo sound will bring your memories back in pristine condition (you can even take a still photo while shooting video). And the S9100 knows how to turn even dicey lighting situations into great images, with modes like Night Landscape, Night Portrait, and Backlighting HDR.
19 Scene modes provide optimal settings for common photographic subjects. In-camera processing offers you lots of creative choices without using image-processing software: filter effects like Nostalgic Sepia, High-Contrast Monochrome, Selective Color, High Key, Low Key, and Soft Effect; the ability to crop and re-size photos in-camera; D-lighting for improving high-contrast scenes; and skin softening for improved portraits. The EXPEED C2 processor delivers improved image quality and processing speed. Nikon's Smart Portrait System has a panoply of functions that make your portraits more flattering. So, wherever you go with the S9100, there you are--ready to bring back great images, no matter what the conditions.

On the day that I bought this camera I thought it was so hard to find out which camera was the best option for me! But, thanks to the employees which were really helpful, I got this camera!
I started "playing" with my new camera at the store.. and I was really happy.. The zoom, the quality... everything was just the way I wanted!

I'm a DSLR user and wanted something for light days. Since this is a CMOS camera I figured I'd give it a try but unfortunately it did not live up to my expectations. It just was not sharp enough for me and without any manual controls it was limiting. This is only because of my expectations and you can see I marked I would recommend it to a friend who was only interested in a decent P&S. I returned it and will try again with the "P" series (manual controls).

Comments about Nikon Coolpix S9100 Digital Camera (Black):
Bought to replace an old olympus. Wanted long zoom and panaramic feature. Used on a trip to Florida and was very pleased with beach, sunrise, foliage shots. All of these were done using the auto feature.
The panarama feature was easy to use, but have not printed any shots yet. On the computer they look good.
People are a different matter. Most shots are great, but some seem fuzzy - have not determined if that is me or the camera yet. There are so many features that it will take a while to learn them.

Bought this camera for my wife. Met all expectations. Particularly liked the zoom and how compact it was.
But having trouble with the flash. Get message that "Raise flash". When I raise flash and hit flash button. Get same message. Cannot adjust flash. Have contacted Nikcon tech with little satisfaction. They simply recommend what is in the tech manual. Am in process of sendng to authorized tech repair.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix S9100 Digital Camera (Black):
I'm not professional photographer but I am picky about how my pictures look. I have a good eye and I can be very aware about details in my photos. I've seen this camera get some bad reviews on B&H lately and I am really perplexed by this. I have had Canon cameras previously, from EOS to SD750.
I was at the beginning of my search for a great quality digital camera that was neither high-end DSLR but a premium Point and Shoot Camera with reasonable price. To me, some bad reviews on Nikon 9100 at Be&H was from people that come here, bashing good equipment when the vast majority of the time it is user error. Reviews that didn't specifically point towards any sort of systematic malfunction and that solely complained about image quality or other things are related to messed up using settings or/and wrong handling. The memory card can influence camera performance/speed (wonder how many negative reviewers trashed the Nikon for their lack, putting a low quality card in it ). I bought at B&H a SanDisk 8 GB Extreme SDHC Class 10 Memory Card for this reason.
This Nikon 9100 is a gem.
1. Picture Quality: Crystal clear and fast. I have no issues with blur. Make sure you choose the right shooting mode, pressing the shutter-release button halfway to focus be set and take good care of the camera keeping the lens clean. The VR Image Stabilization works fine.
2. Zoom: Incredible. Such a high zoom for the price point. Probably the best zoom you will find on a point & shoot. But to shoot with any zoom bigger than 200mm you will need a tripod or any standing object to put the camera under it to stop vibration and body motion – despite any anti-vibration and anti-motion feature, even with a DSLR.
3. Battery: Battery life is as expected. You will need to purchase at least 1 more EN-EL12 battery as backup to shoot a lot.
4. Charging: This camera charges with the battery inside with the Charging AC Adapter EH-69P. You charge the camera via USB into your computer or into a wall outlet. And we find a problem of design: to connect properly the supplied USB cable into the camera we have two bad options – put the front face with lens or back face with monitor over a surface with scratch risk. If you want to charge the battery separately you will need to purchase a separate wall mount Battery Charger MH-65. I feel the battery charger should have come with the camera but it is nice to be able to charge this camera via USB into your computer.
5. Compatibility: I have Intel i3 CPU with Windows 7 notebook and I have zero issues. You can use several softwares to play with pictures and videos (free or not).
6. Flash: The flash works great. It has plenty of power and turns any photos in a completely dark area into a crisp colorful bright photo. The location and the way the flash interact with the settings turn to an obligation to study how to handle the camera and how to use correctly the flash.
7. Size: The size is just about right. For a point & shoot, this is just about as big as you get before entering the DSLR. It is not pocket friendly but it is purse/bag friendly.
8. LCD Screen: Perfect size LCD screen to view. Consider investing into a plastic screen protector so it won't get scratched. Otherwise do what I did: I bought the Pearstone - Onyx 230 Camera Pouch, Weather-resistant 600 denier ballistic nylon, Velveteen lining and EPE foam padded interior.
9. Controls: As I previously previewed, the back of the Nikon is not as sleek or ergonomic as the Canon model(s), but nevertheless the design works fine for my hands (medium sized male hands). I am able to cleanly press all buttons and functions with no problem and I don't feel them to be cheap or to be faulty in any way.
10. Video: Great video, but stabilization will be an issue, especially at high zooms. But I knew this going in. Consider getting a tripod for serious video shooting or prepare to film at a low zoom. Wonderful zoom when you are filming is a must.
11. Effects/Modes: I do not use camera effects often but you can create a lot of artistic effects.
I'm very happy with my purchase with a great value.

I purchased my new Coolpix @9100 camera over the phone. The gentleman I spoke to was very helpful in terms of helping me reach a decision. He assured mt that the price I had seen on the internet for the camera and the accessories was correct. B&H's price was far better than any other I had checked. The camera arrived on time and in great condition. It's easy to use and I like it.

This camera is family-friendly... It serves the middle market perfectly, offering the convenience of a simple point & shoot, and the flexibility more experienced users seek. Overall, picture quality is very good at 12.1MP, and the 18x zoom is fun to have available. Overall, the auto/auto-scene settings probably get the most use, and both do a fine job, although sometimes anti-blur feature can be harder to use than it sounds online.

Bought the camera for a Christmas gift for my mother. She used to have a Canon A550 for 5 years and it always made great pictures but the battery lid broke recently so she needed a new camera. I decided on the Nikon S9100 which I regret now. I must have gone with Canon. Obviously Nikon doesn't care for the quality of their cameras unles they a DSLRs. The camera worked for some time and then started making pictures out of focus or very washed out when a flash is used. I sent it for repair to Nikon and they returned it confirmig it was repaired. It's been two weeks since then and it managed to ruin the pictures on two occasions - pictures made in a symphony hall came out terribly washed out and out of focus. Last night we went to a restaurant to celebrate my mom's birthday and the pictures came out awful again - washed out and out of focus. I just contacted Nikon again and am sending the camera back for repair/replacement. I just wish I could get my money back and buy good old Canon.

I was upgrading from a Nikon S6000 which had been a fine pocket camera except for the video quality. It had been several years the s6000 was wearing out. I am hard on pocket cameras. I am a pro photographer, but this was for me. The S9100 is bigger and heavier than the s6000 which I was not expecting. Then I used it in the field. It took all of one day to forget about it being slightly bigger and heavier. The metering capability blew me away immediately. The additional features were easy to learn and the video quality...W O W. It was just what I wanted and more. Instead of going into fancy terms of the professional capacities of this camera I would just like to keep this short and highly recommend it. I feel like I should have paid more for all it's features but am REALLY glad I didn't have too. Great Camera!!!

Comments about Nikon Coolpix S9100 Digital Camera (Black):
I bought this camera expecting great things--I have a Nikon D5000, which is great, and a Canon S95--also great. I wanted the extra zoom features of this Nikon, and I wanted something smaller than DSLR to take on trip to Mexico.
I used it once--at a party--and it zoomed alright--it just couldn't focus. Most of the shots I took were out of focus. When the camera did manage to focus--the pics were beautiful. But I'd say for 3 out of every 5 shots, the auto-focus and the shutter delay caused terrible blurring.
If you're just taking pictures of non-moving scenery--it's probably ok for that. People shots--not so much.
I returned it to B&H with no problems. B&H customer service is top-notch.
