Passport? Check. Ten-language phrase book? Check. Nikon S9100 camera? Double-check. Nikon's Coolpix S9100 Digital Camera (Silver) was born to travel--with you. A 12.2MP CMOS sensor and a sharp 18x Nikkor 25-450mm (equivalent in 35mm format) in a tiny (2.5x4.2x1.4"/6.2x10.4x3.4cm) and featherweight (7.6 oz/214g) body = the ultimate compact travel camera.
The CMOS sensor gives you much improved low-light performance and reduced noise, and the 25-450mm lens can handle any situation you encounter, from ultra wide-angle landscape to portraits to unapproachable wildlife. 5-way hybrid VR image stabilization keeps your photos rock solid, without any shaking or blurring, even using the longest telephoto settings, or in low-light, slow shutter speed situations. The high resolution 921K-dot 3" monitor is crisp and clear, for composing and reviewing your images. Dazzling full 1080p HD video with stereo sound will bring your memories back in pristine condition (you can even take a still photo while shooting video). And the S9100 knows how to turn even dicey lighting situations into great images, with modes like Night Landscape, Night Portrait, and Backlighting HDR.
19 Scene modes provide optimal settings for common photographic subjects. In-camera processing offers you lots of creative choices without using image-processing software: filter effects like Nostalgic Sepia, High-Contrast Monochrome, Selective Color, High Key, Low Key, and Soft Effect; the ability to crop and re-size photos in-camera; D-lighting for improving high-contrast scenes; and skin softening for improved portraits. The EXPEED C2 processor delivers improved image quality and processing speed. Nikon's Smart Portrait System has a panoply of functions that make your portraits more flattering. So, wherever you go with the S9100, there you are--ready to bring back great images, no matter what the conditions.

Best zoom, very fast saves, I still need to master the auto-focus - photos look soft, not crisp. I think it is related to settings.
I really hate the USB charger that Nikon has bundled with the camera. During the 3.5 hour battery recharge process, you cannot use the camera; unless you disrupt the charge process. Too bad while on the road for a long time.
USB/AV port is located at a very inconvenient spot (at the bottom of the camera). While recharging, you may scratch the LCD or damage the front portion unless you place it over a soft cloth.
Chose the S9100 over the P500 for the size factor.

At first I was really happy with the camera especially the special effects function and the 18 x optical zoom. I have been taking pictures for a while with it but find that the pictures are not as sharp and colorful as my previous camera. I have tried many different settings but unfortunately I don't get the result I want. For some people this camera might be just perfect, but not my favorite.

used for business to document equipment both indoor and outdoor. Camera is much better outdoors than in, flash tends to obliterate detail indoors. Easy settings. Sharp images. Great long zoom. One gripe, battery goes south real quick when it goes into "battery warning" state.

The S9100 has been very easy to use and understand - especially navigating the menu. The only problem I've had is that I get some blurry photos when I thought I was holding the camera still. I haven't read the manual completely ~ was rushing to get the camera before the arrival of twins, so hope that this is an issue that I can resolve. Otherwise, I love the camera!!

Tried to use for general photography, 30 years experience.
18 Zoom is worthless without a tripod
slow focus and blurry pictures in general snapshot use.

Our research included reading the good and bad reviews from various sources and visiting various retailers to hold different types of cameras. I know from reading the reviews and instructions to let the battery wear down all the way before recharging and I carry an extra charged battery. From this same research I am very careful when powering on or off to hold the camera still while the lens zooms in or out. And, I refrain from zooming out all the way to avoid camera shake. I am very happy with the camera and have taken great pictures as commented on by third parties. I take pictures of people and landscapes. The camera has more features than I will use. The video quality was also a nice surprise.

Camera was used to take photos and videos during a "once in a lifetime" family trip. It was a mistake. Unfortunately, conditions were problematic since indoor there was not enough light and outdoor the platform was unstable due to various reasons.
The product was extremely easy to operate and extremely light weight and trusted. However, the results were far below our expectations. We should have got practiced with the camera capabilities before the trip. At least with regard to still photos, where we could gain more from the product.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix S9100 Digital Camera (Silver):
The edges of the pics are soft. Probably because it's just too large a zoom lens. I'd go with the Olympus VR instead, which is a bit wider (24) but zooms to 300 rather than 400.

I used to have a large Nikon professional digital but wanted something that could fit in my pocket but punch the power. The Coolpix S9100 does exactly that with high pixel and a great zoom. The night portrait shows up as a bit too orange in the background but I am sure I can edit that out. The night landscape does exactly what I want it to do. Day time pictures are good and even better if you adjust it manually. I would recomment this camera and already my friends are jealous.
