The Coolpix P500 Digital Camera (Black) from Nikon is a super zoom camera, with a 36x Nikkor ED zoom lens that gives you camera angles from the ultra wide-angle 22.5mm all the way to a telescopic 810mm, suitable for shooting wildlife, sports or anything where you want to as close to the action as possible.
This remarkable zoom range is matched by the other features in the P500: 12.1MP CMOS sensor for greatly improved low-light performance and reduced noise, sensitivity up to 3200 ISO, a high-resolution (921K dots) 3" tilting LCD monitor, spectacular full 1920 x 1080 HD video with stereo sound (including slow-motion), and 5-way VR image stabilization for rock-solid images. Dual image processors make many of these functions possible.
The P500 thrives on challenges--the Easy Panorama mode automatically stitches together shots into breathtaking 180° or 360° panoramas, while Advanced Night Landscape and Advanced Night Portrait modes quickly take multiple shots and combine them into one dazzling picture, without using a tripod. Scene mode has 19 different scenes to choose from for ideal settings, or use the manual controls (aperture priority, shutter priority, or completely manual) for ultimate control.
The Smart Portrait System can make every picture of your friends and family a flattering masterpiece--Blink Warning tells you if someone blinked in a photo, red-eye is automatically corrected while shooting, Face Priority can focus on up to 12 faces and Skin Softening mode smoothes out wrinkles and imperfections in faces. And Macro mode lets you shoot as close as 0.4" from the lens.
When a single picture just isn't enough, the versatile COOLPIX P500 features a One-Touch record button that lets you shoot Full HD (1080p) movies at 30fps while recording audio with a built-in stereo microphone. It's great for sporting events because it will record high speed activity in slow motion, catching action missed by the human eye. The COOLPIX P500 also has an HDMI-CEC output for simple playback on your HDTV or computer-so now it's as easy to watch your own movies as it is to shoot them.
The COOLPIX P500 is ideal for shooting high speed action, so you're sure to capture the fastest skateboarders, skiers, and windsurfers. It's armed with ISO speeds up to 3200 and equipped with a five-way Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization System that reduces the streaky images associated with shaky cameras. The COOLPIX P500 even has a motion detector that identifies moving subjects and then adjusts the camera's settings to ensure that you won't miss a frame of the action.

I have been using Nikon cameras for over fifty years, since before anything automatic was common, and before digital was thought of. They still make solid products, well built as cameras, not just digital gadgets. This camera is made for taking pictures by people who know photography, but still can be used by novices. They can take pictures, but will never use most of its capability. Full manual control, combined with automatic control of shutter or apperture give you the ability to optimize high speed action or blur background or nearby objects. It has the ability to take a lot of almost identical pictures and keep the best one, take a series of various exposures and combine them to give you exposure lattitude to kill for!And it has an unbelievable number of digital goodies that I may never get around to exploring. But; The fantastic ability to take still pictures in low light is not available when you shoot video. It sometimes takes a lot of time to do it's digital magic, blacking out while you miss that good shot that happened immediately after the last one.And its image stabilization is nowhere as good as in my last Nikon, much less most camcorders today. And of course, with that unbelievable zoom range, a tripod is a necessity when you reach out a long way. And it reaches out a looooong way!It is still a Nikon, and well worth the name. It is by far the most camera for the money I have ever used. But I'll be a sucker for a new one in a couple of years.I have no commercial ties to anyone. This is my opinion and mine alone.Robert Ted Wrightrtwright[@]

This is the error I get whenever the camera turns on after the camera resumes from Auto Off.
By default the camera will turn off after 1 minute to extend the battery life. Whenever I pressed the shutter release or power button to turn my camera back on the error message "Cannot use this card" was displayed. The only way I found to get around this error was to remove the battery for a few seconds then turn the camera back on. I then had to set the Auto Off timer to 30 minutes. As long as I manually turn the camera off I have no problems. If the Auto Off feature turns the camera off I have to remove the battery.
I am using a SanDisk Extreme 8GB HD movie card that was recommended with the camera. I am a dedicated Nikon user but I cannot recommend this camera until this major issue is addressed.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix P500 Digital Camera (Black):
I bought this camera 'cause my wife and I will soon be vacationing in the mountains of the Big Bend in West Texas. But I've started using it already and, wow! It is simple to use and takes great and sharp pictures. Snapshots of family and friends are a snap and we have also taken nature photos. I'm still exploring features and have stuck mostly with the Auto setting, which works great. The one drawback so far has been image shakiness at full 36X zoom; hard to keep the camera steady at that setting. If you're taking a really long telephoto shot, you need a tripod for steadiness, but I think that's true of most cameras. This is a Nikon-refurbished camera and it looks and works like it's brand new.

A great "Bridge" camera for those who want more than a point and shoot, but don't want the hassle of lens changing with a DSLR.
The 36X optical zoom gives a tremendously large range of shooting options, and crystal clear pictures.
The angle ranges on the 3" LCD give you the ability to get the shot from any angle.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix P500 Digital Camera (Black):
I bought this camera for my wife who wanted more than just a point-and-shoot, but not a full SLR. She absolutely loves it. It is great for using as a point-and-shoot, with several built in scene modes that allow a novice to automatically adjust for difficult shooting conditions.
If you want more than a point-and-shoot, there are a lot of modes in which you can use this camera. Probably way more than you will ever use, but they are fun to play around with. You can spend hours going through the full manual, which only comes in electronic form.
The picture resolution is more than adequate for almost all needs. I took a picture of a box of cereal sitting on a table where the box filled less than a quarter of the frame. I was able to blow up the original picture to the point where I could easily read the small print on the side of the box. However, picture quality is not so good in low light conditions.
The display screen is very nice with good resolution, though it can get washed out when you are in bright sun. However, it does have a viewfinder you can use if you can't see the screen.
The battery life is a little on the short side. The camera also only comes with an in-camera battery charger, and it can take up to 4 hours to charge. You can't use the camera while the battery is charging. I recommend buying a spare battery, and an external battery charger (MH-61) which charges the battery in half the time.
The zoom range is quite impressive, and the image stabilization is decent. Of course with extreme zoom you are best using a tripod. Unfortunately, there is no way to attach filters to the lens. So if you like to add a 1A filter to protect the lens, you're out of luck.
Overall, I highly recommend this camera. It is easy to use for novices, but allows a ton of adjustments for more experienced users.

I just got the camera a few weeks ago. I am still learning all it has to offer. So far I have had no problems. I had read other reviews on the P500 and some had problems with the SD card, my suggestion is to buy a new one and not use one you may have already had in a different camera.
