The Macro Arm Light (MAL-1) from Olympus is a portable lighting system that allows you to accurately add accents to close-up photographs taken with a PEN Micro Four Thirds camera. The Macro Arm Light snaps into the camera's Accessory Port and has two 6.7" (17cm) flexible LED lights that are independently adjustable, to shed light where you want it.

Decent brightness for macro. Lightweight, but feels sturdy. Could have had a little bit longer arms, perhaps. Unlike VF-2, it locks to the hot shoe.

I bought this device for taking outdoor and indoor macro photos. Works as promised and works well with my macro lens. The adjustable arms allows for trial and error to create highlights or eliminate shadows. The 3 power settings are useful in fine tuning the shots. I would have liked the arms to be an inch longer though to be able to get more side light when using my 45mm lens with a 10x zoom filter.

This is the most sensible and usable macro accessory I have ever purchased, and I have purchased dozens of macro and close-up devices over the years. It is straight forward, takes no instructions to use, and puts the light right where you need it for perfectly lighted macro shots.

Simple, straightforward operation. Slides into place easily. Arms bend as you would expect, although they sometimes need tweaking to stay in place. Separate power levels are nice, with fine adjustments left to positioning. Light is hard -- ideal for forensic photography, but a bit harsh for living things. Definitely worth the retail price.

Anybody attempting to make a macro photograph knows that lighting is critical: lots of light enables smaller apertures and a good depth of focus. Also, changing side-lighting without having to move large lamps makes good modelling easier to achieve. MAl-1 does all this very conveniently.
