A monopod is an ideal way to take the weight off a heavy camera / lens combo or simply steady your hand. Still photographers are able to shoot at lower shutter speeds with the camera supported and videographers can avoid eye-straining jitter, especially evident during long zooming. Best yet monopods pack easily and go anywhere, and often do double-duty as a walking stick on long hikes.

This Manfrotto MMC3-01 Compact Monopod has 5 sections with easy-to-use flip levers which telescope to 4.7' and fold down to only 15.3". Made of aluminum, it weighs a little over 1/2 pound and yet supports loads up to 3.3 lb. The MMC3-01 Compact Monopod comes with a wrist strap to safely secure your valuable equipment. A wide selection of optional ball or pan heads is available.

Maximum Height 57.2" (145.5 cm)
Minimum Height 15.35" (39 cm)
Folded Length 15.35" (39 cm)
Load Capacity 3.31 lb (1.5 kg)
Leg Sections 5
Leg Lock Type Flip lever
Male Thread Size 1/4"-20
Weight 0.64 lb (0.29 kg)

I knew from the specs sheets that this was a small monopod. Opening the box, though, it's striking just how small and light it is. I've been using it as part of a two camera, compact interview setup and it's done great. Being so small and light, carrying it and a tripod is still quite manageable. Despite being so small and light, it still feels like a good quality product. It is of course not as stable and rugged as a beefier monopod, but this is for a different purpose.
Being 5 sections has pros and cons. On the plus side, it keeps it very small when collapsed. On the con side, it takes longer to flip four locks than three or two. And you will need to flip all four to get it to eye level. It feels nice and solid until the very last segment, where it starts to get a bit wobbly with much weight on it.
One minor issue I have is the "wrist strap." I like it and dislike it for different reasons. It's very useful to have and keeps the end cap from being lost, but it flops around a lot and tends to loosen itself with much movement. It's also a little thick to really use comfortably as a wrist strap.
Overall though a very nice product. Not for everyone, but if you need something small and light, this might be just the thing.

I bought this monopod because it was one of the lightest and smallest I could find. Although the construction did not look sturdy on first inspection, the clamps seem to hold reasonable downward pressure. Note that the handle is oval in cross section, not round. A screwed on camera may not point in the same direction your hand wants to hold it. I would recommend this for point and shoot cameras only due to it's size.

It's clamps are shaped such that all four can be opened/closed simultaneously when collapsed so with proper technique it deploys fast.

A decent tripod if you require small size, weight and price.

          I actually returned this item.
when fully extended felt a bit flimsy and not really secured for my Canon T2i with 300mm lens.
I do realize that I should be using a tripod and not monopod with larger lenses but still, was hoping for something that would allow me to take those unexpected picutes when opportunity presents itself and you just don't have the time for a tripod.

Comments about Manfrotto MMC3-01 Compact Monopod (Black):

Having a heavy-duty monopod that sees little action, this little guy is fabulous and is getting plenty of use. Even if you're not sure you'll need it, take it anyway since it's so compact. It makes a great walking stick, and you can pop the camera on it in seconds if need be (don't leave your camera on it if using it as a staff lest your camera get jarred too much). Every serious photographer needs a monopod in their gear bag, and this is the one to have.

Im not using this in the manner a monopod would typically be used. Im using this as a 'boom' to attach a GoPro HD camera to the end for filming action closer, as well as POV. Has worked great with weight of camera at the end while fully extended. Have used submerged in water & arms continue to operate with moisture inside.
