You're looking for a tough camera? We'd like to introduce you to one who fits the bill: The Pentax Optio WG-1 Digital Camera. Not only does this snazzy little point and shoot take great 14Mp photos and 720/30p video, but it's built to last. How so? Consider the following: The WG-1 is waterproof to 33', shockproof - able to withstand drops of up to 5', crushproof - able to withstand weight of up to 100 kilogram-force, coldproof to negative 14°F, and dustproof. Impressed? We are. Drop it, kick it, take it out in the harsh elements or under the sea, all in the name of capturing moment, and the WG-1 will live to do it all again.
When it comes to the more basic aspects of the camera you'll benefit from a 2.7" LCD display, 5x optical zoom, and Digital Shake Reduction. The camera also features an SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slot. You can store your videos or still images to the compatible card of your choosing. The WG-1 also has an HDMI connection for direct viewing of your HD video on your HDTV. Additionally, the camera also boasts a Digital Microscope mode for macro shooting. The WG-1 is definitely more than the average point and shoot.

My family of five (three kids and my wife with me) take a lot of trips that always involve pools, the beach, river sports, and lakes. This camera is perfect for that. I picked up the following extras: a second battery, a small case made by Mountainsmith, the waterproof remote, a 32 gb card, a floating wrist strap and a small cardreader usb gadget. I literally carry the thing everywhere. I fit the floater wrist strap into the case and it makes a nest that the camera fits into. The battery has wonderful battery life although I'm religious about recharging one or the second anytime I am down. Movies, underwater movies, photographs, and underwater photos are superb. I've taken it deep (15-20 feet) and taken perfect photos and movies of the kids swimming around. The micro photographs allow me to actually see individual threads on fabrics at an inch or so and in a pinch it would double as a digital microscope. Nature photographs are fantastic. The controls and internal software make complete sense to me.
The attached caribeaner has two o-rings on it and just to protect the glass back screen, I did add about four extr o-rings so that when it folds against the camera it doesn't have a chance to scratch it.
I do occasionally leave it in video mode and try to take a pic after turning it bakc on and find it taking a movie.
I do love this and unlike my wife's Canon Rebel SLR which does better in low light and obviously takes slightly better photos, it is so portable I never even notice it in my pocket or bathing suit.
I did a lot of research on underwater point and shoot cameras and waited forever for this one to come out and I'm so glad I have it now.

Bought this camera because of its up to 33ft waterproof feature, well it suffered a hiccup. At less than 12" underwater, water got in it. We lost all of our family pictures. However the pictures we got to see from the LCD screen before the mishap were great.

Comments about Pentax Optio WG-1 Digital Camera (Purple):
Really easy to use, few buttons but lots of functions at your fingertips.
I love the fact that it is waterproof and shockproof, ideal for outings with the family and I do not have to worry if my children want to borrow my camera.
I am still having difficulties to completely understand the software; I hope it does not take much longer for me to fully manage it.

Comments about Pentax Optio WG-1 Digital Camera (Purple):
I bought this for use in Hawaii (surf shots, scrambling lava fields, underwater, backpacking, beach shots). I have yet to do underwater, but I have liked its ruggedness so far. I've had other point-and-shoot cameras get sand lodged in the moving parts and this camera seems like it will avoid that. I think I bought it right at the end of its marketing - I see WG-2 is available now. The specs for WG-2 are very similar, but its advertising improvements in some areas.
I've done shots on a windy beach where I was being pelted with windblown sand and surf and did not have problems w the camera. Haven't dropped it while hiking in lava fields, but bound to happen eventually. Like the solid carbiner clip - makes it handy to keep the camera available.
Handheld pics are decent; nice color. The WG-1 could be better at low light. The menu has a ton of options, some I may not end up using (editing pics on the camera). Movies taken a different settings have looked & sounded good. Some lens flare present in movie mode, but similarly composed still shots don't have the flare. Some lag present at shutter press. Decent battery, but I am at half charge after about 150 pics including 15 min or so of movie time. Some pixelation at high zooms. Many shooting modes to select from.

Comments about Pentax Optio WG-1 Digital Camera (Purple):
I bought this one for my daughter as a gift who tends to be a bit accident prone (thus I wanted something that wouldn't break when dropped or splashed).
It takes incredible pictures - and has a variety of very nice modes to select from via the menu. The face-detection seems to work well for focusing on people.
Camera feels rugged overall with the exception of the door-hinge for the battery/memory card which feels a bit flimsy. Time will tell whether or not this will cause any issues.

I cant give it an "adventure" rating yet but if there are any issues after I dunk this little guy Ill be sure to comment. So far the camera has taken some really great pictures and has a great macro feature that allows for really nice intracate detail close up. The different functions are easy to access.
I wish that the lock that secures the weatehr proof features was a bit harder to unlock. I worry that in certain situations that this switch could be bumped and thus good bye internals... but this is just an anxiety at this point. Also, maybe its just me, but periodically my finger covers the corner of the flash creating a color distrotion in close up photos.

Seems to take better pictures than its predecessor. Detailing refinements, all for the better. I use it on-board while sailing, and for everyday use. It gets a lot of challenges

took it to the ocean for it's first real test. took me a little getting used to the focus method. i was trying to capture the kids interaction with the waves, realized i need to lock in the kids ahead of time and let the focus lock follow them around then capture the shot when i wanted it. was not great for trying to capture an instantaneous shot. still love the results. no real examples of video yet. had a little fogging up problem on the last day, but i think that was due to opening up the battery compartment outside. will be monitoring this issue.

This is my everyday companion, I use it at work as a documentation tool. I personally have one as well that I take everywhere I go. I have owned 4 versions of the Pentax Optio Water Guys with the first I purchased in 2005 still working great and is carried everyday by my husband. He has taken it to Kuwait, Afghanastan, and Iraq. I have taken them into the waters off of Hawaii, Thailand, Caymans, Jamaica, & Mexico. My maintenance staff use them as well and we are hooked.

Used the camera at the beach and underwater in the pool. It takes nice pictures and seems very durable. I only have two minor complaints that keep me from giving the camera a 5. First, the camera setup is not intuitive. Second, the default setting for the camera uses file compression.

I use this camera tubing, swimming, and outdoor adventures. I have a digital Pentax SLR, but I wanted a compact waterproof camera to keep in my purse for unexecpted pictures, and this camera is an exellent camera. It takes great photograhs in and out of the water, and is completely waterproof. It is easy to use. Everything about this camera is excellent.

Easy to use. I was worried about being able to see the LCD screen out of doors because of previous reviews. That is only a problem if you have a bright sun shining directly over your shoulder onto the screen. But it is still visible - unlike some other cameras I've had in the past. Nice little point and shoot.

I purchased this camera for my wife as a gift; she truly loves it! She takes it to the water park and loves taking pictures of our boys under water. Took it on vacation and, was frequently asked where it was purchased. Would recommend this camera; it's awesome….

I bought the camera as a easier-to-use carry to Disneyworld camera. We haven't taken that trip yet, but from using around home, it does a nice job. Good clarity. Handles a variety of lighting situations. Rugged and compact. I like the caribiner strap for convenience.
I haven't tried any under water photos yet so I can't speak of that. I did get frustrated with the set up menu at first. I thought the settings had been completed but the set up screen would come up every time I turned it on, preventing me from taking a photo until I answered several questions. Overall not a great menu.
The battery and SD card door can open easily so be careful about that. Otherwise, I'm pleased with the camera.
