The Onkyo TX-NR509 Network Receiver is a network-ready home theater centerpiece that is capable of decoding advanced Dolby and DTS audio formats for immersive audio, while it is also capable of integrating seamlessly into your home network.
The networking ability of the TX-NR509 takes you one step closer to fully integrated home entertainment. Audio files on your computer and streaming internet radio can both now be played through your main system, with fidelity far beyond what you're used to on a PC.
When you're setting up this receiver, Audyssey 2EQ works to adapt the soundstage to the unique dimensions of your room. Fine-tuned adjustments to audio and video settings are easy, thanks to the user-friendly overlaid on-screen display (OSD) of the system.
By downloading Onkyo's Remote App, you can even use your iPod or iPhone as a remote control for the system. The receiver's four HDMI 1.4a inputs handle stunning HD audio from Dolby and DTS, as well as dynamic 3D video. Onkyo has also included several DSP audio modes of their own, along with four audio gaming modes tailored to the type of game you're playing.
The unit also has a front-panel USB port that offers a digital link for your iPod, iPhone and USB storage devices, and Zone 2 line-outs allow you to send a stereo audio signal to a second room equipped with an amp and speakers. The TX-NR509 offers an array of features at an affordable value for home theater enthusiasts.

In general I am satisfied with the product and what it does for its price. There are a few issues which the buyer must be aware of: 1. Internet error recovery is poor. As a result one needs to disconnect the receiver from the outlet to get back to a known state. A power off sequence will not help. 2. I can not find a configuration option to prevent the receiver from power up the HDMI connected TV. Most of the day I just listen to internet radio and therefore do not wand the TV to be powered up. Navigating the menus is not the most intuitive thing either and managing the internet radio favored list is a nightmare.

The first 509 I received had a noisy power amp and was exchanged . The second unit turned out to be very glitchy . The usb input would freeze and it was impossible to clear it without turning receiver off and repowering. Many calls to Onkyo tech support and updating of firmware did not solve problems. Second glitch was when turning volume at the receiver every now and then it would mute and then pop in louder .I don't trust trying another one.

I found myself using the net source a lot. It's great to listen to e.g. Pandora with no need to turn on and control another box. Onkyo even provides its own streaming service.
Needless to say sound quality of Pandora may be not what you put 5.1 system together for. You will be looking to stream your own files then, and here you find that Onkyo has integrated some really cheap technology. Half of my collection won't play because of national characters used in tags and file names. I'm yet to find a DLNA server to provide convenient navigation through my large collection (though I found one barely acceptable) I actually gave up on streaming my own files for time being. I wish there was a Squeezebox inside of this Onkyo instead.

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR509 Network Receiver:
Headline got your attention, didn't it? Well, the mistake was made by me, once I got the 509 I realized that the zone-2 capability was only utilized through a pre-amp/receiver! I was unable to accommodate another unit, so I sent it back and bought the Onkyo TR-NX609!! Perfect for what I needed, zone-2 for deck speakers without the need for a pre-amp! Has too many bells-and-whistles to mention here, but all nice to have! Haven't found any flaws with this unit! The only thing I would add here is DO YOUR RESEARCH, make sure you find out the details of your particular use before buying and it will save you the aggrevation of what I went through!

Using this receiver to run my basement home-theater setup with Paradigm 5.1 setup. So far, the system is a great match, but I'm still early-on with it. Wondering if I can run component video (Wii) out of my HDMI output since that is the only cable I ran in the walls to my Epson projector.
Need to learn more about the functions and remote and report back then.

I really like this receiver, am replacing an oldie but
goodie ONKYO TX-SV70PRO, still works fine but the new
technology(HDMI)and more sophisticated software made me to step up a notch, new HDTV and BD as an example.
Has come to stay for a while, excellent addition!!!

Bought this unit to replace an older Onkyo A/V receiver that had gone bad. This receiver really gives a lot of bang for the buck. Decided to get a new one rather than repair & the new unit sounds Awesome & has lots more features. [...] Got it up & running now on my TV/VCR/DVD surround system & it sounds great!!

Comments about Onkyo TX-NR509 Network Receiver:
I am currently using this unit as a 2.1 stereo receiver. I have yet to add speakers for surround sound so I can't comment on that, but as a stereo it is very good. The integrated Internet radio (Pandora etc) is fantastic and sounds great. Setup is simple. The remote is good and works for all my other various components. One thing that isn't great is the iPod interface. You have to use the remote and the tv monitor to navigate the mp3 player, and the interface is ugly and clunky. The free iPhone Onkyo app is ok, but also somewhat clunky.

We use this product to combine our cable, BR player and to be able to play either through out the house. The system seems to be able to handle the through put with ease, and hasnt overheated yet. It also has an USB in so that you can quickly connect and external music source. There doesnt seem to be anything that is bad about the system that we have seen so far other than running a little hot, but its still new so we shall see.
